Rightio Ticket Munchers, Riverton is a heavy 10 with a grey sky, a 50km/h wind gusting through and a rain risk sitting at 45%+ by 04:30, so this is a day for the horses that can get through mud and not for the ones that only look good on a screen. Eight races, 93 runners, and the form book is doing its best impression of a wet paper bag.

MEET SNAPSHOT

Track: Riverton, 1200m to 2147m card
Rail: True
Official going: Heavy 10
Weather: Overcast, gusts 50km/h, rain risk 45%+ chance at 04:30
Early lane guess: Unknown pre-race, watch the first two
Tempo profile: Slow pace in Races 1, 4 and 5, Genuine in Race 3, Moderate in Races 2, 6, 7 and 8. Lots of runners wanting the same bit of grass in the two-turn sprints, and the staying races look like they will be run at a walk until the turn.
Jockeys to follow:
Kendra Bakker: Eight rides today, including Bakers Dozen in Race 7 (our staked pick) and Vamos in Race 4, which is a big ask for a horse taking on a field that has more form than sense.
Yogesh Atchamah: Seven rides, including Par Tee in Race 4 and Marcus Attillus in Race 8, the roughie I'd chase if the first few get cooked.
Brett Murray: Six rides, including Hour Glas in Race 1 and Auricula in Race 2, so he's got a fair spread of the card and a horse at the head of the betting in Race 2.
Stables to respect:
Kelvin Tyler (14 runners): Fourteen runners is a whole army. Three of them are in Race 4 alone (Vamos, Flash Roca, Sight To See), and Flying Julz in Race 2 is the one I'd be watching from that yard.
M E Forde (8 runners): Megalomaniac in Race 7 and Ferdie's Secret in Race 8 are the names here, and both are the sort of horses that make a stable look like it knows what it's doing.
Kelly Shearing (5 runners): Bakers Dozen in Race 7 at $2.97 is the one that matters, with Maria Pilar and Turn The Tide also running for the yard in Race 6.

Punty's take: Heavy 10 at Riverton is the great leveller and the speed map says this card is a bit of a mess in the middle. Race 1 and Race 4 have no outright leader on the map, so the front will be decided in the first 200m and whoever gets the sit will feel pretty clever. Race 3 is the only genuine pace race, with Rheinhardt uncontested on the map from barrier 9, which makes it the most readable race of the lot. Race 7 is the banker race if the market is to be believed, Bakers Dozen is short for a reason and the line on him is about as clear as mud can be. Race 8 is the chaos race, with a dozen horses who all think they're going to lead and only one with a proper heavy record stacked up to win it.

What it means for you: Be aggressive on the single-horse win bets where I've got real conviction: Big Tuki in Race 1, Ensign Jack in Race 3, Taramea Lad in Race 4 and Bakers Dozen in Race 7. Protect your bank in Race 5, where Maximus Augustus is the shortest price on the card and the place bet on Spring Queen is the smarter way to get some action. Keep the roughies small and treat them as entertainment, because a heavy track has a habit of making a $10 horse look like a genius for about 40 seconds.

Race 1 – Doug Horrell Contracting / Blair Racz Fencing Mdn

Race type: Maiden, 1600m
Map & tempo: Slow pace on paper, and nobody on the map is a sure leader. Mr Lova Lova (barrier 3) and Tick Tick Boom (barrier 6) are the likeliest to find the front, and Tick Tick Boom has the better tempo record to sit on top of it. Big Tuki draws barrier 7 and settles midfield, so he needs the pace to stay honest and a bit of room to get through. Hour Glas from barrier 9 is the one coming from the back and he's going to need the race to fall apart.
Punty read: Big Tuki is the horse I've got money on, and it's a Win bet for a reason. He's the best of the midfield types, he's run 3rd at Gore on heavy last start (0.4L), and the market has him at $4.48 for good reason. Donovan Cooper is at 11.1% at the track. The danger is Tick Tick Boom, who has the sit on the front and a 2nd at Ascot Park (1.3L) last start. Borntobesure is the one who ran 2nd at Gore over 2000m in a heavy race and can come out of nowhere if the pace stays slow.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.50 pool)

