Punty's take: Heavy 9 at Riccarton is the great equaliser, but it still has rules, and the biggest rule is this, speed is currency, but you need it in the right form. The on-pace horses with clean trips get to run the race, the wide or out of position ones have to do extra work just to stay in the fight. Expect that classic Heavy 9 pattern, first half looks okay, then the track grabs everyone, and the only people running on are the ones already in it.

The other thing I'm watching is the jockey intent and where horses are likely to sit when the pace quickens. If the leaders look like they'll be genuine, that's when you target the "stalk and pounce" types. If the speed turns into a slow crawl, you're looking for the horses that can still power through the line without needing perfect clear galloping room. Either way, the track is punishing, so we're backing horses that can handle pressure, not just the ones that look pretty on paper.
