Punty's Early Mail
For all of Punty's tips for Canberra, head to https://punty.ai/tips/canberra-2026-11-03
Rightio Degenerates, Canberra is on a Good 4 with 3mm in the last 24 hours, seven races from 1000m to 2000m, and a card that will reward anyone who reads the speed properly. Overcast, a light breeze and a 40% rain chance later in the day, so keep one eye on the sky. Let's get into it.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Canberra, 1000m to 2000m card
Rail: True
Official going: Good 4 (3mm last 24hrs, 9mm last 7 days)
Weather: Overcast, gusts 11.1km/h. Rain risk 40%+ at 11:00, 17:00 and 23:00.
Early lane guess: unknown pre-race, watch the first two
Tempo profile: Moderate in Races 1 to 4, Genuine in Race 5, Slow in Races 6 and 7. Nobody is really scared to lead in the first four, so the front is up for grabs most of the afternoon.
Jockeys to follow:
Pierre Boudvillain: Seven rides on the card, and his Canberra strike rate is 14.3% (244/1703). He's on Prophet Time, Hellfire Henry, Deeply, Bengal, Soviet Storm, Dunna Runna and Miss Fennell's rival Miss Defy is a Boudvillain ride too, so he's got a hand in almost every race.
Glenn Cahill: Six rides, including Texas Open, Rose Aye and Our Lady Peace, so he's on two of my key races. His Canberra strike rate is only 7.8% (58/748), so it's the horse, not the rider, that has to carry it.
Quayde Krogh: Six rides at a 9.9% Canberra strike rate (360/3620), with Steffiewah and Don't Back Down among the rides. Quiet but steady.
Stables to respect:
G P Vella (5 runners): Beau Rock, Prophet Time, Deeply, Good Prize and Don't Back Down. Their Canberra trainer strike rate is 10.5% (266/2544), and Prophet Time is the one to watch.
Luke Pepper (5 runners): Pariah Time, Slater's Boy, Bengal, Morosini and Miss Defy. Pepper's Canberra strike rate is 15.1% (330/2182), which is handy for a stable with five chances.
Matthew Kelley (5 runners): Deepwater Artist, Stupendo, Our Lady Peace, Hellfighter and Boujee Gold. Kelley is flagged hot over the last 100 with a 15.0% strike rate, and Our Lady Peace is the one I'd respect most.
Punty's take: Race 1 to Race 4 is the speed battle, and it's mostly a sit-and-wait affair with nobody mapping to lead in the first. Race 2 is a Moderate pace with three horses fighting for the front, and Race 3 has six runners on the speed from a Class 2 field, which is why I want to see where Regor jumps from barrier 1. Race 5 is the one with a true leader, Mazemblard, and that puts the race shape in the hands of the chasers from the wide draws. Race 6 and Race 7 are where the back half comes alive. Slow paces in both races, with the back-markers helped and the leaders struggling to get the tempo up. I'm not getting carried away with the Quaddie because the back half of it is open, but the early legs are where the money goes.
What it means for you: Be aggressive in Race 1 and Race 4 where the speed is contested and the staked horses are in the right spots. Protect your bank in Race 6 and Race 7, where the Slow labels and the back-marker bias mean the race will likely pay for a late charge. Race 2 is the value race, with Top Pick and Slater's Boy the outsiders who could give you a fat return if the leaders collapse. Race 5 is a chalk race if Our Lady Peace does what the sectionals say, so don't go near the Quaddie unless you're comfortable with a short-priced leg.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
These are the three bets the day leans on.
1 - Pariah Time (Race 2, No.2) — $2.10
Why Fastest time sectional on the card in a race I'm not sure the shape is with him, and his Brodie Loy combo with Luke Pepper is solid. He's yet to win in seven, so I'm not pretending that's not there, but the market is backing him and I'm on board.