1. Big Tuki (No.6) — $4.48 / place tote
Bet $13.50 Win, return $60.48
Prob 21.1% | Place: 46.2% | Value: 0.95x
Why Ran 3rd at Gore on heavy last start, only 0.4L off the winner, and the trainer R C Dennis is in the mix. He's 2kg up on his last start, but the jockey's track record is good enough to keep the price honest.
2. Tick Tick Boom (No.5) — $5.95 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.02x
Why A real chance — but at that price the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Borntobesure (No.1) — $9.00 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.3% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 1.20x
Why Ran 2nd at Gore over 2000m on H9 last start (1.2L), and that's the best run of his career. He's midfield, so the question is whether he can find a run with the pace the way it is.

Roughie: Hour Glas (No.10) — $17.00 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.6% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.80x
Why Backmarker from barrier 9, so the path is slow pace and a dash through the middle of the field. He was 6th at Gore on heavy last start after being raced wide, so the wide run is the excuse, and if he gets a run he could be the one in the finish.

Race 2 – Howley Joinery / Macaulay Motors Maiden NZB Mega Maiden Series Mdn

Race type: Maiden, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with Loose Knickers (barrier 5), Auricula (barrier 1) and Thukela (barrier 3) all in the mix for the front. Flying Julz from barrier 9 is the one coming from the outside and has to work hard to get across. Wise Dancer and Fault Line are the back half and need the pace to be honest. Auricula is the one who can get a nice sit and then make the others come to him.
Punty read: Flying Julz is the horse I'm putting money on. He's midfield from barrier 9, which is the awkward gate, but he's the most promising horse on the sectionals with a time rank of fastest and a 4th at Gore on heavy last start (5.4L). The market has him at $3.42. Auricula is the biggest danger, sitting handy from barrier 1 and with a 3rd at Ascot Park last start. Wise Dancer is the one to watch from the wide gate.

Top 3 + Roughie ($20.00 pool)

1. Flying Julz (No.5) — $5.50 / place tote
Bet $15.00 Win, return $82.50
Prob 28.5% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.57x
Why Fastest sectional time on the card and a sound heavy record (3 starts, 1 third). He's 4kg up on his last start, so he needs to be a bit better, but the way he's been running he looks ready to go.
2. Auricula (No.4) — $10.00 / place tote
Bet $5.00 Place, pays the tote place dividend
Prob 26.8% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 2.68x
Why Sits handy from barrier 1 and ran 3rd at Ascot Park over 1400m last start (1.2L). He's only got one start in the book at this sort of level, so the question is whether he can handle a bit of pressure.
3. Wise Dancer (No.9) — $5.68 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.4% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.05x
Why Ran 2nd at Phar Lap Raceway over 1200m (0.3L) last start, so he's had a bit of a rest and can back up. Track record is good for the jockey Triston Moodley, but the barrier is a worry.

Roughie: Loose Knickers (No.1) — $32.26 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 2.6% | Place: 16.8% | Value: 0.83x
Why Two 2nd placings and two 3rd placings on the heavy from 10 starts is the sort of track record that makes him a live roughie. He's on the speed from barrier 5 and if the first few come back to him, he could be the one stealing it.

Race 3 – Truckie Laurie / J T Farms Mdn

Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Rheinhardt the only leader on the map, uncontested from barrier 9. Ensign Jack (barrier 1) is the one who gets the sit behind and the question is whether he can take the lead when Rheinhardt gets a bit of a rush on. Torchem from barrier 5 and Swift Thinker from barrier 7 are the two who can run on if the front pair come back to them. This is a race where the sit beats the lead on heavy ground.
Punty read: Ensign Jack is the horse I've got the Win bet on. He's the standout on the speed map, he's got the fastest sectional on the card and he's been unlucky last start at Ascot Park (interference). The market has him at $3.44 and I'm happy to take that. Swift Thinker is the danger with a 3rd at Ascot Park last start (2.7L), and Torchem is the one I'm placing because he's a backmarker who can finish strong on the outside.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Ensign Jack (No.2) — $8.50 / place tote
Bet $12.00 Win, return $102.00
Prob 35.3% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 3.00x
Why Fastest sectional on the card and a 2nd at Gore on heavy (1.3L), and he was held up at Ascot Park last start with interference the excuse. Sits handy from barrier 1, which is the perfect gate.
2. Swift Thinker (No.8) — $3.45 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 24.0% | Place: 58.1% | Value: 0.83x
Why A real chance — but at that price the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Torchem (No.4) — $9.00 / place tote
Bet $3.00 Place, pays the tote place dividend
Prob 12.2% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 1.10x
Why Ran 2nd at Riverton over 1100m last start on the prior run and was 6th at Ascot Park with interference. He's a backmarker from barrier 5 who wants a genuine pace to run on, so the Place bet is the right way to get him.

