Rightio Legends, Wangaratta is sitting on a Soft 5 with plenty of rain in the last week, and the speed is thin on the ground, so the first two races and the back end of the card are where the fun starts. Three of the six races look like they'll be run at a crawl, which means the horses that like to sit back are going to have their tails up, and the market is already pricing a couple of the favourites like they're bulletproof.

MEET SNAPSHOT

Track: Wangaratta, 1170m to 2000m card
Rail: True Entire Circuit
Official going: Soft 5 (7mm last 24 hours, 15mm last 7 days)
Weather: Fine, 1mm of rain since 9am, 1mm in the last hour, gusts 25.9km/h. Rain risk 40%+ at 08:00, 11:00, 14:00, 17:00, 20:00 and 23:00.
Early lane guess: unknown pre-race, watch the first two
Tempo profile: Genuine pace in Races 1, 5 and 6, Slow pace in Races 2, 3 and 4. Only Race 1 has a true lone leader on the card, with Naval Command uncontested. Race 5 has Barrett Reef on the lead but plenty of pressure from the inside.
Jockeys to follow:
Jake Duffy: six rides today, including Ashen Knight in Race 2 and Prestige Geoffrey in Race 4, so he is in the thick of the action across the card.
Logan McNeil: six rides, with Frosted Amber in Race 1, Mirraway in Race 2 and American Russ in Race 5 all worth a look.
Cory Parish: five rides, and he's riding Riverlea Prince in Race 2, Give Some Lip in Race 4 and Densetsu in Race 6, which is a big chunk of my staked picks.
Stables to respect:
C J Davis (4 runners): Four in the mix across Races 2, 4 and 6, with Blonde Suspect the likeliest to find the front in Race 4 at $34.00.
J E & C Ledger (4 runners): Acroman, Astatine and Graceful Dance in Race 1 plus Captain Barbossa in Race 4, so they'll be trying to make a splash in the maiden.
Matt Jenkins (3 runners): Prestige Geoffrey is 1 win from 10 starts and has a 2nd-up record of 2:1-0-0, which makes him a stable to watch in Race 4.

Punty's take: Naval Command is the one horse on this card who is going to get a clear run to the front, and he's been backed in from $1.62 territory like the ring has already paid off the ticket. Race 1 looks like the banker race if you like a lone leader, but a $1.62 price doesn't pay much even if he wins. Race 2 and Race 3 are the chaos-lite pair with slow pace on paper, which means the hunters at the back are the ones to respect. Creusa is the strongest pick in Race 3 on all the numbers I've got, and she has been turning up in the right spots at the right prices. Race 4 is a proper mess with a slow pace and a field full of horses who want the trail, so you can't just lump on the short prices there. Race 5 and Race 6 are the blood and thunder of the day, and if you're hoping for some value in a wide-open field, that's where the good stuff is hiding.

What it means for you: Be aggressive in Race 3 with Creusa and in Race 1 if you want a ticket that doesn't ruin your weekend, but don't go mad with the short-priced stuff because the returns are thin. Protect your bankroll in Race 4 because the slow pace makes it a bunch of possible winners, not one standout. Race 5 and Race 6 are where you can afford to take a few more shots, especially with the each way angle on Barrett Reef and Densetsu. The value is in the places and the each way bets, not the boring win-only cheap prices, so play the spots that pay.

PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI

These are the three bets the day leans on.

1 - Creusa (Race 3, No.3) — $2.75
Why Her last start was a 2nd at Wangaratta over 2000m, she's got the sectional times to match, and she's a midfield runner in a slow race with the shape working for her.
2 - Naval Command (Race 1, No.4) — $1.62
Why He's the only leader in a maiden, he's got a tongue tie going on for the first time, and nobody in the field wants to hit the front with him.
3 - Give Some Lip (Race 4, No.3) — $3.20
Why He's been running on at the finish in the soft, the expected pace is working in his favour, and Cory Parish is riding hot over his last 100 rides.
Multi (all three to win): $10 × 14.26 = $142.60

