Punty's Punts
Race type: Maiden, 1600m
Map & tempo: Slow pace on paper, with nobody mapping to lead. Champagne Sabre from barrier 7 and Bologna Baby from barrier 8 are the likeliest to find the front, and Bologna Baby has to work from the wide draw. The shape gives the back half a run, with Fantasy Reel, Aitana and Almorina all helped, so the closers get the nod.
Punty read: Jack Will is the bet. He settles back from barrier 6 and the shape suits him, plus he was bumped and hampered in his last start at Warrnambool. Tom Madden rides and the market has shortened him from $2.46 to $2.12. Champagne Sabre is the danger, because he ran third at Warrnambool last start at 3.2L and sits on the speed from barrier 7. Cashemcowboy has come in hard from $20.83 to $9.20 and is one to watch if the market keeps moving.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. Jack Will (No.11) — $2.12 / $1.13 🏆 5TH
Bet $13.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$13.00
Prob 30.6% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.65x
Why Settles back and the shape helps him. He was bumped and hampered at Warrnambool last start, which is a fair excuse for a 6th. Tom Madden on, and the trainer has 11.9% over the last 100.
2. Almorina (No.7) — $5.90 / $1.75 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.9% | Place: 50.8% | Value: 1.00x
Why A real chance — but at $1.75 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Champagne Sabre (No.2) — $6.60 / $1.82 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.1% | Place: 45.7% | Value: 0.93x
Why Third at Warrnambool last start at 3.2L and on the speed from barrier 7. He's the one to watch if Jack Will gets held up early.
Roughie: Fantasy Reel (No.3) — $9.40 / $2.35 🏆 8TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.4% | Place: 36.9% | Value: 0.98x
Why Blinkers go on for the first time, he was third at Colac 1200m last start at 5.8L, and he sits back from barrier 10. If the shape holds up and the closers get the run through the straight, he could be the one that flies late.
Race type: Maiden, 1300m
Map & tempo: Slow pace with nobody mapping to lead or sit handy. Back Up Barbie, Cape Radstock, Queen Of The Top and Keepy Uppy are all in the back half and the shape helps them. Back Up Barbie is midfield from barrier 13, which is a wide draw and a shape working against her, so she needs to be quick out of the gates to find a spot.
Punty read: Back Up Barbie is the bet. She's the market's best backed runner in this race and the shape is against her, but she has a second at Mildura last start and a trainer who is hot. Queen Of The Top is the one I'd be worried about, because he's a backmarker from barrier 1 and the shape is made for him. Cape Radstock is the closer with the best path if the early speed fades.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. Back Up Barbie (No.6) — $2.56 / $1.25 🏆 WINNER
Bet $13.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$20.28
Prob 34.4% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.88x
Why She ran second at Mildura last start at 4L and fourth at Echuca before that. Zac Moore rides, and C Maher is 17.0% over the last 100 with the stable hot. The draw and the shape are against her, but she has the credentials.
2. Queen Of The Top (No.10) — $4.70 / $1.65 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.0% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.80x
Why A real chance — but at $1.65 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Cape Radstock (No.7) — $6.60 / $1.90 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.0% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.92x
Why Dean Yendall rides and the trainer is 19.0% over the last 100. He's a closer from barrier 12 in a race where the back half gets the shape.
Roughie: Prince Iadora (No.3) — $11.50 / $2.60 🏆 5TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.5% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.97x
Why Fifth at Warrnambool 1300m last start at 4.1L, and Tom Dabernig is hot at 15.5% over the last 100. Darryl Horner rides from barrier 5. If the front-runners stop, he has a sporting chance from midfield.
Race type: Maiden, 1100m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace on paper with two leaders. Ramelle from barrier 4 and Villa Grande from barrier 2 both want the front, and the inside draw gives Villa Grande the first crack. The shape favours the back half, with Brazen Martini drawn wide from barrier 10 and helped most, which is why the leader is the one with the trouble here.