2 - Witch Of November (Race 1, No.4) — $2.60
Why Heavy money from $4.00 to $2.60 and the sectionals back it up, with the fastest last 600 and fastest overall time. Trainer N J Olive has the best strike rate in this race at Canberra, and the shape helps her.
3 - Our Lady Peace (Race 5, No.4) — $2.40
Why No wins from seven, I know, but three seconds and a third tell me this horse is always close. Fastest time sectional, and Kelley's barn is running hot. The Genuine pace is against it, which is why the price is short, but the class and the clock win it for me.
Multi (all three to win): $10 × 13.10 = $131.00
Race 1 – Capital Trophies & Sportswear
Race type: Benchmark 50, 1000m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace on paper and nobody maps to lead, so the front is open. Texas Open from barrier 1, Prophet Time from barrier 2 and Soho Sushi from barrier 4 are the likeliest to take it up. Witch Of November sits midfield from barrier 5 and the shape helps her, which is exactly the trip I want her on.
Punty read: Witch Of November is the bet, $15 on the nose, because the market has come for her from $4.00 to $2.60 and her sectionals are the cleanest on the card. She's only one win from six on good, so she's not a lock, but she has the finishing speed to pick off a tired front. Soho Sushi is the danger with the fastest last 400 metres and three Canberra 1000m runs of 2nd, 4th and 3rd. Only five runners and only two pay a place, which is why I'm keeping this one to a single win bet.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Witch Of November (No.4) — $2.60 / $1.45
Bet $15.00 Win, return $39.00
Prob 33.7% | Place: 59.4% | Value: 0.88x Steady since tip
Why Heavy support from $4.00 to $2.60 and the best sectional clock in the field. She's one from six on good, which keeps her honest, but the shape helps her and N J Olive is the strongest Canberra trainer in the race.
2. Soho Sushi (No.3) — $3.90 / $1.72
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.4% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.80x Steady since tip
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Prophet Time (No.5) — $5.20 / $2.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.6% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.86x Steady since tip
Why Pierre Boudvillain's combo with this horse is 30% (15/50) and Pierre's Canberra strike rate is 14.3%. Prophet Time has been running on pace at 1000m, but the last start was a 7th at Bombala, so he's a place chance rather than a win bet for me.
Roughie: Texas Open (No.1) — $5.00 / $2.05
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.9% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 0.80x Steady since tip
Why He's on pace from barrier 1 and three wins from 19 on good is a decent foundation. If the moderate tempo gets stuck and the front stays lazy, a barrier 1 horse on the speed can slip through unnoticed.
Race 2 – Seears Workwear Mdn Plate
Race type: Maiden, 1300m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with three horses likely to fight for the lead: Hellfire Henry from barrier 6, Pariah Time from barrier 5 and Reschs Milk from barrier 3. Hellfire Henry has to work across from the wide draw. Karlin from barrier 7 needs cover, and the shape helps the back half, so Pariah Time sitting on the speed is working uphill.
Punty read: Pariah Time is the bet, $15 win, because the fastest sectional time on the card is his and the market is firming from $2.40 to $2.10. He's yet to win in seven and the shape is against him, so this is a conviction bet on class and clock, not a comfortable one. Hellfire Henry is the danger with visors on for the first time, and Bella Manda is the one to watch: drifting from $6.00 to $8.50, but the back-marker is helped most by this shape.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Pariah Time (No.2) — $2.10 / place tote
Bet $15.00 Win, return $31.50
Prob 43.7% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.92x Steady since tip
Why Fastest time sectional and an L600 rank 2, which is the kind of finishing kick that wins maidens. Blinkers back on, and the Brodie Loy and Luke Pepper combo is 20.1% (35/174). He's yet to win in seven, and the shape is against him, so I'm backing the clock.
2. Hellfire Henry (No.1) — $4.00 / $1.82
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.0% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.72x Steady since tip
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Top Pick (No.6) — $6.40 / $2.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.6% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 1.00x Steady since tip
Why Back-marker helped by the shape, and Rebecca Bronett Prag's combo with him is 30% (3/10). L600 rank 3 and L400 rank 2 mean he finishes well if the front gets tired.
