Punty's Early Mail
For all of Punty's tips for Wingatui, head to https://punty.ai/tips/wingatui-2026-11-03
Rightio Ticket Munchers, eleven races, a Soft 5 track, and a card that rewards anyone who can count to three. Smiling Eyes is the banker everybody will want to talk about, the speed is spread across a few races, and the back half of the day has enough chaos to make grown punters cry into their pies. Grab a coffee, read the map, and don't chase.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Wingatui, 1200m to 2200m card
Rail: True (no rail position given in the data)
Official going: Soft 5
Weather: Fine
Early lane guess: unknown pre-race, watch the first two
Tempo profile: Race 2 is a slow-pace staying race, Races 1, 3, 5 and 11 are moderate, and Races 4, 6, 9 and 10 are genuine. Races 7 and 8 are hot pace sprints where the speed fights itself to a standstill. Rain risk is flagged at 58%+ for the later races, so keep an eye on the going.
Jockeys to follow:
Tom Wigram: 10 rides today, including Smiling Eyes in Race 2, the shortest price on the card.
Triston Moodley: 10 rides today, including Go Pro in Race 1 and Loose Sally's ride in Race 9.
Ashlee Strawbridge: 9 rides today, including She's A Filly in Race 1 and No Party in Race 8.
Stables to respect:
B & S Anderton (18 runners): the biggest operation on the card, spread across six races, with Golden Spirit in Race 11 and No Party in Race 8 the ones to note.
R C Dennis (15 runners): Smiling Eyes in Race 2, Sir Sterling in Race 9 and Santita in Race 10 give them a real spread of chances.
Terry Kennedy (11 runners): Shes No Pie Eater is back after 243 days in Race 3, and Hollyhockaroo lines up in Race 8.
Punty's take: The speed map is the story today. Race 2 is the only true slow-pace staying race, and it is also where the favourite sits. Smiling Eyes has the form, the class and the market behind him, and the pace in that race is set up to let a handy horse settle and pounce. Races 7 and 8 are the chaos races. Five leaders in the 1200m Benchmark 65 and three in the 1200m Benchmark 75 mean somebody gets cooked early, and the back of the field will be sniffing around. Those are the races where I'd rather have a roughie in the back than a favourite on the speed.
Race 9 looks like the banker race for Loose Sally on paper, but she's been away 191 days and that's a question mark I can't wave away. Race 10 has a single leader in Caffeinated, which tells me the Genuine label is real, and the Ocean Heart and Santita form is worth a look. Race 11 is the other moderate-pace race where Golden Spirit could sit on the speed if nobody else wants the lead. The bloke who gets that run rides the favourite's shoes.
What it means for you: Be aggressive in Race 1 with Go Pro, that one has the best shape and the best numbers on the board. Race 2 is the protect race: Smiling Eyes is the only staked runner and the rest of the card is a maze of no-bets. Keep the stakes small in Races 3 to 11 because there are no staked selections there today. Watch the first two in each race, watch the rain, and don't go looking for a quaddie that the form doesn't back.
Race 1 – Otago Painting Solutions Mdn
Race type: Maiden, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace on paper, but nobody maps to lead and Fast Like Thunder (barrier 8), Jot Down (barrier 2) and She's A Filly (barrier 9) all want the front. Fast Like Thunder and She's A Filly both have to work from wide to cross, which is the kind of thing that wears a horse down. Go Pro sits midfield from barrier 1, inside the speed, so he can ride the scramble without being pinned out wide.
Punty read: Go Pro is my bet here and the one I'd be most comfortable defending. He's the top of the rankings, drawn barrier 1, and Triston Moodley has a strong record at this track (11.8% from 1302 rides at Wingatui). His last start was a 2nd at Ashburton over 1600m, and his 7:0-2-1 record at this distance says the trip suits. Autumn Breeze has the class and the tempo of a horse that closes, but the Ashburton and Wingatui excuses are a bit messy. She's A Filly has to carry her wide draw into the race and that is a hard job in a maiden. Starvinos is the roughie, and if the front-runners cook each other he's the one to be sitting at the finish.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. Go Pro (No.3) — $3.60 / $1.52
Bet $13.00 Win, return $46.80
Prob 25.7% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.93x Steady since tip
Why Barrier 1 and a midfield sit gives him the cleanest run of the top three, and his 2nd at Ashburton over 1600m last start shows he's competitive at this trip. The trainer and jockey combo has done good work together at this track.
2. She's A Filly (No.6) — $4.80 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.5% | Place: 45.6% | Value: 0.79x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.65 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Autumn Breeze (No.1) — $4.20 / $1.55
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.4% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.69x Steady since tip
Why She's been a bit unlucky in the excuses book, bumped at Ashburton and slow out at Wingatui. Barrier 4 gives her a shot, but the back position means she needs the front pair to go hard.