Race 1 – A1 Tyrepower Wangaratta Mdn Plate

Race type: Maiden, 1300m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Naval Command (barrier 3) the only leader on the map, so he gets to go wherever he likes. Frosted Amber from barrier 1 is the only one with a chance to press him, and Royal Overture and Magic Royale are drawn wide enough that they have to work hard to get across. The expected pace suits the back half, which is good news for Brilliant Bull Ant from the back and bad news for the two drawn wide.
Punty read: Naval Command is my pick because he's the only horse in the race who gets to set the tempo without a fight, and a tongue tie going on for the first time is a sign his team is trying to sharpen him. He's the best bet in the race, and the question is whether he can hold on in a race that's set up for the back markers. Tallingas Diamond is the one who'll be sitting on his shoulder, and Brilliant Bull Ant from the back is the danger if the leader gets tired. Royal Overture and Magic Royale have too much to do from the wide draws to be trusted.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

1. Naval Command (No.4) — $1.65 / $1.15
Bet $13.00 Win, return $21.45
Prob 32.2% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.53x Steady since tip
Why He's an uncontested leader from barrier 3 in a maiden, he's run 3rd and 2nd in his last two starts, and the market has him as the one to beat. The shape is against him on paper, but he has the speed to make it count.
2. Tallingas Diamond (No.10) — $3.80 / $1.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.5% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.59x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.70 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Brilliant Bull Ant (No.1) — $5.00 / $2.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.4% | Place: 54.2% | Value: 0.62x Steady since tip
Why The shape suits him, and he's shown ability at the distance and on soft ground. If the pace is slow to get going, he'll be the one flying home.

Roughie: Astatine (No.3) — $21.00 / $3.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 3.5% | Place: 22.3% | Value: 0.73x Steady since tip
Why He's a $21.00 chance from barrier 3, with a closing sectional that could get him into the placings if the leader gets cooked. He's a true roughie with a long road to a win.

Race 2 – Dysons Group Companies Mdn Plate

Race type: Maiden, 1590m
Map & tempo: Slow pace with nobody on the map to lead, so Ashen Knight from barrier 11 is the most likely to take the front. Flashman and Titan's Soul are the ones who'll be helped by the expected pace, and Riverlea Prince from barrier 1 is the one who'll get a sit behind the fence. Mirraway and Woah Shamrock are drawn wide enough to need some luck.
Punty read: Riverlea Prince is my pick because the slow pace hands him the trail and he's been close on the soft before. Cory Parish is riding hot, which is a nice bonus for a horse who has the shape on his side. Amarillo Sky and Mirraway are the dangers, and Titan's Soul is the outsider who'll turn up if the speed collapses.

Top 3 + Roughie ($8.00 pool)

1. Riverlea Prince (No.4) — $3.90 / $1.65
Bet $8.00 Win, return $31.20
Prob 20.0% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.78x Steady since tip
Why He's been placed in some soft runs and he's got the trail with a slow pace on paper. Cory Parish is hot right now, and the expected pace suits his style.
2. Amarillo Sky (No.1) — $4.00 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.0% | Place: 50.2% | Value: 0.68x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.65 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Mirraway (No.6) — $4.50 / $1.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.9% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.67x Steady since tip
Why He's been running second at Wodonga and Wangaratta lately, and he's an on-pace type who can get on the speed in a slow race.

Roughie: Titan's Soul (No.5) — $11.00 / $2.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.7% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 0.74x Steady since tip
Why The expected pace helps him, the blinkers go on first time, and the visors come off, so he could be racing with his eyes open in a way he hasn't before.