Roughie: Slater's Boy (No.3) — $19.00 / $4.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.1% | Place: 16.7% | Value: 0.78x Steady since tip
Why Winkers off for the first time, and he's drawn barrier 1 on the rail. If the leaders go hard early and the field collapses, a horse that comes from a midfield spot can run into the money.
Race 3 – Carpet One Hcp (C2)
Race type: Class 2, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with six horses mapped on the speed, so this one could get tactical. Regor from barrier 1 gets the first run at the front, with Divine Secrets from barrier 3 and Alabama Hussy from barrier 4 likely to press him. Miss Fennell has to work across from barrier 10. Capital Babe from barrier 8 and Sanzeno from barrier 9 need cover, and the shape hurts Capital Babe.
Punty read: Regor is the bet, $10.50 each way, because the shape helps him and he has the best draw on the speed. He's two wins from six, with a Dist 5:2-1-1 record, and the last two runs were a first at Nowra and a first at Albury. Divine Secrets is the danger at $2.45, two wins from two at Canberra and the shorter price, while Miss Fennell is the one from barrier 10 who needs everything to go right.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Regor (No.1) — $5.00 / $1.70
Bet $10.50 Each Way ($5.25W + $5.25P), collects $35.18 if it wins ($26.25 win + $8.93 place), $8.93 if it only places
Prob 25.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.25x Steady since tip
Why Barrier 1 on the speed in a race where the shape helps him, and his last two starts were both wins. Nick Heywood and Matthew Dale have a 22.8% combo (85/372), and his distance record is strong.
2. Divine Secrets (No.2) — $2.45 / $1.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 23.7% | Place: 61.5% | Value: 0.58x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Miss Fennell (No.3) — $5.20 / $1.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.8% | Place: 54.0% | Value: 0.77x Steady since tip
Why Two wins and three seconds from eight, with a Wagga 1000m second last start. Barrier 10 is a hard draw, but she's the one who can run a place if she gets a sit.
Roughie: Capital Babe (No.8) — $10.00 / $2.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.7% | Place: 35.0% | Value: 0.97x Steady since tip
Why The shape hurts her, so her path is a late charge if the front-runners cook themselves. One win from seven at Canberra and a Wagga 1200m third last start give her a finishing chance.
Race 4 – TAB Federal Road To The Chest Hcp
Race type: Open, 1300m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with two leaders, Rose Aye from barrier 7 and Luna Angel from barrier 2. Luna Angel has the inside run to the front, so the fight for the lead will be decided early. Bengal and Deepwater Artist from the wide draws have to work across, while My Last Hooray and Metallic Ruler from barriers 12 and 11 need cover. The shape helps Sir Franklin from barrier 1.
Punty read: Sir Franklin is the bet, $13 each way, because the shape helps him, he's on the speed from barrier 1 and the Pads (front) are on for the first time. He's four wins from 13 and his Good record is two seconds from four starts. Bengal is the danger: his last start was a 1st at Canberra 900m and he's a three-win horse from 23. Rose Aye is heavy money from $3.00 to $2.15, but she has to lead against Luna Angel, so the race could get messy.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. Sir Franklin (No.4) — $4.80 / $1.82
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P), collects $43.03 if it wins ($31.20 win + $11.83 place), $11.83 if it only places
Prob 24.0% | Place: 62.4% | Value: 1.15x Steady since tip
Why Barrier 1 on the speed with the shape in his favour, and the front-piece gear for the first time. He's a bit flat last start with a 7th at Warwick Farm beaten 3L, but the sectional and draw line up for him.
