Rightio Ticket Munchers, Fannie Bay on a Good track with a fine day and a 1100m to 1600m card, and there's not much natural speed in this meeting, so read the shapes before you read the form guide.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Fannie Bay, 1100m to 1600m card
Rail: True (no rail position in the data)
Official going: Good (Nil last 24 hours, 23mm last 7 days)
Weather: Fine, live gusts 14.8km/h. No wind direction in the data.
Early lane guess: unknown pre-race, watch the first two
Tempo profile: Slow in Race 1, Race 3 and Race 6. Moderate in Race 2, Race 4 and Race 5. No race has a true lone speed horse, so the fights are for the front, not a runaway.
Jockeys to follow:
Jarrod Todd (6): rides Biden Time in Race 6, Field Of Flutes in Race 2 and Pierre Le Quill in Race 3, so he's in the thick of the staked race plans.
Richard Bensley (6): rides Struck Gold in Race 2 and Be Brief in Race 3, two of the day's biggest prices on the board.
Billy Cray (6): rides Chewing Gum in Race 4 and Steamy Mist in Race 5, and both are on the speed in fields that want the front.
Stables to respect:
G Clarke (10 runners): nine of the ten runners are on the card in different spots, including Biden Time in Race 6 and Tears Are Flowing in Race 4. The biggest squad on the day.
Tommy Logan (8 runners): Steamy Mist and Jumping Power Two in Race 5 both come from this yard, and Mods is a danger in Race 1.
Philip Cole (5 runners): Mistifyzou and Sassy Abbey are in the Race 4 sprint, and Bit Tired Actually is a long shot in Race 1.
Punty's take: Right, let's talk about where the speed actually is, because that's where this card gets interesting. Race 1 looks like a slow-motion race with Charlie Magic the likeliest to find the front from barrier 3, and nobody else in the field is built to take it off him. That leaves the midfielders, Tee Galleria and Tokyo Bandit, chasing a pace that won't be flogging anybody. Race 2 is where it gets spicy. Struck Gold from the inside gate and Field Of Flutes and Hennessy Lad all want the front, so there's a proper three-way fight in a moderate pace, and the horse that gets the best of it might cruise. Race 3 is the one with the cleanest shape on the day, Ask Your Mother from the rail and the pace on paper set up for her to sit on the speed, with Be Brief in the midfield getting the shape too.
Race 4 is a crowded little sprint where five horses are fighting for the front from barriers 1 to 12, and Cavern and Chewing Gum both sit midfield with the shape in their favour. Race 5 is the wide-open one, with Rivkin, King Akeed, Texture, Jumping Power Two and Steamy Mist all wanting the front, and Littlebourkestreet from barrier 9 is going to have to be smart. Race 6 is a slow pace over 1600m, with Biden Time from barrier 2 the likeliest to find the front and the shape helping him. Stables with numbers today are G Clarke and Tommy Logan, and the Chris Nash and Richard Bensley combo has a strong record together at this track.
What it means for you: Put your money where the shape is and keep the rest on a short leash. Race 3 and Race 6 are the ones I'd be happy to be aggressive on, with the speed map handing the advantage to the horses who want to sit handy. Race 2 and Race 5 are the ones to protect in, because there are too many on the speed for a clean run, and a bit of chaos at the front can change the complexion of the whole race. Race 1 is a bit of a lottery in a slow pace, so keep it tidy and let the each-way on Tee Galleria do the work. Banker races in this meeting are Race 3 and Race 6, chaos races are Race 2 and Race 5, and Race 4 sits in the middle. Value is around Biden Time, Littlebourkestreet and Cavern, all of whom are on the right side of the shape.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
These are the three bets the day leans on.
1 - Be Brief (Race 3, No.2) — $2.20
Why Blinkers on first time, the shape gives him a kick, and Richard Bensley and Chris Nash have combined six wins from 19 rides together, so he's the banker of the three.
2 - Struck Gold (Race 2, No.2) — $3.20
Why Drawn inside, on the speed in a moderate pace, and he's on a last-start win at Fannie Bay 1100m, so he's the horse I'd want at the front.
