Rightio Ticket Munchers, Naracoorte on a Good 4 with a 45% chance of a shower and a northwesterly at 13km/h, so it's a seven race card that doesn't have much in the way of an early lane to read. The speed is spread across the card, the fields are mostly maidens and benchmarks with no stars, and the trick today is knowing which horses are getting backed for a reason and which are just getting backed because the crowd likes the name. Grab a coffee, this one's a grind.

MEET SNAPSHOT

Track: Naracoorte, 1100m to 2000m card
Rail: True, with no rail position or bias note in the data
Official going: Good 4 (45% chance of rain, 0-1mm)
Weather: Possible shower, 19°C, humidity 56%, wind 13km/h NW, live gusts 16.7km/h
Early lane guess: unknown pre-race, watch the first two
Tempo profile: Moderate pace in Races 1 and 5, slow in Race 2, genuine pace in Races 3, 4, 6 and 7. Most of the front-running shape is in the 1400m and 2000m races, and the sprints are where the speed gets spread out.
Jockeys to follow:
Campbell Rawiller: 7 rides, the most on the card, including the Thermodynamic ride in Race 7 and the Streetcar Fury backup at the front of the Race 5 market.
Tala Hutchinson: 6 rides, and Never Pegasus in Race 2 is the one that matters most, with the market still shortening on the Jaensch horse.
Jacob Opperman: 5 rides, with Artpark in Race 3 our top pick and Scenic Host in Race 4 sitting in the back half of a genuine pace.
Stables to respect:
S & J Jaensch (4 runners): Never Pegasus in Race 2 is their headline runner, and Gusty Way in Race 5 is the other one in the mix.
P A Preusker (4 runners): Annie's Croft in Race 1 is the heavy plunge on the card, and Artpark in Race 3 gives them a second live horse.
Ms N Irwin (3 runners): Thermodynamic in Race 7 is the stable's best chance, and the Each Way on it is the biggest single bet on the card.

Punty's take: Right, the speed. Race 3 has Squagaga as the only horse mapping to lead, and it's drawn wide at barrier 15, so it has to work to get across. That is the kind of set up where the back half gets a free run at the finish, which is why Artpark, Magic Princess and Rob The Bank all look dangerous in different ways. Race 7 is the same story with Thermodynamic on its own out in front from barrier 3. Race 2 is the one to watch for the slow pace. Never Pegasus wants to sit handy, but from barrier 9 it has to work to cross, and the pace isn't going to hand it an easy run. Race 1 and Race 5 are the moderate pace races, and that's where the market has been doing the most heavy backing. Annie's Croft has been driven in from $3.30 to $2.26 and Streetcar Fury has gone from $1.95 to $1.58. That is money coming, but money coming isn't the same as a sure thing, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise. Race 6 is a wide open looking race with a leader in Frose and a lot of runners trying to find a spot, and I like Ambello's chances more than the price suggests. Race 4 has a lot of runners that want the back, so the shape should help the closers if the early speed is as weak as I think.

What it means for you: Start by understanding that the races with the most shape to read are where the money should go. Race 5 is the bankers' race on paper, with Streetcar Fury as short as $1.58 and nothing else in the market worth going near for the win. Race 1 is the one to be careful with, because Annie's Croft has no starts on the board yet and that's a bet on the market and the stable, not a form line. Keep your bigger stakes for the win bets that are priced sensibly and your Each Way on Thermodynamic in Race 7, which is the one where the shape and the price line up best for me. The quaddie is wide in the middle legs, so if you're playing it, play it knowing the flexi is what you'll be living on and the pay out depends on a longshot in one of the open races.

PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI

These are the three bets the day leans on.

1 - Never Pegasus (Race 2, No.4) — $1.83
Why Sectionals fastest on L600, L400 and time, and two thirds from four starts on good ground. The shape is against it in a slow race from barrier 9, so this is a bet on the form and the sectional speed winning out over the pace.

2 - Streetcar Fury (Race 5, No.3) — $1.58
Why Two wins and a second from its nine career starts, and first-up it has three wins or placings from three with 2 wins. The short price is the price, and the shape from barrier 1 is against it, but the form is strong enough that I'm happy to have it as one of the three legs.