2. Bengal (No.7) — $5.50 / $1.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 23.1% | Place: 60.7% | Value: 1.27x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Rose Aye (No.6) — $2.15 / $1.22
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.5% | Place: 54.2% | Value: 0.40x Steady since tip
Why Glenn Cahill has her on the lead from barrier 7 and the market has been heavy. Her last start was a 10th at Randwick where the data flags a medical or physical issue, which gives her a bounce-back case, but she's 4kg up from last start.
Roughie: Deepwater Artist (No.8) — $11.00 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.1% | Place: 30.9% | Value: 0.78x Steady since tip
Why Barrier 9 with a wide draw, so he's got to make his own luck. If the early speed is hot and Deepwater can sit off and finish, the L600 rank 2 gives him a chance.
Race 5 – Maloney's Property Mdn Hcp
Race type: Maiden, 1000m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Mazemblard the only leader from barrier 6. Nearest pressure comes from Mayweather from barrier 8, Isle Of Wight from barrier 3, Soviet Storm from barrier 7 and Steffiewah from barrier 1. Mayweather and Soviet Storm are both drawn wide and have to work to cross. Our Lady Peace sits midfield from barrier 4, and the shape is against him, so he has to be the one who finishes it.
Punty read: Our Lady Peace is the bet, $15 win. He's no wins from seven but three seconds and a third, and his sectionals are fast: fastest time, L600 rank 2 and L400 rank 2. Matthew Kelley is running hot and Glenn Cahill is on, though Cahill's Canberra strike rate is only 7.8%. The shape is against him, so this is a bet on the clock. Soviet Storm is the danger, heavy from $6.00 to $4.80, with Pierre Boudvillain riding and on the speed from barrier 7. Mayweather is the one who got heavy support and gear change for ear muffs.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Our Lady Peace (No.4) — $2.45 / $1.22
Bet $15.00 Win, return $36.75
Prob 31.3% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.77x Steady since tip
Why Three seconds and a third from seven, and he's the one who closes on the clock. He's been spelled 123 days and the first-up record is 0 wins from two, so it's a jump of faith. Matthew Kelley's yard is running hot with a 15.0% strike rate.
2. Soviet Storm (No.6) — $4.80 / $1.72
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.4% | Place: 58.6% | Value: 0.98x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.72 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Mayweather (No.1) — $5.50 / $1.82
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.70x Steady since tip
Why Heavy money from $8.50 to $5.50 and ear muffs on for the first time. He's drawn wide from barrier 8 and has to work across, but he's a second-up type with a 1st at Randwick 1050m last start.
Roughie: The Force Awakens (No.10) — $11.00 / $2.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.4% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.82x Steady since tip
Why Firming from $13.00 to $11.00 with fastest L600 and fastest L400, and a 1st at Warwick Farm 813m last start. If the leaders are hot early, the sprint finishing burst is the path to a surprise.
Race 6 – Allinsure Plate (C1)
Race type: Class 1, 1600m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, and the shape suits the back half. Nutbush Dancer and Supido Secret are the most helped. The Hard Road from barrier 4 and Don't Back Down from barrier 3 are the likeliest to take up the front. Rapid Reigns from barrier 9, Fly The Wind from barrier 10 and Morosini from barrier 11 are drawn wide and need cover, and the shape hurts Fly The Wind.
Punty read: Fly The Wind is the bet, $13 win. The shape is against him, but his last start was a 3rd at Taree 1600m and the sectional clock is fast (fastest L400 and fastest time). Damon Budler is hot over the last 100 rides at 14.0%. He's yet to win in seven, so I'm not pretending this is a lock. The Hard Road is the danger, having won last start at Queanbeyan 1460m. Hellfighter has six seconds from 15 starts but no wins, so he's a placing type rather than a winner.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. Fly The Wind (No.8) — $3.60 / $1.60
Bet $13.00 Win, return $46.80
Prob 20.7% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.75x Steady since tip
Why Fastest L400 and fastest time sectional, and a 3rd at Taree 1600m last start. Damon Budler's rides are hot at 14.0% over the last 100. The shape is against him, but the clock is the strongest on the card in this race.