Race 3 – McGregor Machinery Mdn Plate

Race type: Maiden, 2000m
Map & tempo: Slow pace with Dejavast from barrier 9 the likeliest to take the front, but he's drawn wide enough that he has to work to get there. The expected pace helps Spin Class, Jakbe Nimble and Lady Of Alsace from the back. Creusa from barrier 7 can sit midfield and let the race come to her.
Punty read: Creusa is my pick because she's the one in the field with the best form at the distance, a 2nd at Wangaratta over 2000m last start, and she has the sectional times to back it. The slow pace suits her, and she's a horse who can hit the line late. Vidaloa and Just Basil are the ones to keep an eye on, while Dejavast is the outsider who could give the favourite a fright from the outside.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

1. Creusa (No.3) — $2.80 / $1.30
Bet $13.00 Win, return $36.40
Prob 32.9% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.92x Steady since tip
Why Her last start was a 2nd at Wangaratta 2000m, and she's shown speed over the closing stages. The slow pace suits her and she's been running on in the right spots.
2. Vidaloa (No.7) — $3.40 / $1.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.6% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.53x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.50 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Just Basil (No.2) — $5.00 / $1.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.8% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.64x Steady since tip
Why Blinkers go on for the first time, he's got a sectional time rank of 2, and he's a backmarker who can make ground late in a slow race.

Roughie: Dejavast (No.4) — $11.00 / $2.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.6% | Place: 29.3% | Value: 0.84x Steady since tip
Why He's the one to pressure the leader from barrier 9, and bandages come off near hind for the first time. If he gets the lead, he's a bigger chance than the price suggests.

Race 4 – Ovens Ford Wangaratta (Bm52)

Race type: Benchmark 52, 2000m
Map & tempo: Slow pace with Blonde Suspect (barrier 10) the likeliest to lead, and he'll have to go wide to get there. Give Some Lip, Moral Turpitude, Whisper The Wind and Brookers Turbo are all backmarkers who the expected pace helps. Captain Barbossa and Opus from the outside need to be near the front late if they're going to matter.
Punty read: Give Some Lip is my pick because the slow pace suits a closer like him, he's got a strong sectional record at the 600 and 400, and Cory Parish is riding hot. He's been running on at the finish in soft conditions. Prestige Geoffrey and Moral Turpitude are the two most dangerous, and Whisper The Wind is the roughie who could steal a placing from the back.

Top 3 + Roughie ($5.50 pool)

1. Give Some Lip (No.3) — $3.30 / $1.52
Bet $5.50 Win, return $18.15
Prob 20.4% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.67x Steady since tip
Why He's got a strong closing record, the slow pace suits his style, and Cory Parish has been riding hot over the last 100 rides. He's the one to sit third or fourth and pounce.
2. Prestige Geoffrey (No.2) — $3.90 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.75x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.65 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Moral Turpitude (No.4) — $7.50 / $2.45
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.2% | Place: 34.4% | Value: 0.76x Steady since tip
Why He's drifted from $6.00 to $7.50 which tells me the market is cooling, but he's a backmarker in a slow race, and the shape is in his favour.

Roughie: Whisper The Wind (No.9) — $9.00 / $2.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.7% | Place: 28.0% | Value: 0.69x Steady since tip
Why He's a backmarker who can make up ground late in a slow race, and he's got a 1st-up record of 4:1-0-0. The weight form is a warning at 57-58kg, but if the race falls apart in the straight he can finish with a rush.

Race 5 – Sportsbet Feed (Bm52)

Race type: Benchmark 52, 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Barrett Reef (barrier 9) the only leader on the map, but American Russ, Apollo Sun, Sacred Ingot, Darken and Nicking Gracie all sit close enough to challenge. Barrett Reef is drawn wide so he has to work to get to the front. The expected pace favours It'swhatyoumakeit and Danerich Dan from the back, and Cumbrian Queen is hurt by the speed on paper.
Punty read: Barrett Reef is my pick, and the each way gives you the place cover if he can't win. He's the only leader on the card with a clear path to the lead, but the shape is against him and he'll be under pressure from the inside. American Russ is the danger who could take the lead off him, while Sacred Ingot and Danerich Dan are the ones to watch for a placing.