3 - Annie's Croft (Race 1, No.11) — $2.26
Why No starts on the board yet, so this one is a bet on the market and the stable. The money has come in heavily from $3.30 and the jockey and trainer numbers at this track are strong enough to back it at the price.

Multi (all three to win): $10 × 6.53 = $65.30

Race 1 – Grarock Plumbing Mdn Plate

Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace on paper, with nobody mapping to lead outright. Balsino Prince, Arizona Wildfire and Calm The Press are the ones most likely to find the front, and Calm The Press has to work from barrier 9. That leaves Sorcha as the one to watch from the back, and the shape suits the back half, so the closers have a real chance if the pace stays soft. Annie's Croft is the bet and it doesn't need the shape to be perfect.
Punty read: Annie's Croft is the bet here, and it's the one I'm most comfortable with on the card at the price. It has no starts on the board yet, so you're backing the market move from $3.30 into $2.26 and the stable's form at this track. Balsino Prince is the one I'd want to see from the front, and Sorcha is the danger if the race sets up for the closers. Seminyak Sunrise is the one from the back that could get a run if the market is wrong about the favourite.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Annie's Croft (No.11) — $3.70 / $1.65
Bet $15.00 Win, return $55.50
Prob 27.5% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.02x ▼42% since tip
Why No starts yet, so the case is the money and the stable. Melissa Julius has a strong strike rate with this trainer at this track, and the market has been hammering it in from $3.30 to $2.26.

2. Balsino Prince (No.2) — $7.40 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.6% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.23x ▲14% since tip
Why A real chance — but at $2.25 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.

3. Sorcha (No.10) — $8.40 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.16x ▲7% since tip
Why Its two closing runs at Coleraine and Donald were both sixths and it's been run wide and slow started in the past. The shape suits the back half in this race, so it's the danger if the pace stays moderate.

Roughie: Seminyak Sunrise (No.9) — $15.00 / $3.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.9% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 0.89x ▼13% since tip
Why No map position on the data and no form line, so it's a pure market bet. If the favourite has an off day and the closers get their chance, a roughie from barrier 7 with Margaret Collett riding could run into the money.

Race 2 – Sportsbet Get On Extra Mdn Plate

Race type: Maiden, 1430m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, and Never Pegasus is the one that matters. It sits handy from barrier 9 and has to work to cross, which means it's running into a shape that works against it. Shujinko is midfield from barrier 4 and it'll get a clean run if the pace stays slow, while Babylon Blue is the back half runner that the shape favours most. Hasta La Oinkers is the one to watch from the midfield after 143 days off.
Punty read: Never Pegasus is the bet, and it has the form and the sectionals to back it up. The race shape is against it, but the sectional speed says it can still win if the pace doesn't collapse. Shujinko is the one that could sneak in if the favourite gets stuck wide, with the market backing it from $3.50 into $2.68. Babylon Blue is the one from the back that gets the shape in its favour, but the market has drifted it from $15.00 out to $26.00, and that's the crowd telling me it doesn't like it.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

1. Never Pegasus (No.4) — $1.55 / $1.08
Bet $13.00 Win, return $20.15
Prob 51.0% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.79x ▲13% since tip
Why Fastest on all three sectional measures, and two thirds from four starts on good ground. It's three days since its last start, a 3rd at Murray Bridge GH 1400m, so it's fit and it's going the right way.

2. Shujinko (No.5) — $3.50 / $1.45
Bet Tracked
Prob 26.9% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.94x ▼34% since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.45 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.

3. Hasta La Oinkers (No.2) — $15.00 / $2.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.0% | Place: 35.4% | Value: 0.90x Steady since tip
Why Only 2:0-0-0 first-up and it's been off for 143 days. The market has firmed from $18.00 to $15.00 and the shape is against it from midfield, so I'd only use it as a backup.

Roughie: Paycheck (No.9) — $10.00 / $2.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.2% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.42x ▲50% since tip
Why Off for 302 days and only 1:0-0-0 first-up, so the case is the trainer's hot run. The market has drifted from $10.00 to $15.00, which tells you the punters aren't convinced either.