3 - Littlebourkestreet (Race 5, No.2) — $3.30
Why Gets the shape in a race that's going to be a shuffle at the front, and his Good record of 11 starts for 2 wins and 6 seconds says he lives on the stretch.
Multi (all three to win): $10 × 23.23 = $232.30
RACE-BY-RACE
Race 1 – Happy 40th Bedros Trobis Hcp
Race type: Handicap, 1300m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, and Charlie Magic from barrier 3 is the likeliest to find the front with nobody else built to take it off him. That leaves Tee Galleria sitting midfield from barrier 4, and the shape is against him, so he has to win it on class and his form at this track. Tokyo Bandit and Funnyifitwon from barriers 8 and 9 are the back-half runners who need cover or luck.
Punty read: Tee Galleria is the each-way bet and the reason is simple, he's been second, third and second in his last three starts, all at Fannie Bay, and he's the horse I trust to pick up a place even if the shape isn't his mate. Mods from barrier 1 is the danger, he won at Fannie Bay 1100m last start and his price is the one to keep an eye on. Pafitis is the one to watch if the front pair cooks each other early, and Funnyifitwon is the roughie if the pace sits soft and the back markers get home.
Top 3 + Roughie ($9.50 pool)
1. Tee Galleria (No.4) — $4.50 / $1.65
Bet $9.50 Each Way ($4.75W + $4.75P), collects $29.22 if it wins ($21.38 win + $7.84 place), $7.84 if it only places
Prob 17.4% | Place: 53.6% | Value: 0.78x Steady since tip
Why Placed in his last three starts at Fannie Bay, and he's been second and third at this track. The shape works against him, but he's the one who has been running on at the finish.
2. Mods (No.3) — $3.40 / $1.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.3% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.59x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Pafitis (No.7) — $4.80 / $1.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.71x Steady since tip
Why Ran third at Fannie Bay 1100m last start, and his Good form is consistent enough to keep him in the mix if the front pair burns out.
Roughie: Funnyifitwon (No.5) — $9.50 / $2.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.4% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 0.61x Steady since tip
Why If the pace stays slow and the backmarkers get the trail, she's the one that can swoop from barrier 9. Her last start was an 8th at Fannie Bay 1200m that she blamed on a slow start.
Race 2 – Chris Williams Jewellers Hcp
Race type: Handicap, 1300m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, and Struck Gold from barrier 2, Field Of Flutes from barrier 3 and Hennessy Lad from barrier 5 are all on the speed and all want the front. Struck Gold has the inside gate, so he gets first crack at it and the shape helps him. Stormfront and Gravina from barriers 6 and 7 are the back-half runners who need cover, and the shape works against them.
Punty read: Struck Gold is the bet, $11.00 win, and it's because he's got the inside, the shape and the form to go with it. He's a last-start winner at Fannie Bay 1100m and his Good record is strong. Hennessy Lad is the danger on a clean run from barrier 5, and Field Of Flutes is the one who could sit on the pace behind them and pounce.
Top 3 + Roughie ($11.00 pool)
1. Struck Gold (No.2) — $3.40 / $1.72
Bet $11.00 Win, return $37.40
Prob 31.0% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.05x Steady since tip
Why Inside gate, on the speed in a moderate pace, and his last start was a win at Fannie Bay 1100m. He's also two kilos lighter than his last run, which I like.
2. Hennessy Lad (No.6) — $3.80 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.6% | Place: 36.0% | Value: 0.78x Steady since tip
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Field Of Flutes (No.1) — $4.00 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.5% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.70x Steady since tip
Why Won his last start at Fannie Bay 1200m, and his Good form is solid enough to be a place chance if the front fight goes on too long.
Roughie: Gravina (No.5) — $16.00 / $4.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.5% | Place: 11.6% | Value: 0.71x Steady since tip
Why The roughie's path is a 57-start grinder with five wins, so it's a long shot that needs the front to fall apart and a late run from the back. Tongue tie is on again, so it's not a random add-on.