Punty read: Villa Grande is the bet. She's the strongest in the field on form, a two-from-two second effort on good tracks, blinkers on for the first time and winkers off. The shape works against her, so she has to get the lead and hold it. Ramelle is the danger, because he has the speed and the trainer is 20.0% hot, and if they fight for the lead the race may come back to him.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Villa Grande (No.10) — $1.54 / $1.01 🏆 5TH
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 59.4% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.91x
Why Two seconds from two starts, both at Warrnambool over 1000m, with blinkers on for the first time. The inside draw helps and Linda Meech has a 16.3% strike rate at this track. The shape is against her, so she needs to lead from barrier 2 and that's the race.
2. Ramelle (No.5) — $3.70 / $1.25 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.8% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.62x
Why A real chance — but at $1.25 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Starseatic (No.9) — $8.60 / $1.85 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.1% | Place: 54.1% | Value: 0.87x
Why On the speed from barrier 7 and his last start was a 4th at Horsham 1100m at 5.8L. He has the trail if the leaders go too hard.
Roughie: Classy Sassy (No.4) — $16.50 / $2.75 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.9% | Place: 33.5% | Value: 0.81x
Why Nose roll goes on for the first time, and he was second at Colac 800m last start at 0.1L. He sits on the speed from barrier 5 and needs the two leaders to tie each other up.
Race type: Benchmark 56, 1100m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with a lot of runners wanting the front. Thunder Park from barrier 5, Becauseyou're Mine from barrier 11, Abby's Crossword from barrier 4 and Money Honey from barrier 3 are the likeliest to find the lead, so the speed is there. Money Honey sits handy and the shape is against her, while Shyleah from the back is helped most, so the closers have a real chance.
Punty read: Money Honey is the bet. Dean Yendall rides, the trainer has been hot at 13.0% over the last 100, and she has form on soft ground. The shape is against her, but she can still win from the front or just behind the leaders. Becauseyou're Mine is the danger on the place line, and Imacreedytwo is the one who could sneak in if the speed fights itself.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Money Honey (No.8) — $2.44 / $1.22 🏆 4TH
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 28.9% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.71x
Why One win and one second from two starts on soft, and a 5th at Kyneton last start at 2.3L. Dean Yendall rides, and the combo has a 7.4% strike rate. The weight record is one from two lighter and none from three heavier, so the lighter run is what I like.
2. Becauseyou're Mine (No.4) — $7.60 / $2.25 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.0% | Place: 42.0% | Value: 1.14x
Why A real chance — but at $2.25 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Imacreedytwo (No.6) — $8.20 / $2.30 🏆 5TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.6% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.20x
Why A 2nd at Mt Gambier 900m last start at 0.2L and he sits midfield from barrier 2. The trainer is 9.0% hot over the last 100, and Neil Farley is on.
Roughie: Flying Straz (No.5) — $17.00 / $3.50 🏆 9TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.9% | Place: 24.1% | Value: 0.83x
Why He won at Donald 1000m and Coleraine 1000m in his last few starts, so the short-trip form is real. He's midfield from barrier 8 and a closing run could find him if the leaders wear each other down.
Race type: Benchmark 52, 1300m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Runway Ruler the only one mapping to lead, and he's drawn wide from barrier 10. Knock Of Beers from barrier 3 and Steely Hustler from barrier 5 are the closest pressure, so Runway Ruler will go to the front and take the sting out of it. Bare To Witness and Dangerous Secret from the back are helped most, while the leader is hurt most by the pace.
Punty read: Steely Hustler is the bet. He sits handy from barrier 5, has form on soft tracks and Dean Yendall is on. He's the one who can take a leader who is hurt by the shape, and the market has him at $3.50 with a strong place price. Runway Ruler is the danger on the lead, but the pace is ready to shut him down. Triomphe closes from barrier 9 and has the sectional form to get there at the finish.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Steely Hustler (No.10) — $3.60 / $1.60 🏆 2ND
Bet $10.50 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$10.50
Prob 31.2% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.12x
Why Three starts at weights of 58 to 59kg without a win, which is the one note of caution. But he has 4 soft starts with a third and he ran sixth at St Arnaud last start at 1.1L. Dean Yendall and a 13.0% combo strike rate sweeten the deal.
