Punty's Early Mail
For all of Punty's tips for Armidale, head to https://punty.ai/tips/armidale-2026-10-24
Rightio Loose Units, Armidale is a Heavy 10 bog with 44mm down in the last week, six races, 44 runners and no scratchings, so the form students will be sorting the wheat from the chaff all afternoon. Grab a coffee, keep your wallet near your ankles, and let's get into it.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Armidale, 1100m to 1900m card
Rail: True
Official going: Heavy 10 (18mm last 24 hours, 44mm last 7 days)
Weather: Overcast, gusts 27.8km/h. Rain risk 50%+ at 11:00, 14:00 and 17:00
Early lane guess: Unknown pre-race, watch the first two
Tempo profile: Race 1 and Race 6 carry a genuine pace. Races 4 and 5 are slow, Race 2 and Race 3 are moderate. Race 2 and Race 3 have a disadvantaged runner flagged on the map, so the pace is not doing much for them.
Jockeys to follow:
Ben Looker: Four rides, including Hard Shell in Race 4, the short-priced banker of the day, and Bianco Nero in Race 5.
Daniel Smith: Four rides, including Nature Boy in Race 6, who is the pace-setter in the feature, and Doyle in Race 5, who carries a pace advantage on the map.
Jordie Thompson: Four rides, spread across Race 2, Race 3, Race 5 and Race 6, so he's in the thick of the action everywhere.
Stables to respect:
M N Howard (3 runners): Helen's Crown in Race 2, Carbrook in Race 3 and Our Bully in Race 4.
Ms L Selby (3 runners): Olufsen in Race 3, which is the Big 3 horse, plus Zou Big Boy and Nature Boy in Race 6.
Ms V McLennan (3 runners): Be Thy Name in Race 1, Gosling in Race 4 and Master Of Rewards in Race 5.
Punty's take: Heavy 10 at Armidale is a jungle, and the speed map tells the story. Race 1 has Be Thy Name as the only runner the map puts on the lead, so he'll be setting the tempo in a Genuine Pace maiden. Race 6 is the other genuine pace race, with Nature Boy on the lead and Big Short given the pace advantage, but Nature Boy also carries the pace disadvantage flag, so the leader's own pace is working against him. That is a riddle worth solving. Races 4 and 5 are slow, which is good news for the on-pace runners who can sit handy and quicken, and it's bad news for anyone who needs a fast tempo to get into the race.
Which races look like bankers? Race 4 is the closest thing to a banker, with Hard Shell at $1.90 and a decent gap to the next runner, although that price leaves no meat on the bone. Race 1 and Race 3 are the trios where the map and the market agree on a short list. Race 5 and Race 6 are the chaos races, with a 4-runner leg in each of the quaddie legs. The stables with the numbers are M N Howard, Ms L Selby and Ms V McLennan, each with three runners on the card, so watch which of their horses show up with the right gear.
What it means for you: Be aggressive in Race 1, where Platinum Card is the one I'm backing with a win bet. He's a backmarker in a race where the pace is set up front, so he needs the leader to tire. Blinkers come off him for the first time, and he has the heavy-track start on his card. Protect your money in Race 4, where Hard Shell is the leg of the Big 3 and the price is short. Race 3 is the value play with Olufsen, who has the strongest heavy record of the trio and a jockey and trainer pairing that should be in the frame.
The quaddie is the big bet of the day. Race 4 is the tight leg with two runners, and Race 5 and Race 6 are where the money gets wide. Take the quaddie as a fun ticket with a real chance of a big return, but don't put the rent on it.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
These are the three bets the day leans on.
1 - Hard Shell (Race 4, No.3) — $1.90
Why Blinkers go on first time and he's been away 113 days, but the market has made him the strongest chance in the race, with a 1st-up record of 2:0-0-0 and a time-fastest sectional on the card. Short, but the job here is to get the win.
2 - Platinum Card (Race 1, No.3) — $4.00
Why Blinkers come off for the first time and he's the strongest-value runner in a race with a genuine pace up front, so the backmarker angle works. He's won 0 from 2 starts, so this is about the price and the track conditions, not the record.
3 - Olufsen (Race 3, No.1) — $3.80
Why Ten kilos up in weight and a 3rd at Tamworth last start, with a heavy-track record of 2:0-0-1. Jordie Thompson's Northern Boogie sits behind him in the map, and the moderate pace suits a horse who can sit midfield and run on.
Multi (all three to win): $10 × 28.88 = $288.80
Race 1 – Wallace Constructions Mdn Hcp
Race type: Maiden, 1100m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace. Be Thy Name (No.2) is the LEADER on the map. Fort Laramie (No.6) is ON-PACE. Platinum Card (No.3) and Veloce Vixen (No.5) are BACKMARKERS. Ever Evolving (No.1) and Havachatharry (No.4) carry no map position, so I'm not putting them anywhere.
