Rightio Loose Units, Bundaberg on a Good track where the front runners get first dibs on the Champagne tap. This is one of those cards where you can feel the racing shape early, like when you walk into the pub and smell trouble. Speed is king, rail is true, and a couple of these races have that same vibe, one bloke is gonna do the heavy lifting and everyone else's job is to make it interesting.

Punty's take:

Race 1 and Race 2 are set up like two separate TV shows. Race 1 is the "front runner tries to run the plot" episode, Amphawa at barrier 1 is in the driver's seat and the others are basically auditioning for second. Race 2 is more of a "class bully with a case" type, Resolute Lady looks like she'll control the race shape and give herself every chance to nick the right moment.

Then Race 3 and Race 4 are where you earn your stripes. Race 3 has that slow tempo look, which means the best traveller wins, and Corkscrew has the cleanest style to go from handy to deadly. Race 4 is a tiny maiden plate, and with small fields it turns into a straight shootout, Not Happening is the one to beat and the others are mainly there to fill the gaps if the winner sneezes.

Race 5 is the sneaky one. Rapid Dude looks like the type that gets first crack, but Devil Rider is the place play lever I want to pull, because this race is built for that "hit the line strong" finish.

What it means for you:

Keep your tickets simple. Win exposure is reserved for the races that actually match the pace scenario, Amphawa, Resolute Lady, Corkscrew, and Not Happening all fit the "this horse gets the right run" box. For the rest, the money move today is Place, especially in Race 5 where Devil Rider is the value place lever and not just a random name.

This is speed vs finish. Amphawa at barrier 1 is basically the bloke who walks up to the bar first and orders before the rest have even found their mates. Stella Boo and Braidwood Prince are the natural stalking threats, both capable of sitting closer and asking the question earlier than the plodders want. Gold Revolution is the "rough it up" option, but he's coming in with a bit of a weight jump and a wider type profile, so he's got more to do than the front.

But the key is you want the one that's most likely to be in range at the business end, and that's Resolute Lady.

Holiday Dreams is the value angle that can build up into it, while Frosty Bear is more of a "if it breaks your way" type, particularly with how tempo can turn into a sprint for home.

Small field maiden plate, so it's basically a dartboard game with fewer darts. Not Happening at No.4 is the one to beat, profile says she's going to be in the right part of the race and finish off. Alvitar looks the main upside danger if she can jump clean and hold the position, and Happy Coffee is the "if they go too fast, she's there for the scraps" type. But the main lane is Not Happening, she's the one with the cleanest "turn up and win" story.

This is the "front piece does the job early, then the finishers fight it out" race. Rapid Dude looks like she'll take them along and put herself on the right part of the track, so the win bet makes sense. Duke Of Lancaster is the classy danger if the race shapes up for him. But the value lever is Devil Rider in the place lane, because he can sit in range and hit the line hard, especially if the pace turns into a strength contest in the last 300.

On a Good strip with rail true, the "third in from the speed" types get paid. If you're way off the pace too early, you're basically praying like it's amateur hour.

2 - Race 5 rewards the place lever more than the hero win
In this 1380m, the finish is where the money usually lives. Rapid Dude is your clean win story, but the place runs are where the race shape really pays you back.

3 - The small-field races punish saver logic
Race 4 is a classic, no place cushions, so if you're not backing the right horse to win, you're usually just donating. In small fields you either have a straight win plan, or you should zip it.
