Rightio Degenerates, Muswellbrook is sitting on a Soft 5 with the rail 4m out from the 1000m to the 300m, a fine arvo, and gusts up to 25.9km/h doing their best to ruin someone's plans. Seven races, 84 runners and a card that rewards the punter who reads the speed map before the coffee goes cold.

MEET SNAPSHOT

Track: Muswellbrook, 900m to 1750m card
Rail: 4m from 1000m - 300m where cutaway applies
Official going: Soft 5 (Nil rain last 24 hours, 13mm last 7 days)
Weather: Fine, gusts 25.9km/h, 40%+ chance of rain at 20:00
Early lane guess: unknown pre-race, watch the first two
Tempo profile: Race 1 Slow, Race 2 Slow, Race 3 Slow, Race 4 Genuine, Race 5 Moderate, Race 6 Genuine, Race 7 Hot. Four of the seven races are going to be run at a walk early, so the sprints with a genuine or hot pace are where the speed freaks get paid.
Jockeys to follow:
Aaron Bullock: rides seven today, and his jockey strike rate at this track is 21.4% (1171/5479) with 26% over his last 100 rides. He's on Costa Del Sol, Roses Imminente and Nearest, three of my four biggest reads on the card.
Grant Buckley: seven rides, a 8.8% strike rate at this track (1024/11578). Bally Isle in Race 7 is the one that wants watching, with Who Goes There and Bossy Sheila not far behind.
Anna Weatherlake: six rides, 8.7% at this track (12/138) with 7% over the last 100. Her ride on Speck in Race 4 is the one to note in a race shaping up as a genuine pace.
Stables to respect:
T S Howlett (5 runners): five runners across Races 1, 2, 5 and 6, including Clarry's Run and Kahina in Race 6. Their strike rate at this track is the lowest of the big stables, so respect the numbers but don't chase the price.
Carlos Antonio (4 runners): Rosie I Am, Rock'n On Uptown, Morpeth and Nasa Blueberry. Four runners is a lot of bodies for a stable that's only sniffing the front half of the market.
K A Lees (4 runners): Kuldar and Pomelo Chamomile in Race 1, plus Autumn Heir in Race 3 and Tickelova in Race 6. Pomelo Chamomile is the one who carries the Race 1 call, and the stable's Race 1 double is the sort of thing that makes a cheap bet look smart.

Punty's take: Grab a seat, because Muswellbrook has speed all over the card and it's not all in the same place. Race 1 is slow on paper, but Pomelo Chamomile is the most likely to find the front, and nothing else in the field is heading there with any real intent. Race 2 is a thinking man's Mayors Cup with Costa Del Sol sitting at a price that makes most punters wince, and it's not a race I'd touch with a 10 foot pole at that money. Race 4 is the one with a genuine lead on the card: No Statement is the only leader and the forward runners are the ones with the wind in their sails, so the sprint has shape. Race 7 is a hot pace with three runners who want to lead and it's the chaos race of the day, with the speed barely separating itself from the rest. The bankers are in the middle of the card and the chaos is at each end.

What it means for you: Be aggressive on the Big 3 and then sit on your hands until the sprint in Race 4 shows its hand. The middle four races have the best structure for the Quaddie, and Race 5 is the one where the clear favourite has the best chance to hold, so the Quaddie ticket leans on keeping Nearest and Vaguely Red tight. Race 7 is wide open, so the ticket is wider there and the cost stays sensible. Keep your stakes in proportion, because Race 6's Doralee is a good each way play that will sting you if the pace doesn't do its thing. Think about your bankroll before you think about the roughies.

PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI

These are the three bets the day leans on.

1 - Costa Del Sol (Race 2, No.1) — $1.25
Why Won its last start at Muswellbrook over 1280m and is 1st-up 1:1-0-0. It's the shortest price on the card, but the way I read it, it's the one horse in Race 2 that has the form to back up the price.
2 - Roses Imminente (Race 3, No.2) — $2.10
Why Career 18: 3-3-1 and Aaron Bullock has a 21.4% strike rate at this track. Sectionals show L600 and L400 both rank 2, and that's a finisher's record for a horse who needs the race to come to him from the back.
3 - Nearest (Race 5, No.1) — $2.25
Why Has the best sectional on the card for the last 400m (L400 fastest), a combo with Aaron Bullock at 41% (84/205), and the trainer's strike rate here is 28.2%. Three starts for no wins, but three runs that finished 4th, and this is the spot to turn them over.

