Rightio Loose Units, Kununurra on a Good 4 with the rail true, sunny and chill, is basically the racetrack equivalent of chips being perfectly salted. You lot know what that means, it means the speed map matters, the straight lines matter, and the bullshit excuses get thrown straight in the bin by the first decent run.

Today's got that vibe where a couple of "obvious" favourites can do a magician's trick, vanish early, then the value runners come rolling in like they missed out on the invite to the start. I've built a spine with three horses that I can see winning, then I'm sprinkling in a roughie each way because watching a longshot get within a whisker is the closest thing we degenerates get to joy without losing money.

Punty's take:

Race-by-race, I'm seeing a common theme, sprint maps with real advantage. If you're backmarker in these fields, you're basically asking the race to fall apart for you, and Kununurra rarely hands that kind of romance to everyone. Look for horses that can either lead, stalk, or at least get an honest pocket run, because on Good 4 rail true, the straight run home is where jobs get done.

Now, the fun part is Race 4 to Race 7. This is where the card starts stacking those "place-getter who can win if the tempo turns" types. The big three spine is all about that, Buades and Envenomate are the kind of horses that keep drawing backers, and The Final Word is that low-drama, go-forward type that doesn't need luck to be in the finish.

What it means for you:

Aggressive where you can, protective where you must. In the sprints, I want to be with the leaders and the stalkers. When we hit the longer one, we still back class with position, but we're more forgiving of off-speed runners that can swoop.

This is a speed race pretending to be a handicap. Black Coal and Predicting are both trying to make the race about them, and the rest of the field have to "catch up" on a rail true Good 4. Buades is sitting right there in the right orbit, and I like that he's not priced like a cult hero, he's priced like a horse that should be involved. City Of Sin is the kind of backmarker that can get the right run into a place, but win-wise, he's got to wait for something to go wrong.

Working Class Girl looks like she can improve with the first time blinkers off the back of a quiet prep, and Throw At Da Stumps is your "if things go pear-shaped, he's a boomerang" type.

Tellez sits in that "place-getter by stealth" lane. Verbosity is the roughie type because his bigger quote gives you a chance if the race breaks weird.

On these Good 4 rail true sprints, the winners often come from a narrow pocket of pace, so the rest are racing for minor money. That means place lines are where the value tends to hide.

2 - Slow tempo races punish dead-last patience
Race 3 and Race 4 both slow right down, so you want someone who can get a position without cooking early. If you're too far back, you're basically watching from the next postcode.

3 - The market isn't sleeping, it's studying you
In the card's shorter races, the firming moves are pretty loud, especially around the on-pacers. If a horse is shortening and maps clean, you don't need to overthink it, you just need it to hold position.
