Punty's Early Mail
For all of Punty's tips for Junction, head to https://punty.ai/tips/junction-2026-09-05
Rightio Loose Units, Junction on a Good 3 with the rail true, cloud clearing and bugger-all rain, so this is set up like a pub fight, quick early, then you see who's got the real bottle. Pace is there to be used in a couple of races, and in the others it's the classic, you better be in the right spot when the music changes.
Big picture for the day, I'm stacking the spine with Danea Rock, Odin Omen, and Soaring Solo. Three different races, three different styles, all with that "get there and you're in it" vibe. Then you've got a pile of clever value places where the market might be getting a bit brave, plus a roughie or two where the price drift has me doing the side-eye.
Now let's go race by race, because Saturday, Sunday, Monday, it don't matter, I'm backing horses, not spreadsheets.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Junction, 1400-1900m card
Rail: True
Official going: Good (updated from Good 3) (expected to play Fair, clean, not a mudlark-fest)
Weather: Cloud clearing, 14C, humidity 93%, wind 5km/h SW (watch for nothing major, this is basically Good 3 running all day)
Early lane guess: On-pacers with a mid-pack stalking lane, especially around the 1400s
Tempo profile: Slow-ish early sprints, then genuine pressure in the 1900, with some mid race cruising
Jockeys to follow:
Alex Hearn: Calm, measured and hits his straps when the pace maps nicely, plus he's got a couple of runners that look ready to pounce.
Lisa Staples: Can sit off and still land shots, and she's got horses drawn where they should get a proper run into the bend.
Ebony Johnson: The closer type who benefits when the race gets "everyone for themselves" in the run home.
Stables to respect:
Cliff Howe (6 runners): Track and rider targets look real today, especially where speed holds on the Good 3.
Aaron Pateman (2 runners): Backing up in handicaps, and when they go forward, they do it properly.
Leigh Murray (2 runners): Maiden day, but these blokes know how to have one ready to pop the cherry.
Punty's take: Junction is serving up that Good 3 where the rails are true, but the track's still speed-friendly. If you're buried on the wrong half of the field in the 1400s, you're basically watching the race from the wrong postcode. Race 1 screams "pace is everything" with that slow tempo set up and a solo runner advantaged, so I'm leaning hard into the horse that can hold a position without needing chaos to save it.
Across the middle races, the story changes from "lead or die" to "stalk and pounce", especially where gear changes and barrier placement matter. Race 2 is a maiden where a couple look like they've just been waiting for the right map and the right moment, and I'm with the two that are bred and prepped to crack it, not just run around.
Then Race 6, that Junction Cup style 1900, it's proper genuine pace. I want the horse that can be in the game early without getting cooked, Odin Omen looks like he's got the run where he can unwind late without doing everything the hard way.
What it means for you: Aggressive early in Race 1 and Race 2, that's where my confidence lives. I'm not overcomplicating it either, if you can get a clean run into the race story, you're halfway home on a Good 3.
For the rest, you protect your ticket with value and place intent. Race 3 and Race 4 are both "run the race properly and you've got a chance to grab a cheque" type races, so each way is the play on the strongest shapes and the place leverage types.
If you want one simple game plan, it's this, put it where the map suits, then let the finish do the talking. Don't get cute in the races that want position. Save your chaos for your roughie, and make it count.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
These are the three bets the day leans on.
1 - Soaring Solo (Race 1, No.4) — $3.70
Why Pace suits and he should get every chance to do the job the right way on a true rail Good 3.
2 - Danea Rock (Race 2, No.4) — $3.05
Why Maiden with the right profile to strike now, and the stable looks like they've got intent, not hope.
3 - Odin Omen (Race 6, No.9) — $3.60
Why He maps to get into the fight late without needing the race to fall apart.
Multi (all three to win): $10 × ~41 = ~$410 collect
Race 1 – Pace vs Patience
Race type: HANDICAP, 1400m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, Soaring Solo has the pace advantage of a solo run vibe, with others a bit disadvantaged
Punty read: This is the classic Junction "don't get cute" 1400. Slow tempo means the horses with a genuine positioning advantage are the ones that get first use of the sprint lane late. Soaring Solo is sitting where he can control the rhythm, and that is gold on a Good 3 when the rail's true and the field strings out.
Lacevinsky and Royal Gap look like they'll be there early too, but I don't love how dependent they look on finding clean air all the way through, especially with interference and bumps in recent runs. Blowin' Smoke has talent and could be there late, but my ticket wants the horse that gets the right run without needing a fairytale.