2. Runway Ruler (No.4) — $3.65 / $1.52 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.6% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.64x
Why A real chance — but at $1.52 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Triomphe (No.2) — $6.60 / $2.05 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.5% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.09x
Why Fast closing sectionals, a second on track and a closing run from barrier 9. He was eighth at St Arnaud last start at 2.8L, but the pace suits him.
Roughie: Dangerous Secret (No.9) — $16.50 / $3.60 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.1% | Place: 24.1% | Value: 0.84x
Why He has the fastest time sectional in his record, and the shape helps him from barrier 12. He was third at Mt Gambier 900m last start at 0.2L. If the genuine pace hurts the front, he's the closer who can run down the field.
Race type: Benchmark 78, 2000m
Map & tempo: Slow pace with Omnic the only one likely to lead, and he's drawn wide from barrier 10. The shape is against him and the back half is helped most, with Tikemyson and Pianta both midfield-based and helped. Aftermath from barrier 1 has the inside draw and sits midfield, which is the perfect place to be if the pace stays slow.
Punty read: Aftermath is the bet. He won at St Arnaud 2000m last start at 2.2L, and the trip is right for him. Linda Meech rides and the trainer is 19.0% hot. The market has shortened him from $5.49 to $3.35 and that's money I can read. Omnic is the danger on the lead, but the pace is against him, and Unseen Ruler is the one who can get into the placings at the finish.
Top 3 + Roughie ($7.50 pool)
1. Aftermath (No.1) — $3.35 / $1.45
Bet $7.50 Win
Prob 24.1% | Place: 54.1% | Value: 0.81x
Why He won at St Arnaud 2000m last start and the trip is right for him. Soft 17:2-0-0 and the inside draw from barrier 1 suits his midfield running style. The shape helps him, and the market has backed him heavily.
2. Omnic (No.9) — $5.30 / $1.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.6% | Place: 43.9% | Value: 0.83x
Why A real chance — but at $1.75 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Unseen Ruler (No.2) — $5.80 / $1.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.4% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.89x
Why Midfield from barrier 9 and Dean Yendall is on. He was fourth at Hamilton 1600m last start with a slow start and interference, and the combo has a 13.9% strike rate.
Roughie: Tikemyson (No.3) — $9.60 / $2.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.0% | Place: 29.3% | Value: 0.76x
Why He won at Avoca 1860m last start at 0.5L, and Alana Kelly rides. Midfield from barrier 2 with the shape working in his favour, and if the back half gets the run he has a path.
Race type: Benchmark 56, 2000m
Map & tempo: Slow pace with Julep the one likely to lead from barrier 6. The back half is helped most, with Unamerican and Bell's Bighouse coming from the back, and Princess Sakiko from midfield barrier 2 has the shape helping her. Several runners are drawn wide and need cover, so the inside runners have an advantage.
Punty read: Princess Sakiko is the bet. She won at Avoca 1860m last start at 1.5L, and the shape helps her from midfield. Linda Meech rides, and the combo is 25.0% over three rides. The market has shortened her from $7.69 to $3.55, which is money I'm happy to follow. Julep is the danger on the lead, with Dean Yendall riding and a sharp run at St Arnaud last start.
Top 3 + Roughie ($7.50 pool)
1. Princess Sakiko (No.8) — $3.55 / $1.57
Bet $7.50 Win
Prob 26.7% | Place: 61.5% | Value: 0.95x
Why She won at Avoca last start and has the shape in her favour from barrier 2. Linda Meech is on, and she has a class edge at this level. Cross-over nose band and tongue tie are both on for the first time, so the gear change needs watching.
2. Julep (No.10) — $5.40 / $2.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.0% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.86x
Why A real chance — but at $2.00 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Kingsford (No.1) — $4.80 / $1.72
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.6% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.65x
Why Bumped and hampered at Warrnambool last start, and a fifth at Horsham 1800m before that. Zac Moore rides from barrier 1 and the shape helps him.