Race 3 – Top End Roofing Mdn Plate
Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, and Ask Your Mother from barrier 1 is the likeliest to find the front. Be Brief sits midfield from barrier 2 and the shape helps him, so he should have the cover he needs. Prince Of Sparta from barrier 8 and Opulent Oscar from barrier 7 are the back-half runners who need cover or luck.
Punty read: Be Brief is the bet, $15.00 win, because the shape is in his favour and his combo with Richard Bensley and Chris Nash is strong. Ask Your Mother from barrier 1 is the one who can take him on at the front, and Pierre Le Quill is the sit-and-wait danger with the sectional speed to run home. The price is short on Be Brief, so this is a clean win bet, not a plunge.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Be Brief (No.2) — $2.30 / $1.10
Bet $15.00 Win, return $34.50
Prob 32.7% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.75x Steady since tip
Why Blinkers on first time, midfield from barrier 2 with the shape helping, and Bensley with Chris Nash have a good combo record. He's the banker of the day in my book.
2. Ask Your Mother (No.1) — $3.50 / $1.32
Bet Tracked
Prob 27.5% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.96x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.32 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Pierre Le Quill (No.5) — $3.70 / $1.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.8% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.77x Steady since tip
Why Lugging bit on first time, and his sectional work is quick with the fastest L400 and time on the card. He's the one who can run home if the speed fight stalls.
Roughie: Macaverty (No.3) — $21.00 / $3.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 2.9% | Place: 17.8% | Value: 0.60x Steady since tip
Why If the front pair tire and the back markers get a run, Macaverty from barrier 4 can get home for a place. Two kilos up is the knock, but his last start was a 4th at Fannie Bay 1300m.
Race 4 – Pointsbet Pull 'Em Hcp (C2)
Race type: Handicap, 1100m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, and Tears Are Flowing from barrier 1 is the likeliest to find the front with Bold Suitor from barrier 6 and Blitzwater from barrier 7 on the speed as well. Meet Me At The Bar from barrier 12 has to work to cross, and Mistifyzou from barrier 14 is in the same boat. Cavern sits midfield from barrier 3 and the shape helps him, along with Chewing Gum from barrier 2.
Punty read: Cavern is the each-way bet at $10.50, and the reason is he's the horse who gets the shape and the form with the market moving in his favour. He's come off a win at Fannie Bay 1100m and his Good record is strong. Chewing Gum is the danger, the blinkers came off first time and the sectionals show fast closing sectionals. Tears Are Flowing is the one who can lead, and Rising Water is the roughie.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Cavern (No.1) — $3.70 / $1.57
Bet $10.50 Each Way ($5.25W + $5.25P), collects $27.67 if it wins ($19.43 win + $8.24 place), $8.24 if it only places
Prob 22.4% | Place: 54.3% | Value: 0.83x Steady since tip
Why Midfield from barrier 3 with the shape in his favour, and the market has been firming from $6.00 to $3.60. He's a first-up winner in the record, and his last start was a win at Fannie Bay 1100m.
2. Chewing Gum (No.4) — $4.60 / $1.72
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.9% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.01x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Tears Are Flowing (No.2) — $4.60 / $1.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.6% | Place: 58.9% | Value: 0.86x Steady since tip
Why On the speed from barrier 1, and his Good record is 4 wins from 6 starts, so he's the horse who can go to the front and take a bit of pace out of the race.
Roughie: Rising Water (No.10) — $13.00 / $3.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.3% | Place: 24.1% | Value: 0.68x Steady since tip
Why On the speed from barrier 9, and he won his last start at Fannie Bay 1100m. The shape is against him, but if the front pair burns each other he can sit and run on.
Race 5 – Electrical Supply Solutions Hcp (70)
Race type: Handicap, 1100m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, and five runners want the front from barriers 1 to 7 (Texture, King Akeed, Steamy Mist, Jumping Power Two and Rivkin). Texture and King Akeed are on the advantaged side of the shape. Littlebourkestreet from barrier 9 is the one who has to run wide, and Alaa Plenty from barrier 8 is in the same boat.