Multi (all three to win): $10 × 5.91 = $59.10

Race 1 – Pirtek Muswellbrook Mdn Plate

Race type: Maiden, 1000m
Map & tempo: Slow pace on paper, and nobody maps to lead outright. Pomelo Chamomile from barrier 4 is the most likely to find the front, and Time For Speed (barrier 9) and Ariana Reign (barrier 7) are both drawn wide and need cover or luck to get into it. The shape is against our pick in the sense that it sits handy in a race where a few of these will be happy to settle, but the front-running and the early pace are where it can grab the race. Speed is not a big deal here, so the ones that want to get into the race early have the advantage.
Punty read: Pomelo Chamomile is the bet. It's got the sectional on the card (L400 fastest, time rank 3), 4 wins from 6 starts? No, careful: career 6: 0-2-1, so it's a placed horse with 0 wins from 6, and the Win price is $4.00. My read is that the 11th at Illawarra Grange was a bad run with interference listed, and the last-start 2nd at Tuncurry is a better yardstick. Jockey Liam Riordan and trainer K A Lees make up the rest of the case. Lightening Kiss and Time For Speed are the dangers, with Time For Speed's sectional time rank the one to watch if it gets a clean run from the back.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Pomelo Chamomile (No.8) — $4.00 / $1.65
Bet $15.00 Win, return $60.00
Prob 26.1% | Place: 60.5% | Value: 1.04x
Why Leads the way on the speed map at this price and the last-start excuse is a legitimate one. Yet to win on soft (0 wins from 4), but the second up and first up records are placed, and the sectional L400 says it closes well when it gets its chance.
2. Lightening Kiss (No.7) — $4.00 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.60x
Why A real chance — but at $1.65 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Time For Speed (No.2) — $4.50 / $1.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.4% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.65x
Why Won its last start at Muswellbrook 800m, and the sectional time fastest is a good sign. It's a backmarker from barrier 9 so it has to get clear running to win.

Roughie: Another Soiree (No.3) — $11.00 / $2.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.2% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.91x
Why Won its last start at Warwick Farm 815m, and it's out in a cross-over nose band and tongue tie for the first time today. The market has come in from $14.00 to $11.00, so somebody is backing it. If the early pace stays slow and it finds a gap in the straight, it's a sharp outsider with a live finish.

Race 2 – Mayors Cup Country Boosted Hcp (C1)

Race type: Class 1, 1450m
Map & tempo: Slow pace again, and nobody maps to lead. Costa Del Sol from barrier 7 is the one most likely to find the front, but it has to work from the wide draw to get there. Sigsaly from barrier 8 is the one who needs cover. The expected pace hurts Magurtz (midfield) and Archaic Force (back), so the early tempo is a slow burn that suits the ones who sit handy. Costa Del Sol sits handy from barrier 7, and the shape is against it on the numbers, so the form has to carry it.
Punty read: Costa Del Sol is the bet, but at $1.25 it's not a bet you can make a fortune on. It won its last start at Muswellbrook over 1280m and is 1st-up 1:1-0-0, with a combo with Aaron Bullock at 41% (84/205). Magurtz and Sutton Storm are the dangers, with Magurtz's 2nd at Scone 1300m as the freshest form. Archaic Force is the one the pace hurts, so it only gets a look at the roughie price.

Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)

1. Costa Del Sol (No.1) — $1.30 / $1.01
Bet $10.50 Win, return $13.65
Prob 57.5% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.75x
Why First-up winner from one start, last start a win at Muswellbrook over 1280m. The shape is against it on the map, but the form and the Bullock combo carry it.
2. Magurtz (No.2) — $4.40 / $1.17
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.2% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.84x
Why A real chance — but at $1.17 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Sutton Storm (No.3) — $7.00 / $1.52
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.1% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.99x
Why Muswellbrook 1450m 3rd last start over this same distance and it's a 1st-up 2:1-0-0 horse. The market has it at the bigger end but the value is there.

