Rightio Degenerates, Pioneer Park on a Good track with six races from 1100m to 1600m and 42 runners, and the card is built for a mate who likes a bit of chaos mixed with a bit of mugs' money. The first race is a bolter-free zone on paper, Mapleton Hill is the one everyone's been scared to back at $1.90, and I'll be honest, I'm not happy about it. Still, the early pace is moderate, the middle of the day is a moderate tempo bunch, and the quaddie gets messy from Race 4. Let's get into it.

MEET SNAPSHOT

Track: Pioneer Park, 1100m to 1600m card
Rail: True (no rail position given in the data)
Official going: Good (Rainfall: Nil)
Weather: Fine, live gusts 35.2km/h (no wind direction given)
Early lane guess: unknown pre-race, watch the first two
Tempo profile: Race 1 is a slow tempo with nobody mapping to lead. Races 2 to 5 are moderate, with Race 2 and Race 3 both having a few forward types fighting for the front. Race 6 is the only genuine pace on the card, with Grinzinger Lass the lone leader on the map.
Jockeys to follow:
Ianish Luximon: six rides, including Supreme Valkyrie in Race 1, Black Zous in Race 3 and Grinzinger Tundra in Race 5, so he's all over the card.
Jessica Booth: six rides, with Yule Point in Race 2 as the big one and Grinzinger Lass in Race 6 on the speed.
Lek Maloney: six rides, and he has Mapleton Hill, Dad Bod and Magarten, three of my heavier calls.
Stables to respect:
Ms K Petrick (16 runners): the biggest stable on the day by a mile, with Mapleton Hill, Black Zous, Dad Bod, Lean On Me and Magarten among the sixteen. Sixteen runners means somebody in there is going to be hard to beat.
Kym Healy (9 runners): Supreme Valkyrie, Limited Risk and Sweet Kick are all live, so this barn can get you a result in more than one race.
Greg Connor (5 runners): Startyourengine, Flying Yishu, Boy Big, Revolution Rising and Even Sharper are the five, and Boy Big's back-half style fits the moderate tempo in Race 3.

Punty's take: Race 1 is the slow one, and the only horse I've got on the speed map anywhere near the front is Startyourengine, who sits handy from barrier 5. That means Race 1 is a sit and wait affair, and Mapleton Hill is going to be given a lovely trip from the midfield, which is exactly what makes this $1.90 price so hard to swallow. The middle of the card is a different beast. Races 2 to 5 all have a moderate tempo, and the shape in each of those is helping the back half, so the ones who want to lead are going to get tested. Race 2 has four forward runners fighting for the front, which is a mess waiting to happen. Race 3 has Limited Risk and Tellez as the two leaders, and the back-half runners get the run of the race. Race 4 is the one I'd pay the most attention to because there are two leaders in Fussy As and Aggressive and the front half has plenty of ways to go wrong. Race 6 is the genuine pace race with Grinzinger Lass alone on the front, which is a gift to the closers if the wide ones can get across.

What it means for you: Don't go mad on Race 1. Mapleton Hill is the bet, but at $1.90 you're taking the short end, so keep it tidy and don't chase. Races 2 to 5 are where the value lives, and Race 3 with Black Zous is the one I'd be happiest standing behind if the front runners go too hard. Protect your bankroll on Race 4, it's the most open race on the day, and pick the spots. Race 6 comes with a genuine pace, Magarten is the bet, and the one to shake your fist at is the horse drawn wide who has to work to get across. This card rewards patience and punishes anyone who thinks a short price is a sure thing.

PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI

These are the three bets the day leans on.

1 - Mapleton Hill (Race 1, No.3) — $1.90
Why Sits midfield from barrier 1 in a race where the speed is slow, so the shape helps him. He's winless from 12 starts, but he's been close, with a second on good and a fourth at Pioneer Park over 1200m last start.
2 - Black Zous (Race 3, No.3) — $3.20
Why He's been running in the money on good tracks, with 7 wins from 42 starts on good and a third at Pioneer Park over 1100m last start. The moderate pace is against him from barrier 5, but Ianish Luximon has the ride and the back-half shape is what makes this a fight.
3 - Yule Point (Race 2, No.6) — $2.35
Why He's been pretty consistent for a horse with 2 wins from 8 starts on good, and the field has a few runners pushing for the front. The shape is against him, so this one needs the front to be tested, but he finished second over 1100m at Pioneer Park earlier this preparation.