Race 3 – Western AG Hcp (54)

Race type: Restricted 54, 1430m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Squagaga the only horse mapping to lead, and it's drawn wide at barrier 15. Magic Princess and Lysander both sit handy and will be the ones trying to take the race away from it. Artpark is midfield from barrier 9, which puts it in the shape that's against it, but it's got the most experience on the card. Archdeacon is the back half runner the shape favours most.
Punty read: Artpark is the bet here. It's the most experienced horse in the race with 31 starts and five wins, and the market has it at $3.35 with heavy support. The shape is against it, but a genuine pace should bring the midfielders into play as the leader tires. Magic Princess is the danger from the front, and Rob The Bank is the one that gets the trip if the pace is honest. State Of Maine is the outsider with a backed price, and Archdeacon is the back half runner with the shape in its favour.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

1. Artpark (No.1) — $3.50 / $1.62
Bet $13.00 Win, return $45.50
Prob 25.5% | Place: 63.0% | Value: 0.89x ▼11% since tip
Why Five wins from 31, and three wins from 20 on good ground. Jacob Opperman and Ms N Irwin's trainer hot run both add to the case, and the market has it heavily backed from $9.50 into $7.40 out to $3.35. The shape is against it, but the form is good enough to overcome it.

2. Magic Princess (No.4) — $7.00 / $2.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.04x ▲7% since tip
Why A real chance — but at $2.50 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.

3. Rob The Bank (No.3) — $10.00 / $3.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.8% | Place: 33.5% | Value: 1.18x ▼15% since tip
Why Its last start was an 11th at Penola 1600m, slow started, and the run before that was a 4th at Strathalbyn 1200m, held up and slow started. Campbell Rawiller rides it and the place price doesn't cover the risk.

Roughie: State Of Maine (No.11) — $12.00 / $3.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.2% | Place: 27.8% | Value: 0.74x Steady since tip
Why Its middle distance record is 27 starts with four wins and 4 thirds, so it's better at this trip than most in the field. It's midfield from barrier 12 and the shape is against it, so it needs the leader to crack and it's the one most likely to be running down the outside.

Race 4 – Donna's Electrical (Bm56)

Race type: Benchmark 56, 2000m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, with Prickly Poppy the only leader from barrier 8 and it's drawn wide. Classy Claret from barrier 9 is the other forward runner that has to work to cross. Hasta La Silver and Scenic Host both get the shape in their favour as back half runners, and Exalted Fire is midfield from barrier 4 with the shape against it. This is a race where the closers should have their day.
Punty read: Exalted Fire is the bet, and it's got the most experience on the card at this trip with 82 starts, 11 wins and 12 seconds. The shape is against it, but it has a huge sectional record, and the held up runs last start are the reason it's been getting beaten rather than the horse being slow. Hasta La Silver and Scenic Host both suit the shape, and Classy Claret is the one from the front that will need to work hard from the wide barrier.

Top 3 + Roughie ($9.50 pool)

1. Exalted Fire (No.1) — $3.80 / $1.65
Bet $9.50 Win, return $36.10
Prob 18.5% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.70x ▲16% since tip
Why Eleven wins from 82 starts, and five wins from 42 on good ground. The last three runs were all held up in the running, so the excuses are real. The six kilo rise is a question, but Alyssa Webb and Michael Hickmott are a strong combination.

2. Hasta La Silver (No.3) — $7.50 / $2.55
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.36x ▼27% since tip
Why A real chance — but at $2.55 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.

3. Scenic Host (No.4) — $7.40 / $2.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.4% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.07x ▲14% since tip
Why Its good track record is two wins from 28, and it's been a long way out at the back. The shape suits it, but it was 13th last start at Warrnambool and the place price doesn't pay enough to justify the risk.

Roughie: Classy Claret (No.2) — $11.00 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.9% | Place: 27.8% | Value: 0.76x ▲9% since tip
Why It's two wins from three at this distance and has the sectional speed, with the fastest time on the sheet. It's drawn wide and has to work to cross, but if Prickly Poppy gets run down it's the one that can take advantage.