Roughie: Archaic Force (No.5) — $18.00 / $2.45
Bet Tracked
Prob 3.1% | Place: 27.8% | Value: 0.56x
Why Its path is a genuinely slow race that tires a few of the leaders, and it's won on soft (Soft 9:1-0-0). The warning is weight: 0 wins from 2 at 58-58kg, so it's a long ride to get there.

Race 3 – Hollydene Estate Wines (Bm58)

Race type: Benchmark 58, 1750m
Map & tempo: Slow pace over the staying trip and nobody maps to lead or sit handy. Roses Imminente is drawn wide from barrier 10 and has to come from the back with cover. Grafology and Harriet are the two who need to be in the mix at the finish, and the back-half runners all need cover to get involved. The shape is against our pick on the numbers, so the form has to carry it.
Punty read: Roses Imminente is the bet, and it's the horse I'd rather have on a staying track than most of the field. Career 18: 3-3-1 is a good line, and Aaron Bullock's strike rate at this track is 21.4%. The last start was an 8th at Randwick 1600m with a medical or physical issue on the record, which is a legitimate excuse. Weight is up 6kg from last start, which is the one thing to keep in mind. Grafology is the danger from barrier 3 with its 21.2% win chance and Harriet is the one who stalks from the midfield.

Top 3 + Roughie ($7.50 pool)

1. Roses Imminente (No.2) — $2.10 / $1.17
Bet $7.50 Win, return $15.75
Prob 32.7% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.69x
Why Three wins from 18 starts, Soft 8:0-1-0, and Sectionals show L600 and L400 both rank 2. The draw and the slow early pace are the ugly parts, but the finishing ability is real.
2. Grafology (No.8) — $5.00 / $1.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.2% | Place: 61.3% | Value: 1.06x
Why A real chance — but at $1.75 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Harriet (No.9) — $10.00 / $2.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.0% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 1.20x
Why Narromine 1600m winner last start, and Harriet has a strong sectional for the time rank. It's the horse that puts pressure on Roses Imminente at the finish.

Roughie: Autumn Heir (No.3) — $11.00 / $2.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.4% | Place: 33.6% | Value: 0.93x
Why Has a Soft 9:2-1-0 record and two third placings at Newcastle and Beaumont over 1200m. Last start was an 11th at Port Macquarie 1800m with interference, which is a real excuse. The path is the slow pace turning into a sprint at the top of the straight.

Race 4 – Hunter Valley Premium Meats Bowman Sprint

Race type: Open, 900m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, and No Statement from barrier 3 is the only leader on the map. Saratoga Power, Speck, Lighthouse Lass and Runranirun all sit close enough to pressure it, but the forward runners are the ones who want this shape. Who Goes There from barrier 9 and Lighthouse Lass from barrier 10 are both wide and have to work to cross. Super Sioux needs cover from barrier 8. The shape suits the forward runners, and Runranirun sits handy from barrier 2 with the shape working in its favour.
Punty read: Runranirun is the bet. Rosehill 900m winner last start, with Ben Looker's jockey strike rate at this track 12.7% (1128/8892) and a combo with the trainer that runs at 37.5% (9/24). The sectionals are L400 rank 3 and time fastest, which is the right mix for a sprint with genuine pace. Lighthouse Lass and Speck are the danger; Lighthouse Lass comes back after 128 days off with its 1st-up record of 3:1-1-0, and the market has cut it from $6.00 to $4.80.

Top 3 + Roughie ($9.00 pool)

1. Runranirun (No.7) — $2.05 / $1.13
Bet $9.00 Win, return $18.45
Prob 27.2% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.56x
Why Rosehill 900m winner last start, Soft 4:2-1-1, and a 1st-up record of 3:2-1-0 says it's a horse that shows up fresh. The genuine pace suits it sitting handy.
2. Lighthouse Lass (No.6) — $4.80 / $1.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.7% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.90x
Why A real chance — but at $1.70 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Speck (No.4) — $8.00 / $2.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.7% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.94x
Why Soft 12:4-2-0 is the best soft record in the field and it's 2kg down from last start. Drifting from $5.50 to $7.00, so the market isn't convinced, but the weight drop is the reason it's in the top three.