Punty read: Littlebourkestreet is the bet at $10.50 win. He's a last-start second at Fannie Bay 1100m and he's got the best class record on the card at this track. Alaa Plenty is the danger if the midfield runners get a sit, and Steamy Mist is the one who could take the front if the speed fight stalls. Jumping Power Two is the roughie on a good Fannie Bay record.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Littlebourkestreet (No.2) — $3.40 / $1.50
Bet $10.50 Win, return $35.70
Prob 24.4% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.83x Steady since tip
Why Midfield from barrier 9 with the shape helping him, and his Good record is 11 starts for 2 wins and 6 seconds. He's up 4kg, which is a question, but he's been running on at the finish.
2. Alaa Plenty (No.6) — $5.00 / $1.82
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.6% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.98x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.82 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Steamy Mist (No.8) — $4.00 / $1.62
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.4% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.62x Steady since tip
Why On the speed from barrier 6 and a last-start win at Fannie Bay 1000m, so he's got the form to go with the shape.
Roughie: Jumping Power Two (No.7) — $10.00 / $2.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.5% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 0.65x Steady since tip
Why On the speed from barrier 5 with a Good record of 8 wins from 27, so if the front pair goes too hard he can take the sit and run home.
Race 6 – Jamie Dyer Plumbing Hcp (64)
Race type: Handicap, 1600m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, and Biden Time from barrier 2 is the likeliest to find the front. The shape helps him, and New Enterprise from barrier 1 is the other one who might get a run. Merimbula from barrier 10 and Sass from barrier 9 are the back-half runners who need cover or luck, and the shape doesn't do them many favours.
Punty read: Biden Time is the each-way bet at $13.00. He's a last-start winner at Fannie Bay 1600m and he's got the front-running spot, which is the best place to be in a slow pace. The weight warning is the concern, with no wins from 2 starts at 62kg. Ankle Rolex is the danger, the market has been steaming him from $7.00 into $4.40, and Villa Seventynine is the place chance from midfield.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. Biden Time (No.3) — $3.80 / $1.65
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P), collects $35.43 if it wins ($24.70 win + $10.73 place), $10.73 if it only places
Prob 22.7% | Place: 61.1% | Value: 0.86x Steady since tip
Why On the speed from barrier 2 in a slow pace, and his last start was a win at Fannie Bay 1600m. He's the one who gets the front and the trip.
2. Ankle Rolex (No.4) — $4.40 / $1.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.5% | Place: 54.4% | Value: 0.95x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Villa Seventynine (No.2) — $3.90 / $1.62
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.9% | Place: 48.9% | Value: 0.74x Steady since tip
Why Midfield from barrier 7, and his last start was a 2nd at Fannie Bay 1600m. He's been placed at the trip.
Roughie: Merimbula (No.5) — $12.00 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.0% | Place: 29.3% | Value: 0.84x Steady since tip
Why From barrier 10 he's got to come from a long way back, but he ran third at Fannie Bay 1600m last start and the fastest L600 and L400 on the card say he can finish.
SEQUENCE LANES
QUADDIE (R3-R6)
Smart: 2,1,5 / 2,1,4 / 2,6,8 / 3,4,2 (81 combos x $0.395 = $32.00) -- 39.5% flexi
Punty's take: Be Brief and Ask Your Mother keep leg one tight, but R4 and R6 are three-horse legs and R5 is the wide one with four. High risk, a real punt rather than a banker, and a $5 to $10 winner somewhere in the four races is what pays.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - Blinkers on first time for Be Brief
Be Brief has blinkers on first time and is 141 days off, with a 1st-up record of 1:0-0-0. Watch the market in the lead-up.
2 - Blinkers off first time for Chewing Gum
Chewing Gum's blinkers come off first time, and his 1st-up record is 4 starts, 1 win and 1 second. The 164 days off is the question.
3 - Gravina keeps turning up
Gravina has run 57 times for 5 wins and 8 seconds, with a tongue tie on again. He's the pub bore who never leaves the bar, so he's the roughie you'd have to be mad to ignore and mad to back.
FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY
Keep the stakes sensible, the mates close and the phone face down until the Race 3 jump. Shape wins races on a day like this, so watch who gets the front and who gets the trail.