Multi (all three to win): $10 × 14.29 = $142.90

Race 1 – Mulgas Adventures Mdn Plate

Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Slow pace on paper, and nobody maps to lead, so the likeliest to find the front is Startyourengine from barrier 5, who sits handy. Mapleton Hill is drawn in the middle and gets a sit in midfield with a good chance to strike late. The shape helps the midfield runners here, which is why this race is a waiting game and Mapleton Hill suits the trip.
Punty read: Mapleton Hill is the bet, $15.00 Win, and it's the only one I'm putting money on. Lek Maloney has been good on this track with a 12.5% strike rate on the day, and he and Ms K Petrick have combined well together. The danger is Supreme Valkyrie, who has the fastest sectionals in the field and is trained by Kym Healy, but has zero wins from nine on good. Startyourengine has the winkers off again, which is a gear change to watch, and the last start was a held up, slow start 5th at Pioneer Park. Upcoming Season is the roughie and he's been well backed, but he's eighth over 1200m last start, so he needs everything to fall into place.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Mapleton Hill (No.3) — $1.90 / $1.22
Bet $15.00 Win, return $28.50
Prob 43.6% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 0.83x Steady since tip
Why The best horse in the race on the numbers and the one who has the trip. Lek Maloney has the ride and he's been close at Pioneer Park. He's going to be the favourite and he should be hard to beat in a slow race, although you're getting a short price.
2. Supreme Valkyrie (No.5) — $3.10 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 27.6% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.86x Steady since tip
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Startyourengine (No.4) — $4.20 / $2.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.2% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.60x Steady since tip
Why He's the one most likely to lead, and the winkers are off again. Last start was held up with a slow start, so the early pace could help him if he can get clear.
Roughie: Upcoming Season (No.6) — $11.00 / $3.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.3% | Place: 22.3% | Value: 0.80x Steady since tip
Why He's been backed in from $14.00 to $11.00, and the path is a fast finish from the midfield if the race falls apart up front. He's a hard horse to trust off an 8th last start, but the market has noticed him.

Race 2 – Ladbrokes Big Bets Hcp (64)

Race type: Restricted 64, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, with nobody mapping as an outright leader, but Miss Top Gun from barrier 6, Princess Pancakes from barrier 3, Yule Point from barrier 4 and Even Sharper from barrier 2 all have a go. Miss Top Gun is drawn wide and has to work forward, which means the front is going to be contested. Verbosity and Hellivit are the ones the shape helps, sitting well back and in the midfield.
Punty read: Yule Point is the bet, $12.00 Win, and he's the horse I've got the most respect for in this race. He's won twice from eight on good and the last start was a 6th at 1200m, which is a bit disappointing, but he finished 2nd over 1100m before that. The shape is against him because he sits handy from barrier 4 in a moderate race that suits the back half, so he needs the front to be tested. Verbosity is the danger from the back and the rest of the field have form that matters, but Yule Point's record on the card is what I'm backing. Real Valentia is the roughie who gets the back-half shape, though his last start was a 3rd from 5, and he's fresh for this grade.

Top 3 + Roughie ($12.00 pool)

1. Yule Point (No.6) — $2.35 / place tote
Bet $12.00 Win, return $28.20
Prob 28.0% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.66x Steady since tip
Why He's the best horse on form and the market has him as the favourite. Jessica Booth knows him, and the stable has been good in this grade with a jockey strike rate that is decent. The shape works against him, but the field isn't short of pace, so there's a chance he gets the trip.
2. Miss Top Gun (No.4) — $4.00 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.7% | Place: 41.9% | Value: 0.75x Steady since tip
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Verbosity (No.1) — $5.50 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.5% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.74x Steady since tip
Why He's a back-half runner who has been close to the top at this track and the shape suits him perfectly. He's drawn wide at barrier 7 though, so he's got to find a run.
Roughie: Real Valentia (No.3) — $11.00 / $3.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.9% | Place: 24.1% | Value: 1.09x Steady since tip
Why He's a back-half horse who can get a run if the pace is steady, and he has the class of a horse who has won over this trip before. Sit back and hope for a gap.