Roughie: Manorbier (No.1) — $10.42 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.0% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 1.15x
Why Has run 2nd and 3rd on heavy in his career, and a midfield run from barrier 3 means he can sit in the one place and pick up a bit of ground if the leaders come back to the field.

Race 4 – Sparrow Logging / Aparima Electrical Hcp

Race type: Open, 2147m
Map & tempo: Slow pace with Smooth Operator (barrier 1) and Vamos (barrier 6) the likeliest to lead. Vamos is drawn wide and has to work to cross, and that's the one thing that could make this race look different. Taramea Lad from barrier 5 settles back, and he's the one who gets the cover if the front pair go too slow. This suits the one coming from back, so long as the leaders don't set the race alight.
Punty read: Taramea Lad is the Win bet. He's the top of the speed map on the back, he's got 7 wins from 31 on heavy and he's got the best sectional on the card. The market has him at $3.79 and that's a bargain for a horse this well-credentialed. Vamos is the danger, sitting handy from barrier 6 and running 1st at Gore last start (1.3L). Flash Roca is the one with the stamina and has a 2nd at Gore on heavy last start.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Taramea Lad (No.6) — $7.00 / place tote
Bet $15.00 Win, return $105.00
Prob 32.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 2.25x
Why Seven wins from 31 on heavy and a 3rd at Gore over 2000m last start (2.2L), so the staying trip is in his favour. He's the fastest sectional, and that counts on a day where the pace is slow.
2. Vamos (No.2) — $5.50 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 22.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.25x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Flash Roca (No.3) — $4.35 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.2% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.92x
Why Ran 2nd at Gore over 2000m last start (1.3L) and has five wins from 18 on heavy. Midfield from barrier 2, so he's got a nice spot if the front is honest.

Roughie: Smooth Operator (No.1) — $10.00 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.5% | Place: 17.8% | Value: 0.65x
Why Four wins from 15 on heavy and he's sitting handy from barrier 1, so the inside gate lets him save ground. Two slow starts at Phar Lap Raceway are the excuse for the poor runs, so if he jumps, he's got a real chance.

Race 5 – Phil Bevin Spraying / Riverton Plumbing (Bm65)

Race type: Benchmark 65, 2147m
Map & tempo: Slow pace with Maximus Augustus (barrier 6) and Sparky (barrier 5) the likeliest to lead. Maximus Augustus settles handy and he's the one who gets the sit if Sparky goes too hard. Wild Jakkal and Nigel are drawn wide in the back half and need cover or luck to get into it. The shape is in favour of the ones who can sit handy and come round the field.
Punty read: Maximus Augustus is the Win bet, the shortest price on the card at $2.70 and I'm not going to pretend he's a value bet. He's got a fastest sectional and a strong 1st-up record (1 win from 7). The market is right about him, but I'm only backing him to win, not to be the banker. Spring Queen is the Place bet with a fine jockey combo and a 1st-up record of 0 wins from 4 starts. Secret Wish sits midfield and is the danger if the pace collapses.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Maximus Augustus (No.3) — $6.00 / place tote
Bet $5.00 Win, return $30.00
Prob 33.0% | Place: 59.4% | Value: 1.98x
Why Fastest sectional on the card and a 1-win 1st-up record from 7 starts. He was held up last start at Ascot Park (6th) and bumped at Wingatui before that, so the form has been unlucky.
2. Spring Queen (No.9) — $13.00 / place tote
Bet $10.00 Place, pays the tote place dividend
Prob 13.6% | Place: 43.1% | Value: 1.77x
Why Sits midfield from barrier 3 and has been 0 wins from 9 on heavy, but she's been placed in her career and that's what the Place bet is for. She's coming off a 51-day break, so the place is the sensible way to back her.
3. Secret Wish (No.4) — $6.25 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.9% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.81x
Why Won at Gore over 2000m last start (2L) on heavy, which is a strong run. Midfield from barrier 4 and will get a run if the front pair don't go too hard.