Roughie: Shihab (No.1) — $9.50 / $2.55
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.7% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.92x
Why Port Macquarie 1000m winner last start, and the tongue tie comes off again today. The market has come in from $13.00 to $9.50, which tells me people are paying attention. It's the sharpest roughie in the race if the pace leaves the leader with nothing left.

Race 5 – Two Rivers Wines Country Boosted Mdn Hcp

Race type: Maiden, 1280m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, and Don't Tell Harry from barrier 5 is the most likely to find the front, with Morpeth and Thirty Degrees pressing it. Morpeth is drawn wide from barrier 10 and has to work to cross. Bossy Sheila, Irish Accolade and Bigbetterbest all need cover from the back. The shape suits the forward runners, and Nearest from barrier 7 comes from the back with the shape reading in its favour on the numbers.
Punty read: Nearest is the bet and it's the one with the fastest last 400m on the card. Career 3: 0-0-0 is not pretty, but three runs finishing 4th at Scone and Newcastle tell a story. Aaron Bullock is at the track with a 21.4% strike rate and the trainer, P Messara & L Gavranich, is in the form that matters. Vaguely Red and Bossy Sheila are the dangers, and Don't Tell Harry's gear changes today (blinkers back on, visors off) are worth a second look.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

1. Nearest (No.1) — $2.25 / $1.25
Bet $13.00 Win, return $29.25
Prob 31.8% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.72x
Why Fastest last 400m on the card and the Bullock combo carries a 41% record (84/205). Three finishes of 4th in its last three starts show it's knocking on the door.
2. Vaguely Red (No.3) — $4.50 / $1.72
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.3% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.78x
Why A real chance — but at $1.72 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Bossy Sheila (No.4) — $4.60 / $1.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.3% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.75x
Why Muswellbrook 800m 2nd last start and Wellington 1100m 3rd, so it's a horse that finishes. Grant Buckley's jockey strike rate is steady at 8.8% at this track.

Roughie: Irish Accolade (No.7) — $13.00 / $3.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.5% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 0.71x
Why Career 50: 0-5-4 with a Soft 22:0-2-2 record, so it's a horse that gets close without winning. Scone 1400m 3rd last start. If the field gets strung out at the 1280m trip, it's the one to hit the frame.

Race 6 – The Chop Shop Butchery Mdn Plate

Race type: Maiden, 1000m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, and Yasena from barrier 10 is the only leader on the map, uncontested. Sasqua from barrier 7, Toke from barrier 12 and Doralee from barrier 4 all sit close enough to press it, and Elska and Tickelova are the others pressing the front. Toke and Elska are drawn wide and have to work to cross. Dream A Little from barrier 11 needs cover. The shape suits the forward runners. Doralee sits handy from barrier 4 and the shape helps it.
Punty read: Doralee is the bet, at $3.10 with the market firming it from $3.50. Career 11: 0-6-1 with 0 wins, six seconds and a third, which is a horse that finishes near the finish post. First-up 5:0-4-0 and distance 5:0-4-0 are the best records in the race. Cross-over nose band is off for the first time today. Tickelova and Sasqua are the danger, Tickelova with its 27.8% combo record with the trainer K A Lees.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Doralee (No.5) — $3.10 / $1.52
Bet $15.00 Each Way ($7.50W + $7.50P), collects $34.65 if it wins ($23.25 win + $11.40 place), $11.40 if it only places
Prob 25.9% | Place: 55.2% | Value: 0.80x
Why Six seconds from 11 starts is the best record of any runner in the race for the finishing spot, and the genuine pace sets the race up for a horse that sits handy and runs on.
2. Tickelova (No.11) — $2.70 / $1.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.4% | Place: 58.3% | Value: 0.58x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Sasqua (No.2) — $7.00 / $2.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.92x
Why Hawkesbury 800m 2nd last start and a 1st-up record of 1:0-0-1. It's a horse that wants the genuine pace to run at and it's the danger in the front half.