Roughie: Black Rutile (No.7) — $9.60 / $2.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.0% | Place: 27.8% | Value: 0.67x
Why Distance form is strong, with six starts over the trip and three seconds, and he ran second at Hamilton 2200m last start at 0.4L. He sits midfield from barrier 9, and a stayer's run late in the race is the path.
That's the ticket as I struck it — the legs below are exactly what ran, no rewriting history.
Smart: 8,6 / 10,4,2 / 1,2,9 / 8,10,1 (54 combos x $0.3704 = $20.00) -- 37% flexi
The day's multi leans on three win legs across the card.
1 - Back Up Barbie (Race 2, No.6)✓ Won — $2.56
2 - Villa Grande (Race 3, No.10)✗ — $1.54
3 - Steely Hustler (Race 5, No.10)✗ — $3.50

Punty's Early Mail
Rightio Legends, Mortlake on a Soft 5 with 3mm in the last 24 hours and a shower or two on the way, plus a possible storm, so the track is wet and the wind is a nuisance. Seven races, 93 runners, and the best bet of the day is a fat little multi that leans on a horse who has finished second at the front of the market twice. Grab a coffee, put your glasses on and let's get into it.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Mortlake, 1100m to 2000m card
Rail: True Entire Circuit
Official going: Soft 5 (3mm last 24 hours, 29mm last 7 days)
Weather: Shower or two. Possible storm, 17°C, humidity 87%, wind 31km/h WSW
Early lane guess: unknown pre-race, watch the first two
Tempo profile: Mostly slow on the card. Race 3 and Race 4 are the only moderate-paced races with a real fight at the front, Race 5 is the lone genuine-pace race where the leader is uncontested, and Races 1, 2, 6 and 7 are all slow with the back half getting the shape.
Jockeys to follow:
Dean Yendall: 7 rides, including Money Honey in Race 4, Steely Hustler in Race 5 and Julep in Race 7. He has a 15.4% strike rate at this track on 1218 rides, and that is the biggest rider edge on the card.
Linda Meech: 6 rides, including Villa Grande in Race 3, Aftermath in Race 6 and Princess Sakiko in Race 7. Her 16.3% strike rate at Mortlake is the same as Yendall's and she is on two of my three Big 3 horses.
Tom Madden: 6 rides, including Jack Will in Race 1 and Becauseyou're Mine in Race 4. His 9.0% L100 rate as a jockey is the warmest of the three.
Stables to respect:
Symon Wilde (4 runners): Almorina, Ramelle, Tikemyson and Semper Fortis. Ramelle is the stable's most likely to be near the front in Race 3, and the trainer's 20.0% L100 strike rate at this track is the hottest on the card.
C Maher (3 runners): Back Up Barbie, Peace Seeker and Omnic. Back Up Barbie is my Race 2 pick and the trainer has been hot lately at 17.0% over the last 100.
Jamie Edwards (3 runners): Champagne Sabre, Billy Be Good and Steely Hustler. Steely Hustler is my Race 5 pick and the stable has a 10.2% strike rate here on 263 wins from 2589 rides.
Punty's take: Mortlake is a track where the speed is going to be hard to find, and that is good news for anyone who likes to sit back and wait. Race 1 is a maiden that looks set up for the closers, with nobody mapping to lead and the back half helped most. Jack Will is the one I trust, and his place price is short enough that he is the anchor of my Race 1 ticket.
Race 3 is the only race where I expect real tactical pressure, with Ramelle and Villa Grande both wanting the front and the shape hurting the leader. Villa Grande is still my number one horse on the card, because the market has made her a near-certainty at $1.54 and the Big 3 needs her. Race 5 is the chaos race in disguise, with a genuine pace on paper and nobody to challenge Runway Ruler, so the one who settles behind him will be the one that matters.
What it means for you: Be aggressive on Jack Will in Race 1 and Back Up Barbie in Race 2, because both carry strong market support and a decent case. Protect your bankroll in Race 4 and Race 6, where the favourites are short but the second and third picks are going nowhere at their prices. The quaddie is the big ticket: keep Races 4 and 5 tight and let the back half of the sequence breathe through Races 6 and 7.