Race 5 – Naracoorte Refrigeration (Bm66)

Race type: Benchmark 66, 1100m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, and nobody maps to lead outright. O'tycoon from barrier 10 and Murph from barrier 8 are both drawn wide and have to work to cross. Streetcar Fury from barrier 1 is handy and the shape is against it, but it has the best early speed on the card and the market doesn't seem to care. Artissi is the back half runner that gets the shape in its favour.
Punty read: Streetcar Fury is the bet, and it's short at $1.58. It has two wins and a second from its last three runs at this trip, and first-up it's 2:1-0-0 from three starts. Murph is the danger from barrier 8 if the pace is moderate, and the market has backed it from $7.50 into $4.20. Gusty Way is the one from the middle, and Naralinga is the roughie that could run into the money if the favourite is held up.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.50 pool)

1. Streetcar Fury (No.3) — $1.95 / $1.17
Bet $10.50 Win, return $20.48
Prob 50.9% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.99x ▼22% since tip
Why Three wins from nine starts, and first-up it has three starts with two wins and a second. Nose roll on for the first time is the one gear change, and Jordyn Weatherley rides. The shape is against it from barrier 1, but the price has been backed in from $1.95 to $1.58, and it's still the best horse on the card.

2. Murph (No.6) — $7.00 / $2.40
Bet $5.00 Place, return $12.00
Prob 20.5% | Place: 61.5% | Value: 1.43x ▼44% since tip
Why It's 126 days off and has no wins from four first-up starts, which is the honest bit of this one. Its last start was a 5th at Morphettville Parks 1250m, and Kayla Crowther rides it.

3. Gusty Way (No.5) — $13.00 / $3.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.9% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.77x ▲8% since tip
Why It was a first-up winner at Penola 1075m last start, and its track record is six wins from 38 starts. Campbell Rawiller rides and it's a 3kg rise, which is a fine weight for a horse that has been running well.

Roughie: Naralinga (No.2) — $8.00 / $2.55
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.3% | Place: 28.5% | Value: 0.43x ▲62% since tip
Why It won at Naracoorte 1100m on 2026-08-28, and its track record is four wins from 28 starts. The market has drifted from $7.50 to $13.50, so there's a chance the crowd has gone off it for a reason the data doesn't show.

Race 6 – Kerkhof Concrete Hcp (54)

Race type: Restricted 54, 1100m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Frose the only horse mapping to lead from barrier 5. Spike Almighty, Zuetoro, Ambello and Showtime Kistena are all ON-PACE and have to work to cross from the wide barriers. Gopher Frank is midfield from barrier 11, and Ambello is handy from barrier 12 with the shape against it. This is a race where the leader might not get clear, so the sit behind the leader matters.
Punty read: Ambello is the bet, and it has the form to be a leader in this race but is wide at barrier 12. The market has it at $4.70 and the form backs it up with a second at Avoca 1200m last start and a second at Coleraine 1000m. Boltonova is the danger, drawn at barrier 6 with the fastest time on the sheet and the market backing it from $5.00 out to $7.00. Gopher Frank is the closer that could run into it late, and the tongue tie off for the first time is a gear change worth watching.

Top 3 + Roughie ($5.50 pool)

1. Ambello (No.3) — $4.20 / $1.80
Bet $5.50 Win, return $23.10
Prob 19.9% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.84x ▲5% since tip
Why It's been placed in its last two runs, a second at Avoca 1200m and a second at Coleraine 1000m. It's wide but Melissa Julius and Nell Carter are a solid pairing, and the market has it in a good spot at $4.70.

2. Boltonova (No.9) — $5.00 / $2.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.7% | Place: 34.8% | Value: 0.54x ▲30% since tip
Why A real chance — but at $2.00 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.

3. Gopher Frank (No.5) — $8.20 / $2.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.2% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.84x Steady since tip
Why Tongue tie off for the first time and J-HOT at 19% over the last 100 rides, so Jacob Opperman is riding well. It's midfield from barrier 11, and the last start was a 6th at Mt Gambier 900m, held up.