Top 3 + Roughie ($6.50 pool)

1. Barrett Reef (No.1) — $5.00 / $2.00
Bet $6.50 Each Way ($3.25W + $3.25P), collects $22.75 if it wins ($16.25 win + $6.50 place), $6.50 if it only places
Prob 16.5% | Place: 35.5% | Value: 0.83x Steady since tip
Why He's a leader who's been placed in a few races and he's got a time fastest rating. The shape is against him, but his speed means he doesn't have to wait around for the race to come to him.
2. American Russ (No.2) — $5.00 / $2.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.2% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 0.76x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Sacred Ingot (No.5) — $4.00 / $1.72
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.57x Steady since tip
Why He's a horse who's been placed on soft, and Cory Parish is in the saddle. He's a sit-and-pounce type who could land a placing if the leader tires.

Roughie: Darken (No.6) — $9.50 / $2.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.1% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.96x Steady since tip
Why He's been unlucky in some recent runs with traffic trouble, so if he gets a clear run from the on-pace spot he could be the one to pounce late.

Race 6 – Winsec Savings & Loans (Bm52)

Race type: Benchmark 52, 1170m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Zamora (barrier 4) the only leader, and there's plenty of pressure from Tasman Park (barrier 2), Enigmatise (barrier 7) and Montrock (barrier 11). Proprietary and Montrock are drawn wide and have to work to cross. Densetsu from barrier 6 sits midfield and the expected pace works for him, while Count Of Anjou and Deep Joy are caught wide.
Punty read: Densetsu is my pick because he's got a good run at the distance, he's been close in the soft and sits in a spot where the expected pace works for him. He's been running on at the finish and Cory Parish is in the saddle. Zamora is the one who'll set the tempo, while Belmasai is the danger from midfield. Deep Joy is the roughie who can find a run if the leader gets tired.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Densetsu (No.6) — $3.50 / $1.60
Bet $15.00 Each Way ($7.50W + $7.50P), collects $38.25 if it wins ($26.25 win + $12.00 place), $12.00 if it only places
Prob 19.4% | Place: 53.5% | Value: 0.68x Steady since tip
Why He's got a good record at the distance, a 2nd at Wodonga 1200m in his last start before the latest run, and the expected pace works for him from midfield. Cory Parish is the rider and the market has him firming.
2. Belmasai (No.5) — $7.50 / $2.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.0% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.98x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Zamora (No.4) — $2.60 / $1.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.3% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.32x Steady since tip
Why He's the only leader in the race and he's firming from $2.85 to $2.55. He's going to set the tempo, and if the pace is honest he'll be hard to run down.

Roughie: Deep Joy (No.10) — $10.00 / $2.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.5% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 0.95x Steady since tip
Why He's firming from $11.00 to $9.50, and he's a midfield runner with a 2nd-up record of 4:0-0-0 who can run on if the leader gets tired.

SEQUENCE LANES

QUADDIE (R3–R6)

Smart: 3,7 / 2,3,4 / 5,2,1,6 / 6,4,5,10 (96 combos x $0.3333 = $32.00) -- 33.3% flexi
Punty's take: Creusa and Vidaloa keep Race 3 tight, but Races 4 and 5 are wide open and Race 6 has a few horses who can win, so this is a 3-of-4-open ticket with high risk. Flexi sits at 33.3%, and short-priced winners rarely pay, so you need a $5 to $10 winner somewhere to make this worth the stake. This one is an entertainment-leaning ticket, so size it accordingly.

NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK

1 - Tongue tie goes on for Naval Command
Naval Command has a tongue tie going on for the first time, and he's the only leader on the card. Watch the market on him because a $1.62 price doesn't leave much room.
2 - Riverlea Prince's rider is hot
Cory Parish is J-HOT at 16.0% over his last 100 rides, and he's riding Riverlea Prince in Race 2. That's a nice stat for a horse who's been close on soft ground.
3 - Blonde Suspect is the fastest thing in Race 4
He's a $34.00 chance and the only one in the race with the speed rank to take the front. Every other horse in Race 4 is waiting for him to do the hard work, which is a bit like waiting for the bloke at the barbie to start the sausages.

FINAL WORD FROM THE RATBAG REPORT

Slow pace in Race 2, Race 3 and Race 4 means the horses that can find a bit of late zip are going to cop a bit of the spoils, so don't be scared to go a bit wider than you'd normally go. Wangaratta is a soft track, so keep the bankroll tight and the big ideas for the places.