Roughie: Wild Jakkal (No.6) — $10.31 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.6% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.99x
Why Drawn wide at barrier 8 and midfield, so he's got to come from the back. Ran 2nd at Wingatui over 2200m last start (4.3L) on heavy, and if the race falls apart he could pounce.

Race 6 – Grant Horrell Contracting / Milnes Transport (Bm65)

Race type: Benchmark 65, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with Maria Pilar (barrier 4) and The Red Rhino (barrier 11) the two to lead. The lead is contested, so the early speed could come back to the field. Forward runners drawn wide, Highland Fling (barrier 14), So Brassy (barrier 13), My Girl Alice (barrier 18) and Turn The Tide (barrier 16) all have to work to cross. What About Peace from barrier 10 settles midfield and can get the trail if the leaders hit the wall.
Punty read: What About Peace is the Win bet at $6.17. He's midfield from barrier 10, which is a fair gate for a heavy 1200m, and his best sectional is the fastest on the card. He ran 4th at Ascot Park over 1200m last start (2.3L), so he's in form. Turn The Tide is the danger, ran 7th at Ascot Park last start (4.7L), but drawn wide at barrier 16 so he's got a big ask. Highland Fling is the one to watch from the wide gate.

Top 3 + Roughie ($8.50 pool)

1. What About Peace (No.12) — $7.50 / place tote
Bet $3.50 Win, return $26.25
Prob 17.1% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 1.28x
Why Fastest sectional on the card and 4th at Ascot Park last start (2.3L). He's midfield from barrier 10 and has a 1-win record from 2 starts on track, so the course suits him.
2. Turn The Tide (No.10) — $16.00 / place tote
Bet $5.00 Place, pays the tote place dividend
Prob 13.7% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 2.19x
Why Sits handy and had sectional time rank 2. His 5 starts on heavy have produced a win and two seconds, so the heavy form stacks up, but the barrier 16 gate is a real worry.
3. Highland Fling (No.1) — $34.00 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.2% | Place: 26.0% | Value: 3.81x
Why Sits handy from barrier 14 and was 8th at Ascot Park last start after interference. His 15 heavy starts have produced one win and one second, so he's solid enough without being a standout.

Roughie: De Russian Rocket (No.15) — $26.00 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.3% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 2.16x
Why Backmarker from barrier 9 with 21 heavy starts and two wins. He's been 91 days off, so the first-up record of 0 wins from 4 is the concern, but if the race stays moderate and he gets the run, he's a genuine roughie.

Race 7 – Ricki Egerton Dagging / Riverside Rentals (Bm75)

Race type: Benchmark 75, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with six on the speed on the map and no clear leader. The front will be contested and that could mean the race is run at a fast clip early. Monaghan Boy (barrier 11) is the wide one, with Hanalei Star (barrier 10) and Small Town Belle (barrier 9) needing cover from the back. Bakers Dozen from barrier 1 sits handy and can get the sit in the trail if the early leaders go too hard.
Punty read: Bakers Dozen is the Win bet, and I'm not hiding that he's the banker of the day. Three wins from three at Riverton, eight starts on heavy with three wins, and the fastest sectional on the card. The market has him at $2.97 and I'd rather take that than chase something bigger. Claudius Maximuss is the danger, sitting handy from barrier 6 with a 4th at Ascot Park last start (2L). A Mandarin is the one who's got the heavy form to upset the apple cart.