2. Hellfighter (No.5) — $5.50 / $2.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.87x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $2.00 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. The Hard Road (No.3) — $8.50 / $2.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.4% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.88x Steady since tip
Why Won last start at Queanbeyan 1460m, and his time sectional ranks second. He's on the speed from barrier 4, so he's the most likely to take up the lead in a slow race.
Roughie: Rapid Reigns (No.4) — $9.00 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.0% | Place: 31.8% | Value: 0.72x Steady since tip
Why Won last start at Canberra 1600m and has the trip. From barrier 9 he's a back-marker who needs the leaders to keep the tempo slow enough for him to get a clean run in the straight.
Race 7 – Harvey Norman Commercial (Bm60)
Race type: Benchmark 60, 2000m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, nobody mapped to lead or sit handy, and the shape is in favour of the back half with Miss Defy, Zippy Lion, Boujee Gold and Ever Was all helped. Pure Melody from barrier 1 is also at the back, which is the shape he's against. Snap Decision from barrier 8 and Spurline from barrier 10 are drawn wide and need cover.
Punty read: Pure Melody is the bet, $10.50 win, because he won last start at Canberra 2000m and the market has firmed from $4.00 to $3.50. The shape is against him, but a last-start win at this trip is the kind of evidence I'll back. Snap Decision is the danger, heavy support from $5.50 to $4.20 with a 3rd at Nowra 1600m last start. Spurline is the wide-draw winner with fastest L600 and L400.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Pure Melody (No.4) — $3.60 / $1.62
Bet $10.50 Win, return $37.80
Prob 20.1% | Place: 60.9% | Value: 0.72x Steady since tip
Why Won last start at Canberra 2000m and has a 1 win from 5 record on good. He's two kilos up from last start, but the distance is the key and he has the speed to hold his spot.
2. Snap Decision (No.2) — $4.20 / $1.72
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.6% | Place: 53.3% | Value: 0.82x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.72 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Spurline (No.3) — $8.00 / $2.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.3% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.98x Steady since tip
Why Fastest L600 and fastest L400, and a 2nd at Wagga 2000m last start. He's wide from barrier 10 and four kilos up from last start, so he's a finisher who needs luck in the run.
Roughie: Splendid Magnus (No.7) — $11.00 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.2% | Place: 29.3% | Value: 0.79x Steady since tip
Why Won last start at Nowra 1600m and Damon Budler with Natalie Jarvis is 10 from 31 together. Barrier 9 from the wide draws means a late run is the only path, but the trainer and jockey are a good combo.
SEQUENCE LANES
QUADDIE (R4–R7)
Smart: 4,7,6 / 4,6,1 / 8,5,3 / 4,2,3 (81 combos x $0.3086 = $25.00) -- 30.9% flexi
Punty's take: Race 4 and Race 5 are the tightest with Sir Franklin, Bengal and Rose Aye in the first leg and Our Lady Peace and Soviet Storm in the second. Race 6 and Race 7 are wide open with four runners each, so this is a high-risk ticket. The flexi sits at 33.3%, above the 30% floor, and I'd only play it if you're happy with a $32 spend on open races.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - Sir Franklin gets front pads for the first time
Pads (front) are ON for the first time for Sir Franklin in Race 4, and he's been on the speed from barrier 1. Watch the early run.
2 - Witch Of November's market has been heavy
Opened at $4.00 and now $2.60, one of the strongest moves on the card. I can't see a reason in the data beyond the trainer's 15% Canberra strike rate, so I'm going with the market.
3 - Race 1 has five runners and only two pay a place
A five-horse field means the place market is thin, which is why I'm keeping my Race 1 bet to a single win. Good luck finding a place saver that's worth the price.
FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY
Back Witch, Pariah and Our Lady Peace in the Big 3 and sleep easy if the first two go, because the third is a clock bet. Race 6 and Race 7 are the places to be sensible with your bank.