Roughie: Spike Almighty (No.1) — $9.00 / $2.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.1% | Place: 34.6% | Value: 0.99x ▲6% since tip
Why Its last start was a 5th at Mt Gambier 900m, slow started, and it's ON-PACE from barrier 9. Campbell Rawiller rides and the class 1 start on the record was a win, so if the leader gets run down it has a path.

Race 7 – Gordon Refrigeration (Bm66)

Race type: Benchmark 66, 1430m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Thermodynamic the only leader from barrier 3, and the shape is against it. Whathappensinvegas and Forever Waiting both get the back half shape in their favour, and Extinguish from barrier 8 is handy and has to work to cross. Piwhane is the backmarker that the race will be built around if the leader gets run down.
Punty read: Thermodynamic is the bet, and it's the only horse mapping to lead on the card at a 1430m trip. It has five wins from 43 starts, and its last start was a 3rd at Penola 1400m with the win-to-place record giving the place its value. The shape is against it, but it's got the most early speed and a strong record at the trip. Extinguish is the danger from the front and the market has it heavily backed from $4.60 to $3.45. Piwhane is the one that could run into the money from the back, and it's a 1st-up winner last start at Penola 1400m.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

1. Thermodynamic (No.3) — $4.20 / $1.80
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P), collects $39.00 if it wins ($27.30 win + $11.70 place), $11.70 if it only places
Prob 23.1% | Place: 54.2% | Value: 0.97x ▼10% since tip
Why Five wins and nine seconds from 43 starts, and two wins from ten at this distance. Campbell Rawiller rides and Ms N Irwin trains. The shape is against it from the lead, but the form and the place value are what make it the Each Way bet.

2. Extinguish (No.5) — $4.80 / $1.95
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.3% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.83x ▼31% since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.

3. Piwhane (No.10) — $9.50 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.9% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 1.13x ▼11% since tip
Why Six wins from 23 at the distance, and its last start was a win at Penola 1400m. Harry Grace rides and the market has backed it from $11.00 into $9.00, so it's worth noting even without a bet.

Roughie: Causeweluvadelaide (No.12) — $10.00 / $2.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.1% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 1.11x ▲5% since tip
Why Its last start was a 2nd at Penola 1400m, the same meeting as Piwhane, and its T-HOT trainer rate is 13% over the last 100 runners. It's ON-PACE from barrier 9 and has to work to cross, so it's a roughie that needs the front runner to fade.

SEQUENCE LANES

QUADDIE (R4-R7)

Smart: 1,4,3,2 / 3,6,7 / 3,5,9,1 / 3,5,10,12 (192 combos x $0.33854 = $65.00) -- 33.9% flexi
Punty's take: Race 5 is the anchor with Streetcar Fury and Murph, so that leg is tight. Races 4, 6 and 7 are the open legs, with four runners in each. The flexi is 39.1%, above the 30% minimum, and the ticket is a wide one with real risk, so it's an entertainment play with a bit of hope. A quaddie needs a $5 to $10 winner somewhere to pay well, and the best chance is one of the longer priced runners in Race 6 or Race 4 getting through.

NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK

1 - First-up doesn't favour the favourite in Race 5
Murph has no wins from four first-up starts and is 126 days off, while Streetcar Fury is 161 days off but has a first-up record of 2:1-0-0 from three starts. The two of them are in the same quaddie leg and the difference is the one thing worth watching.

2 - Tongue tie off for Gopher Frank
The tongue tie comes off for the first time, and the horse has the J-HOT strike rate at 19% over the last 100 rides with Jacob Opperman. It's a small change that could matter in a race where the closers have a say.

3 - Naracoorte form for the roughie
Naralinga won the Naracoorte 1100m on 2026-08-28, and it's a $13.50 roughie in a race where the market has drifted it out from $7.50. Sometimes the crowd forgets the track the horse already knows, and that's the kind of thing a mate at the bar will point out before the race.

FINAL WORD FROM THE RATBAG REPORT

Naracoorte is a card for the patient, not the panicked. Pick your spots, respect the Race 5 short price, and don't chase a bad run into the quaddie. See you at the track, you grubby lot.