Roughie: Starvinos (No.4) — $9.50 / $2.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.0% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 0.67x Steady since tip
Why Midfield from barrier 5 with a 2.2km run last start in the excuses book, so a reasonable trip is on the cards. If the front pair blows up and the favourite can't find the run, he's the one who could sneak in.
Race 2 – Nellies Wine Bar & Restaurant (Bm75)
Race type: Benchmark 75, 2200m
Map & tempo: Slow pace. Flamboyance (barrier 3) is the only one likely to find the front, so nobody is going to be pushed along. Illusionist (barrier 6) and Frosbie (barrier 7) are drawn wide and need cover or luck, so the race will be run to suit a horse that can sit close and finish.
Punty read: Smiling Eyes is the bet and the banker of the day. He is top of the rankings by a mile, his 2nd at Ashburton over 2200m last start was a 1st, and Tom Wigram has a 50% combo strike rate with him at Wingatui. Ten kilos up from last start is the only blemish, and the data says he goes best at lighter weights, but the rest of the field is not close. Sight To See is the one who can cause an upset if the slow pace suits his closing kick. Kiwi Magic has the class but the race needs everything to go right for him.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Smiling Eyes (No.1) — $1.70 / $1.17
Bet $15.00 Win, return $25.50
Prob 41.2% | Place: 54.1% | Value: 0.70x Steady since tip
Why He's the best horse in the field on every line that matters: form, track, distance and the Tom Wigram and R C Dennis combination. Short price, but he's the one I'm happy to put money on.
2. Sight To See (No.2) — $6.00 / $2.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.3% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 1.04x Steady since tip
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Kiwi Magic (No.4) — $5.50 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.6% | Place: 29.3% | Value: 0.80x Steady since tip
Why Class in the record and a 3rd at Ashburton over 2200m last start. Needs the race to be run in the right order and a bit of luck through the field.
Roughie: Frosbie (No.7) — $23.00 / $5.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 3.3% | Place: 9.8% | Value: 0.76x Steady since tip
Why Wide draw and a backmarker in a slow-pace race is a long way to come, and his form at this trip is light. He's a roughie only if the field ends up in a bunch and somebody swoops late.
Race 3 – Positive Signs + Print Mdn
Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with two leaders in Shes No Pie Eater (barrier 1) and Iceland Poppy (barrier 12). Iceland Poppy is drawn wide and will have to work across to get to the front, so the speed battle is not a sure thing. Smashing Fashion (barrier 14) is the back-half runner who needs cover.
Punty read: No staked selection in this race, so I'm watching it. Shes No Pie Eater is the one who will get the front for free if Iceland Poppy can't cross, but she's been off 243 days and I'm not paying for that. Letschat and By A Cuddle look the most dangerous in the midfield.
Top 3 + Roughie: Watch only. No staked selections in this race.
Race 4 – Otago Farm Machinery Mdn
Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Admiralty (barrier 7) the only leader on the map, but the nearest pressure comes from Batu (barrier 2), Leica Ace (barrier 3) and Misty Blue (barrier 12), who is drawn wide. If Admiralty goes out and sets a genuine tempo, the pressure from inside could make the front a tough place to hold.
Punty read: No staked selection in this race, so I'm watching it. Admiralty is the one on the speed, but his last two starts had medical or physical excuses and I can't see him being fit enough to hold it up for a whole race. Batu and Leica Ace are the ones I'd be most interested in if the leader gets caught.
Top 3 + Roughie: Watch only. No staked selections in this race.
Race 5 – Otago Daily Times (Bm65)
Race type: Benchmark 65, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with two leaders in Champagne Wishes (barrier 14, wide) and Jikon (barrier 1). The inside barrier gives Jikon the edge in any fight for the front, while Champagne Wishes has to work across. Brutal Riff (barrier 6) sits on the speed, so he's well placed to pick up the pieces.
Punty read: No staked selection in this race, so I'm watching it. Brutal Riff is the one with the best run on paper and his last start was a 2nd at Ashburton over 1200m. Ocean Boulevard and Yoo Hoo Joy are the ones who need the race to come to them, and Wyndstruck from the back is the danger if the pace is strong.
Top 3 + Roughie: Watch only. No staked selections in this race.
Race 6 – Otago Engineering (Bm65)
Race type: Benchmark 65, 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Gibby Pay Cheque (barrier 3) the only leader on the map. Nearest pressure comes from The Cool One, Pontoon, Jail Bird, Miss Pearl, Dink and Citala, so the front will be contested by the time they settle. Several back-half runners, including Rekindle and Eternal Light, are drawn wide and need cover.
Punty read: No staked selection in this race, so I'm watching it. Gibby Pay Cheque is the one who gets the lead without a fight, and his last start was a 1st at Phar Lap Raceway over 1200m. Eternal Light won at Phar Lap Raceway over 1200m last start, so he's the one to watch in the midfield. Show Pony is 10kg up from last start, which the data says suits lighter weights, so I'm not convinced.