Top 3 + Roughie ($20.00 pool)

1. Bakers Dozen (No.6) — $3.80 / place tote
Bet $15.00 Win, return $57.00
Prob 28.6% | Place: 61.5% | Value: 1.09x
Why Three wins from three at Riverton, plus three wins from eight on heavy and the fastest sectional on the card. He was 4th at Ascot Park last start (1.2L) and sits handy from barrier 1, so the gate and the form both line up.
2. Claudius Maximuss (No.4) — $7.00 / place tote
Bet $5.00 Place, pays the tote place dividend
Prob 17.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.25x
Why Three wins from 16 on heavy and two seconds at 1400m, so the trip is right. Ran 4th at Ascot Park over 1600m last start (2L) and is one of the speed horses to watch.
3. A Mandarin (No.2) — $8.50 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.2% | Place: 36.1% | Value: 1.29x
Why Four wins from nine on heavy, which is elite on this surface. He's 133 days off and 0 wins from 5 first-up, so the first-up concern is the question mark, but the heavy record is hard to ignore.

Roughie: Endean Affair (No.9) — $20.00 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.1% | Place: 27.8% | Value: 1.42x
Why Ran 4th at Ascot Park over 2215m last start on heavy (2.1L) and has a 1-win record at this distance. He's on the speed from barrier 8, so if the favourites get tangled, he could find a bit of room.

Race 8 – Wrens / Nind Electrical (Bm65)

Race type: Benchmark 65, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with four on the map for the front: The Hares Ears (barrier 12), Ferdie's Secret (barrier 6), Shooting Stride (barrier 1) and Must Bee (barrier 2). The Hares Ears is drawn wide and has to work to get across, but he sits handy and can get a nice rhythm if the inside speed is taken up early. Gentle Ben and Albazinga are the back-half runners and need the early pace to fold up.
Punty read: The Hares Ears is the Win bet, drawn wide but with a 2nd at Gore over 1335m last start (1.3L) on heavy and fastest sectional on the card. Terry Moseley is in the saddle, and the market has him at $5.38 which is fair enough. Gentle Ben is the danger, backmarker from barrier 16 who has 16 heavy starts and two wins, and a 2nd at Riverton over 1600m is the sort of form you can't ignore. Albazinga has a 1-win record at the track and is the one to watch from barrier 3.

Top 3 + Roughie ($17.00 pool)

1. The Hares Ears (No.5) — $7.50 / place tote
Bet $12.00 Win, return $90.00
Prob 19.5% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.46x
Why Second at Gore over 1335m last start on heavy (1.3L), fastest sectional on the card and three seconds from five on heavy. He's drawn wide, but the sit should take care of the rest.
2. Gentle Ben (No.2) — $10.00 / place tote
Bet $5.00 Place, pays the tote place dividend
Prob 13.2% | Place: 34.8% | Value: 1.32x
Why Four wins from 43 with 16 heavy starts and two wins. He was 8th at Ascot Park last start (5.1L) and backmarker from the outside, so he needs the race to set up for him.
3. Albazinga (No.12) — $14.00 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.8% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 1.37x
Why Has a 1-win record at the track from seven starts and is a backmarker from barrier 3 who can finish. He was 7th at Ascot Park last start (5.5L), so he's the one to watch if the pace is genuine.

Roughie: Marcus Attillus (No.3) — $10.64 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.7% | Place: 24.2% | Value: 0.71x
Why Backmarker from barrier 15 with a 1-win record at Ascot Park and a 1-win track record. He was held up last start at Ascot Park (5th), so if he's got a run and the early pace stays honest, he's a roughie with a path.

NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK

1 - Bakers Dozen's track record is spotless
Three wins from three at Riverton and three wins from eight on heavy. The market has him at $2.97 and the form says he's earned it.

2 - Ensign Jack's excuse is the interference
Ensign Jack was 6th at Ascot Park last start after interference, and before that he ran 5th at Gore on heavy (5.8L). The sectionals say he's fastest on the card, so the excuse is real.

3 - Scoobidoobidoo is 195 days off at $166.67
The data has him as a write-your-own-ticket runner, and he's a first-up runner with a 1-start record. Keep your money in your pocket, or put a fiver on him and call it entertainment.

FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY

Riverton is a heavy 10 with the wind coming through and the rain on the way, so the form that counts is the form done in the mud. Back the ones that have earned it, keep your roughies small and I'll see you at the bar when the photo finish is called.