Punty read: Platinum Card is the bet, and the reason is the setup. He's a backmarker in a genuine pace race where the leader is going to go hard, and Blinkers come off for the first time. He's a heavy-track runner with one start on the going, no placings but a sharp last-start 7th at Tamworth. Juliet Partridge has the ride. Fort Laramie is the danger on the speed, Be Thy Name sets the race, and Havachatharry gets blinkers on for the first time, which is a question mark. Ever Evolving has been off 316 days, so the market is right to be cautious.
Top 3 + Roughie ($12.00 pool)
1. Platinum Card (No.3) — $4.00 / $1.95
Bet $12.00 Win, return $48.00
Prob 27.5% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.10x Steady since tip
Why Backmarker with Blinkers off first time, in a genuine pace race where the leader will be run down if the pace holds. Place value is there too.
2. Havachatharry (No.4) — $2.75 / $1.57
Bet Tracked
Prob 23.6% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.65x Steady since tip
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Ever Evolving (No.1) — $4.00 / $1.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.1% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.76x Steady since tip
Why 316 days off and a lone 7th at Scone last preparation. Fine horse on paper, but the layoff is the problem.
Roughie: Fort Laramie (No.6) — $9.00 / $3.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.7% | Place: 24.1% | Value: 0.78x Steady since tip
Why On-pace in a genuine pace race, with Equicast off for the first time. He's won on the good track but yet to win on heavy, so it's a question mark, but a 2nd at Walcha and a 4th at Armidale give him the sort of form that wins a race like this if the leader cooks.
Race 2 – Family Of League (Bm50)
Race type: Benchmark 50, 1100m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace. Tomoe Gozen (No.1), Hippeastrum (No.3), Tread The Boards (No.4) and Tigella (No.6) are ON-PACE. It's A Written (No.5) and Helen's Crown (No.7) are MIDFIELD. Desert Cougar (No.2) is a BACKMARKER. Tigella is the pace-disadvantaged runner on the map.
Punty read: Desert Cougar is the bet. He's a backmarker in a moderate pace, and that sounds like the wrong way round, but the heavy track record of 2:0-0-0 wins and his 2-from-4 mark on the track suggests he handles this surface. Blinkers go on again, and the Nose roll comes off for the first time. He's firming in the market from $5.50 to $4.80. Jasmine Urquhart-Warren rides him. Tigella is the danger, though the pace disadvantage flag makes me nervous. Hippeastrum has been backed from $7.00 to $5.50, so watch him.
Top 3 + Roughie ($8.80 pool)
1. Desert Cougar (No.2) — $4.80 / $2.25
Bet $8.80 Win, return $42.24
Prob 22.5% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.08x ▲4% since tip
Why Two wins from four on the track and the market is backing him in. Backmarker in a moderate pace can still get a run if the front runners come back to him.
2. Tigella (No.6) — $4.20 / $2.05
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.9% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 0.79x Steady since tip
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Tomoe Gozen (No.1) — $4.80 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.0% | Place: 37.6% | Value: 0.82x Steady since tip
Why Eight kilos up in weight and two runs wide on last outings. The win record is fine on the heavy but the last-start excuses are against her.
Roughie: Tread The Boards (No.4) — $11.00 / $3.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.2% | Place: 17.8% | Value: 0.68x Steady since tip
Why On-pace in a moderate tempo with a good-track record of 7 starts, 1 win, 1 second and 1 third. Four kilos up in weight and the market is generous, so it's a cheap pick for the roughie box.
Race 3 – The Galloping Greens 1976 Premiers (Bm50)
Race type: Benchmark 50, 1100m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace. Wolfcraig (No.2), Age Of Aquarius (No.5) and Carbrook (No.7) are ON-PACE. Olufsen (No.1), Southampton Nicco (No.4) and City Gold Speed (No.6) are MIDFIELD. Northern Boogie (No.3) is a BACKMARKER. Wolfcraig carries the pace disadvantage flag.
Punty read: Olufsen is the bet. He's a midfield runner in a moderate pace, with a jockey who knows the track, and his form is the strongest of the three top picks. He's won once at 1000m and 1200m-plus on his card, and the heavy record is 2:0-0-1. The concern is the 10-kilo jump in weight, which is a real worry. City Gold Speed and Age Of Aquarius are the danger, both on the map with solid heavy form. Wolfcraig carries the pace disadvantage, so he's the one I'd avoid.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.44 pool)
1. Olufsen (No.1) — $3.90 / $1.95
Bet $10.44 Win, return $40.72
Prob 25.6% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.00x ▼3% since tip
Why Midfield in a moderate pace with a jockey who rides the track well, and a 3rd at Tamworth last start. Ten kilos up is the worry, but the place value is there.