Top 3 + Roughie: Watch only. No staked selections in this race.
Race 7 – KB Contractors (Bm65)
Race type: Benchmark 65, 1200m
Map & tempo: Hot pace with five leaders: Grove Street (barrier 7), Into The Circle (barrier 4), Ace App (barrier 10), Miss Harley Quinn (barrier 8) and Stout (barrier 11). That's a lot of speed fighting for the same piece of track. Sheza Quetee (barrier 14) sits on the speed out wide, and Cockahoop (barrier 15) and Brigit (barrier 16) are drawn wide at the back and will need cover to make up ground.
Punty read: No staked selection in this race, so I'm watching it. Sheza Quetee won at Gore over 1200m last start and is the one on the speed out wide with a clean run to sit. Grove Street and Ace App are the early leaders most likely to get cooked, and that opens the door for the back of the field.
Top 3 + Roughie: Watch only. No staked selections in this race.
Race 8 – Property Brokers (Bm75)
Race type: Benchmark 75, 1200m
Map & tempo: Hot pace with three leaders: Magnastar (barrier 7), Miss Starlight (barrier 5) and American Cheval (barrier 11). No Party (barrier 14) and Abit Sassy (barrier 13) are drawn wide and will have to work to cross. The early speed battle is real, and the wide runners will need to find their way into the race.
Punty read: No staked selection in this race, so I'm watching it. Miss Starlight is the one with the front-running record and the trip to go with it, and Magnastar is the one most likely to fight her for it. No Party has a strong record at the distance but he's drawn wide and 247 days off, which makes him a question mark.
Top 3 + Roughie: Watch only. No staked selections in this race.
Race 9 – Grand Casino Hcp
Race type: Open, 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Rochello (barrier 7) the only leader on the map. Pressure is expected from Mayor Of Norwood (barrier 9), Sir Sterling (barrier 5), Capo Dell Impero (barrier 10) and Richard Stomper (barrier 4). Loose Sally (barrier 12) and Desert Mystic (barrier 13) are drawn wide and need cover.
Punty read: No staked selection in this race, so I'm watching it. Loose Sally has the record to win this race, with 6 wins from 14 starts and a 5:0-0-1 record at Wingatui, but she's been off 191 days and has to find her way from a wide gate. Sir Sterling is the one on the speed who might be ready to make the most of a genuine tempo. Mayor Of Norwood has good form at this track and I'd be interested if the pace is right.
Top 3 + Roughie: Watch only. No staked selections in this race.
Race 10 – More FM (Bm75)
Race type: Benchmark 75, 1600m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Caffeinated (barrier 10) the only leader on the map. The Diviner (barrier 12) and Mamaea (barrier 8) are the ones who will sit handy, and The Ocean Heart (barrier 7) is midfield. Cherryville (barrier 11), Timetoplaythegame (barrier 13) and Beaver Fever (barrier 14) need cover from the back.
Punty read: No staked selection in this race, so I'm watching it. Santita is the one I want to watch. She's a Wingatui winner over 1400m last start and a 1st at Riccarton Park over 1600m, so the trip is no worry for her. The Ocean Heart is midfield with a good closing record at Wingatui and is worth a look if the pace is as genuine as the map suggests.
Top 3 + Roughie: Watch only. No staked selections in this race.
Race 11 – HC Flooring Mdn
Race type: Maiden, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with Golden Spirit (barrier 4) the most likely to find the front, backed by Swoomee Swan (barrier 9) and Cool Cat (barrier 10), who is drawn wide. The Boss Girls (barrier 12) is also wide and will need a bit of luck. Clancy (barrier 11) and La Reina (barrier 13) are the back-half runners who need cover.
Punty read: No staked selection in this race, so I'm watching it. Golden Spirit has the form and a 3rd at Wingatui over 1400m, so he's the one who can sit on the speed if nobody else wants the lead. Swoomee Swan is the one who can run him down if the leader stops. Cool Cat's 2nd at Gore over 1335m last start is worth noting, and he's the one wide enough to be a problem.
Top 3 + Roughie: Watch only. No staked selections in this race.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - Weight jump for the favourite
Smiling Eyes is 10kg up from last start, and the data says he goes best at lighter weights. He's still the banker, but the weight jump is the one thing I'd want to see in the betting.
2 - Last-start excuses on file
Golden Spirit has a bumped and hampered excuse on file at Ascot Park over 1400m. He's the one to look at in Race 11 if the midfield gets tight.
3 - Race 7 cookers
Five leaders in a 1200m Benchmark 65 is the kind of setup that makes grown punters cry into their pies. Somebody is going to go out too hard, and I'd rather be on the one who waits.
FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY
Eleven races, one banker, and plenty of ways to lose your shirt on a Soft 5 track. Back the horses that have earned it, leave the rest for the grubs who like to gamble on chaos, and keep your mate with the sensible stake in the chair.