Roughie: Elska (No.6) — $12.00 / $3.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.3% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 0.75x
Why Muswellbrook 1000m 2nd two starts back and Soft 3:0-1-0. The shape is against it on the numbers, so the path is a genuine pace collapse at the front. Drawn wide from barrier 13 so it's a long ride.

Race 7 – All Seasons Irrigation (Bm58)

Race type: Benchmark 58, 1000m
Map & tempo: Hot pace, with three runners wanting to lead: Mr Cornstar from barrier 12, Bally Isle from barrier 6 and Ken'ker from barrier 5. Diva Rouge from barrier 13 and Mr Cornstar are both drawn wide and have to work to cross. Magic Storm and He'sthechief need cover. The shape suits the forward runners and hurts Audit, Lily Bobtail, He'sthechief and City Gold Speed. City Gold Speed sits midfield from barrier 3 and the shape is against it, so the form has to do the heavy lifting.
Punty read: City Gold Speed is the bet. Career 22: 1-3-7 is the record of a horse that runs in the money, and its last start was a 6th at Muswellbrook 1000m. Its sectional for the last 600m is the fastest in the race, so if the hot pace sets up a finish, this one can run late. The market has backed it in from $7.00 to $5.50. Warning on weight: 0 wins from 3 at 58-58kg. Diva Rouge and Farnciful are the danger, with Audit the roughie to watch if the speed burns out.

Top 3 + Roughie ($7.00 pool)

1. City Gold Speed (No.14) — $5.50 / $2.15
Bet $7.00 Win, return $38.50
Prob 14.3% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.79x
Why Fastest last 600m on the card and the market has backed it from $7.00 to $5.50. Its record in the places is solid, and the hot pace is a set-up for a horse coming late.
2. Diva Rouge (No.2) — $6.00 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.8% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.71x
Why A real chance — but at $2.15 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Farnciful (No.5) — $6.50 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.5% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 0.75x
Why Beaumont 800m 5th last start and a 3rd at Newcastle 800m with a L400 rank 2. It's a horse that lives in the top half and the hot pace suits a late runner.

Roughie: Audit (No.1) — $11.00 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.7% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 1.07x
Why Blinkers go on again and the tongue tie is on for the first time today. It was 9th at Randwick 1400m with a slow start as its excuse. If the leaders burn out in a hot pace, the midfield gets the trail and Audit is the one to pick off the stragglers.

SEQUENCE LANES

QUADDIE (R4-R7)

Smart: 7,6,4 / 1,3 / 5,11,2 / 14,2,5,6 (72 combos x $0.3472 = $25.00) -- 34.7% flexi
Punty's take: Race 5 is the tight leg with Nearest and Vaguely Red, and the other three legs are wide open with the Race 7 finish a real chaos bunch. This is a high-risk ticket that runs 72 combos across four legs, with 34.7% flexi sitting above the 30% minimum. Short-priced winners rarely pay, so the ticket's payout depends on a longshot in Race 7 or a surprise in Race 6, and it's an entertainment play with real upside.

NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK

1 - Blinkers off, price collapse
Arctic Legend (No.5, Race 4) has its blinkers removed today for the second time, and the market has come in from $9.00 to $6.50. Watch whether the money holds, because a horse that's been stripped of blinkers and backed is the one to keep an eye on.
2 - Yet to win on soft
Pomelo Chamomile (No.8, Race 1) is 0 wins from 4 on soft, with 2 seconds and a third. Its last start was an 11th at Illawarra Grange with interference on the record, so the bounce-back is the story.
3 - Stable one-two in Race 1
K A Lees has two runners in Race 1 in Pomelo Chamomile and Kuldar, so the stable has a chance to make the race look like its own private gallop, and K A Lees has four runners on the card in total.

FINAL WORD FROM THE RATBAG REPORT

Muswellbrook has speed in the right places and bankers where you'd expect, so don't go looking for a miracle. Back the Big 3, respect the Quaddie and keep your head when the chaos race comes round. See you at the rail, you beautiful ratbags.