Top 3 + Roughie ($12.00 pool)
1. Soaring Solo (No.4) — $3.70 / $1.85
Bet $12.00 Win, return $44.40
Prob 20.3% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 0.95x
Why He's got the pace advantage and the solo-rhythm style, which fits a slow 1400 on a true-rail Good 3.
2. Blowin' Smoke (No.5) — $5.00 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.9% | Place: 27.9% | Value: 1.20x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Warby Ranges (No.7) — $6.20 / $2.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.2% | Place: 17.3% | Value: 1.26x
Why Strong place intent profile, but the betting structure here doesn't pay you enough for the risk.
Roughie: Dragonflies (No.6) — $16.75 / $5.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 3.9% | Place: 12.2% | Value: 0.82x
Why For him to win, you need a pace collapse plus everything to click, that's a lot of eggs in one basket.
Race 2 – Maiden Mayhem
Race type: MAIDEN, 1400m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, Coupe Deburj and Tiny Champion advantaged early
Punty read: This maiden's shaped like it's going to reward the horse that settles and then actually hits the line. Danea Rock drawn inside has the easiest job of the lot, and the value picture suggests the market might be under-rating the chance of a proper winning effort.
Coupe Deburj is the other key. He's got that stalking map and, if the field doesn't sprint apart early, he's in the right lane to sweep through. Radio Silence is there for a place glance, but I'm not reaching for it at that price band. I want more certainty, less "might sneak in".
Top 3 + Roughie ($21.00 pool)
1. Danea Rock (No.4) — $3.05 / $1.45
Bet $17.00 Win, return $51.85
Prob 26.7% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.15x
Why Inside draw, gear that brings him into focus, and the way the pace is sitting means he can get to the right part of the track.
2. Coupe Deburj (No.5) — $3.05 / $1.45
Bet $4.00 Place, return $5.80
Prob 25.9% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.15x
Why Stays in play with the run pattern, and if the leaders overcook it he's got the perfect "run on" script.
3. Radio Silence (No.7) — $4.45 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.2% | Place: 54.5% | Value: 0.84x
Why The rough trim is there, but the place band doesn't pay enough for how this one profiles in this field.
Roughie: Winlosewedrinkbooz (No.3) — $15.00 / $3.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.4% | Place: 21.4% | Value: 1.18x
Why He can pop into it, but he needs more than a normal race, he needs the race to look his way early.
Race 3 – Stayers Who Mean It
Race type: HANDICAP, 1400m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, several midfield types fighting for position
Punty read: This is a slow 1400 where the run home matters, and Ellovaman looks like the sort that can keep finding a bit every time someone asks a question. Space Ace is the place leverage play, and he's the one I want running at the finish without needing a speed map miracle.
Deal Obtained and Le Troy are the sort who can sneak into the first four if the race breaks open, but I'm not building anything risky on them when the place options are cleaner. Jet Planes is capable, but it's more of a "if the gaps come" type.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. Space Ace (No.6) — $3.70 / $1.55
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P), return $24.05 (wins) / $10.08 (places)
Prob 19.5% | Place: 63.6% | Value: 0.92x
Why Slow pace suits his style, and he should be there when the field starts handing out openings.
2. Ellovaman (No.4) — $5.95 / $1.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.7% | Place: 56.2% | Value: 1.43x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Deal Obtained (No.3) — $5.60 / $1.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.4% | Place: 44.2% | Value: 0.96x
Why He can run a cheeky race, but place value isn't strong enough to justify a bet here.
Roughie: Novatorio (No.1) — $18.00 / $3.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 3.4% | Place: 12.8% | Value: 0.77x
Why He needs a big turn of events, and in a slow 1400 that's a taller order than people think.
Race 4 – Short Course, Long Drama
Race type: HANDICAP, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, pace is there but it won't be a drag race
Punty read: 1200 on a Good 3 is all about speed positioning, then who can keep the engine running through the lane. Costa Star is the danger on the map, and I've got him as the base each way, because even if he doesn't win, he's the type to keep giving you a chance at the finish.
Mrs Kangaroo and Dashing Diva both look like they can be thereabouts, but the betting structure is basically telling me, "don't over-insure". Rose Of Denmark is the rougher in spirit, but the safer approach is to stick with the value each way and let the rest be lane noise.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Costa Star (No.4) — $3.75 / $1.62
Bet $10.50 Each Way ($5.25W + $5.25P), return $19.69 (wins) / $8.51 (places)
Prob 16.2% | Place: 44.2% | Value: 0.79x
Why He profiles to hold his ground in a short sprint where the rail helps the on-pacers.