Race 3 – Happy Birthday Cathy Starr Hcp

Race type: Open, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with Limited Risk from barrier 1 and Tellez from barrier 4 as the two leaders, so the lead is contested. Boy Big is drawn wide and the back half is the one that the shape helps, while Black Zous sits midfield from barrier 5, which means he has to get through the pack without getting boxed in.
Punty read: Black Zous is the bet, $12.00 Win, and he's the one I'd back to get the job done. He's been placed over 1100m last start, and his record on good is strong with seven wins from 42 starts. The shape is against him on a moderate pace, but he has the class and Ianish Luximon can ride him into the right spot. The danger is Tellez who is one of the two leaders and has Lek Maloney aboard, and I'd watch Boy Big who gets the back-half run of the race and has the sectionals to finish.

Top 3 + Roughie ($12.00 pool)

1. Black Zous (No.3) — $3.20 / $1.65
Bet $12.00 Win, return $38.40
Prob 28.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.90x Steady since tip
Why He's the horse with the best overall record in this field on good, and he's been close at 1100m last start. Ianish Luximon is a good rider and this is a fair grade for him.
2. Tellez (No.6) — $2.35 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 27.4% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.64x Steady since tip
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Flying Yishu (No.2) — $5.50 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.8% | Place: 29.3% | Value: 0.81x Steady since tip
Why He's had good form on good and the market hasn't pushed him out, but he was 5th last start after a wide run. He'll need a clean run.
Roughie: Limited Risk (No.5) — $9.00 / $3.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.6% | Place: 22.3% | Value: 0.77x Steady since tip
Why He's a leader who needs the moderate pace to stay at the front. If Tellez and he go hard, the back half will be the ones who benefit, but if he gets to lead a steady race he's the one to beat.

Race 4 – Hoskings Jewellers Hcp (58)

Race type: Restricted 58, 1100m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with Fussy As from barrier 3 and Aggressive from barrier 4 both fighting for the front. Sweet Kick is drawn wide from barrier 7 and has to work to cross, while Joseph's Glory is in the midfield from barrier 6 and needs the cover. Dad Bod has no map position, so we can't tell where he'll be settled, which makes him a different beast to read.
Punty read: Dad Bod is the bet, $11.50 Win, and he's the one I'm going with. He's won three from fourteen and has been placed at 1100m, and he's a first-up runner with a first-up record of 2 starts, 1 win and 1 second. The market has backed him from $4.00 to $2.90, and I can't see a reason in the card for that move, so I'd let the market do the talking. The danger is Fussy As who has the gear changes with the lugging bit on and the tongue tie off for the first time, and Fussy As is a leader with the fastest time in the field. Go Go Dolly is the overlay with the market at $15.00 and the sectionals showing good early speed.

Top 3 + Roughie ($11.50 pool)

1. Dad Bod (No.1) — $2.90 / $1.72
Bet $11.50 Win, return $33.35
Prob 27.0% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.78x Steady since tip
Why He's been backed heavily and he's the best of the form in a race where nobody is commanding. He's a first-up runner off 90 days, and his first-up record is good enough to take him seriously. Lek Maloney has the ride.
2. Fussy As (No.2) — $3.20 / $1.72
Bet Tracked
Prob 26.9% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.86x Steady since tip
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Aggressive (No.4) — $5.00 / $2.35
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.6% | Place: 27.8% | Value: 0.73x Steady since tip
Why He's a leader who has been close at times, and he's first-up off 83 days with a first-up record of 3 starts, 0 wins and 1 third.
Roughie: Sweet Kick (No.3) — $11.00 / $3.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.5% | Place: 17.8% | Value: 0.83x Steady since tip
Why He's drawn wide at barrier 7, but he's got a late run if the leaders go too hard. He's had strong sectional finishes, and he's the danger if the front pair come back to the field.

Race 5 – Congratulations Ethan Brown Hcp (58)

Race type: Restricted 58, 1100m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with Grinzinger Tundra from barrier 3 and Vatican Rose from barrier 2 as the two leaders, so the lead is contested. Lean On Me is in the midfield from barrier 1, which gives him the sit and the back-half shape works in his favour. Bodmin Boy and Pub Crawl are drawn wide and need cover, and the shape helps them too.
Punty read: Lean On Me is the bet, $10.50 Win, and this is one of my favourite plays on the day. He's been second over 1400m and second over 1200m in his last two starts, so the form is there. Stan Tsaikos has the ride and the shape helps the midfield runners. The danger is Vatican Rose who leads from barrier 2 with a strong sectional time, and Grinzinger Tundra, who is the first-up runner off 95 days with a first-up record of 3 starts, 1 win and 1 third.

Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)

1. Lean On Me (No.5) — $4.80 / $2.25
Bet $10.50 Win, return $50.40
Prob 22.9% | Place: 26.6% | Value: 1.10x Steady since tip
Why He's the horse in form, with a second over 1400m last start and a second over 1200m before that, and he gets the trip from midfield. Ms K Petrick and Stan Tsaikos have the combination on the card.
2. Vatican Rose (No.4) — $3.30 / $1.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.9% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.72x Steady since tip
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Grinzinger Tundra (No.1) — $3.90 / $1.95
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.4% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.72x Steady since tip
Why He's first-up off 95 days and his first-up record is good, so he's a genuine chance from the lead.
Roughie: Revolution Rising (No.2) — $9.00 / $3.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.8% | Place: 17.8% | Value: 0.71x Steady since tip
Why He's been placed a few times on good and he's drawn in the middle. If the leaders falter and the midfield collapses, he's a live roughie.

Race 6 – Swank Shoes Hcp (70)

Race type: Restricted 70, 1600m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Grinzinger Lass uncontested on the map from barrier 5, and nearest pressure from Mummsie at barrier 8 and Okesutora at barrier 7. Magarten sits midfield from barrier 9, so he's wide, and the shape is slightly against him. Mr Jones and Sheer Reward are the ones the shape helps, and the pace will likely set up a close finish.
Punty read: Magarten is the bet, $13.00 Win, and he's the one with the best recent form. He won over 1400m last start and was third over the same trip before that, and the place rate on the card is high. He's drawn wide at barrier 9 and the shape is against him, but he's proven he can win from difficult spots. The danger is Matron Samsing who is in the midfield and has the sectionals to finish, and Grinzinger Lass who has the uncontested lead. Mummsie is the roughie, drawn wide from barrier 8, with a placing over 1600m last start.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

1. Magarten (No.1) — $3.20 / $1.40
Bet $13.00 Win, return $41.60
Prob 26.2% | Place: 62.0% | Value: 0.84x Steady since tip
Why He's the horse with the form and the trip, and he's won over 1400m in his last start. Lek Maloney has the ride. The weight is up 5kg from last start, but he's been good at lighter weights, so he's fine here.
2. Matron Samsing (No.3) — $4.00 / $1.57
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.0% | Place: 56.9% | Value: 0.84x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.57 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Grinzinger Lass (No.2) — $4.20 / $1.62
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.5% | Place: 52.2% | Value: 0.73x Steady since tip
Why She's the only leader on the map and has the fastest last 600 and last 400 in the race. She's won at 1600m before, so she's a serious danger if she can make the pace hold up.
Roughie: Mummsie (No.5) — $9.50 / $2.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.9% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.85x Steady since tip
Why He's drawn wide at barrier 8 and he's on the speed, so he can find the front if the pace falters. He's won at 1400m before and has a placing at 1600m recently.

SEQUENCE LANES

QUADDIE (R3-R6)

Smart: 6,3 / 1,2,4 / 1,4,5 / 1,3,2 (54 combos x $0.3704 = $20.00) -- 37% flexi
Punty's take: Race 3 and Race 4 are open enough that all four legs are a worry, and Race 5 and Race 6 have a clear favourite but still a wide spread. The flexi floor is 32.4%, so you're not getting much cover from the quaddie. This is a high-risk ticket with a lot of combinations, so it's an entertainment play as much as a serious bet, and a quaddie only pays well if one of the $5 to $10 winners lands.

NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK

1 - Winkers come off again
Startyourengine has the winkers off again in Race 1, and his last start was a 5th at Pioneer Park 1100m where he was held up with a slow start. Watch whether the gear change changes his early position.
2 - First-up runner with a good record
Dad Bod is first-up off 90 days, and his first-up record is 2 starts, 1 win and 1 second. He's been backed heavily from $4.00 to $2.90, and the market is taking notice.
3 - Sheer Reward has drifted out to $126.00
The market has basically given up on this one, going from $61.00 to $126.00 in Race 6. If the pace goes as hot as the map suggests, somebody at that price will get a look-in, but I'm not paying for it.

FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY

Mapleton Hill is at $1.90 and I'm not pretending I love it, but the numbers say he's the one to beat, so I've put the money where my mouth is. Keep your stakes sensible, back the pick you actually like, and don't chase the roughies off the back of a bad bet. See you at the bar after the last race, you Degenerates.