2. Mrs Kangaroo (No.1) — $5.35 / $1.82
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.5% | Place: 63.0% | Value: 0.93x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Dashing Diva (No.6) — $6.50 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.6% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 1.05x
Why Place chance is there, but it doesn't line up with the paying band for this structure.
Roughie: Rose Of Denmark (No.7) — $9.60 / $2.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.6% | Place: 28.5% | Value: 0.94x
Why If it's a scrappy 1200 and she finds a lane, she could run on hard, but she's not the cleanest bet.
Race 5 – 1200 Grind (No Mercy)
Race type: HANDICAP, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, Shooting Kontiki has early advantage
Punty read: This one's got that "who's toughest in the last 200m" vibe. Weapons Hot can be dangerous if he gets a clean trip, but my main focus is Mars Mission because he's got the profile to keep working through the line without needing everything to go perfect.
Limahuli is a live one for the rough stuff, and Intoxicating is the value roughie-type, but again, the day wants sensible aggression. Get Mars Mission in, protect with the right structure, and don't go inventing extra pain.
Top 3 + Roughie ($12.00 pool)
1. Mars Mission (No.5) — $4.10 / $2.00
Bet $12.00 Win, return $49.20
Prob 19.1% | Place: 36.6% | Value: 1.00x
Why He fits the tempo and the 1200 pattern, and he's the one I trust most to keep finding in the final straight.
2. Weapons Hot (No.1) — $4.20 / $2.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.0% | Place: 36.6% | Value: 0.96x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Limahuli (No.4) — $4.65 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.8% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.05x
Why A little bit of value, but not enough to justify a bet when we've already got the main win play locked.
Roughie: Intoxicating (No.9) — $9.40 / $3.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.3% | Place: 17.3% | Value: 0.99x
Why If the back end starts rolling forward, he can smoke them late, but he needs the gaps.
Race 6 – Junction Cup Football
Race type: BenchMark 62+, 1900m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, Tiff's Lad is a leader and Odin Omen has the late punch profile
Punty read: 1900 on Good 3 with genuine tempo is where you separate "fast early" from "keeps going". Tiff's Lad wants to roll, that's the whole deal, but if the race truly runs, the back half can cash in if they've got the right settle and burst.
Odin Omen is the winner play for me. He's got the kind of profile where the pace doesn't stop him, it sets him up. Gondrinkin is the type to be involved, but I'm not paying for hope at $4.30 and losing the plot on the win. Beautiful Baroque is the rougher, but she's still got that "needs the perfect run and a bit of luck" element.
Top 3 + Roughie ($19.00 pool)
1. Odin Omen (No.9) — $3.60 / $1.55
Bet $14.00 Win, return $50.40
Prob 22.7% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.07x
Why Genuine pace in front usually makes it harder to run down, but Odin Omen's got the late gears to grab a win.
2. Tiff's Lad (No.3) — $5.00 / $1.70
Bet $5.00 Place, return $8.50
Prob 16.2% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 1.06x
Why Blinkers off plus early intent, and with real tempo he should still be there for a place.
3. Gondrinkin (No.7) — $4.30 / $1.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.7% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 0.77x
Why He's live, but the paying band makes it a bit of a trap.
Roughie: Beautiful Baroque (No.5) — $9.60 / $2.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.2% | Place: 25.2% | Value: 0.91x
Why She's got real value if she gets the run, but she's not the cleanest way to win your money today.
SEQUENCE LANES
Quaddie (R3-R6)
Smart: 6,4,3,2 / 1,4,6,7 / 1,5,4 / 9,3,7,5 (192 combos x $0.34 = $65.00) -- 34% flexi
Wide open legs in the middle, especially the later races, so this is entertainment with teeth, not a banker.
Punty's take: It's an all-shape quaddie, four open legs, you're banking on at least one of those bigger price swings to show up. Had to stay wide to make the maths work, so keep expectations fun.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - Place leverage is the boss when it's slow.
This track on Good 3 rewards horses that can keep running through the lane, the slow tempo 1400s are where your place money is safest.
2 - Watch the drift, but don't chase it like a maniac.
Where prices drift (like Dragonflies in Race 1), the win might still be there, but the value angle is usually not where the punters are looking.
3 - Junction 1900 is pace, then survival, then the late hit.
If the race goes genuinely, Odin Omen style runners get a perfect "unwind late" scenario, and that's when Cup races turn nasty for early front-runners.
FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY
Alright legends, today feels like three horses can win with the map doing what it's supposed to do, and everything else is just filler noise until the finish. Send it, but keep it smart, don't tilt chasing. Gamble Responsibly.