2. City Gold Speed (No.6) — $3.40 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.3% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.72x Steady since tip
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Age Of Aquarius (No.5) — $4.00 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.83x Steady since tip
Why On-pace with a 2-from-16 mark on good tracks, and a 3rd at Scone last start. Heavy is a question but the placings are there.
Roughie: Northern Boogie (No.3) — $9.00 / $3.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.7% | Place: 24.1% | Value: 0.78x Steady since tip
Why Backmarker in a moderate pace, with a heavy record of 6 starts, 1 win and 2 seconds. Eight kilos up, but the sectionals are strong, so if the leaders run out of petrol he could finish.
Race 4 – John Fryer Carpet Cleaning Peter McLeish Memorial Mdn Plate
Race type: Maiden, 1300m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace. Siva Tau (No.6) and Fiery Bee (No.7) are ON-PACE. Diamond Storm (No.1), Hard Shell (No.3) and Mount Ogilvie (No.4) are MIDFIELD. Gosling (No.2) and Our Bully (No.5) are BACKMARKERS.
Punty read: Hard Shell is the bet. He's a midfield runner in a slow pace, which suits a horse who can quicken from behind. Blinkers go on for the first time, and his time-fastest sectional is the reason he's the favourite. The short price is the issue, and it leaves no room for error. Ben Looker has the ride. Siva Tau is the danger, on the speed in a slow pace, and his blinkers come off first time. Fiery Bee is the one I'd watch, with Zac Wadick riding and a decent sectional.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Hard Shell (No.3) — $1.90 / $1.25
Bet $15.00 Win, return $28.50
Prob 41.2% | Place: 61.5% | Value: 0.78x Steady since tip
Why Midfield in a slow pace with a fast sectional. Blinkers on first time and 113 days off, but the market has him as the stand-out.
2. Siva Tau (No.6) — $3.60 / $1.82
Bet Tracked
Prob 23.3% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.84x Steady since tip
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Fiery Bee (No.7) — $6.50 / $2.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.5% | Place: 29.3% | Value: 0.75x Steady since tip
Why On-pace, with a 4th at Tamworth last start and a combo strike rate with Zac Wadick that's worth a look.
Roughie: Mount Ogilvie (No.4) — $10.00 / $3.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.2% | Place: 26.4% | Value: 1.02x Steady since tip
Why Map has him midfield, but his early-speed rating is the quickest in the field, so if the pace is slow he could go to the front. Two heavy starts with no wins, so it's a stretch, but a 3rd at Narrandera last preparation shows some grit.
Race 5 – Barbarians Rugby Union Club (Bm50)
Race type: Benchmark 50, 1300m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace. Doyle (No.2) is given the pace advantage. Bianco Nero (No.3) and Sharpen The Knives (No.6) are ON-PACE. Bit Of A Step (No.4), Shifa (No.8), and Master Of Rewards (No.9) are MIDFIELD. Evocator (No.1), Our Silver Linings (No.5) and Rivoli Star (No.7) are BACKMARKERS.
Punty read: Sharpen The Knives is the bet. He's on-pace in a slow pace, which is the right place to be, and the market has backed him in from $6.00 to $4.60. Tongue tie and bar plates are the gear changes, and the record on the track is the best on the card for a horse with his profile. Cassey Williams rides. Bianco Nero is the danger, on the speed with a heavy-track win on his card. Doyle has the pace advantage, and he's the one the map likes most, so he's the one to watch.
Top 3 + Roughie ($9.00 pool)
1. Sharpen The Knives (No.6) — $5.00 / $1.75
Bet $9.00 Each Way ($4.50W + $4.50P), collects $30.38 if it wins ($22.50 win + $7.88 place), $7.88 if it only places
Prob 22.1% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 1.10x ▲4% since tip
Why On-pace in a slow pace, with the market backing him in and a track record of one win and a second on the card. Each-way covers the place if he runs well without winning.
2. Bianco Nero (No.3) — $4.60 / $1.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.91x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Rivoli Star (No.7) — $5.50 / $1.95
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.3% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.79x Steady since tip
Why Backmarker with the fastest 600m sectional on the card, but the winkers come off and visors go on again. A bumped run last start is the excuse.
Roughie: Bit Of A Step (No.4) — $9.50 / $2.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.3% | Place: 28.7% | Value: 0.88x ▲5% since tip
Why Midfield in a slow pace, with tongue tie off again and the market drifting in from $13.00 to $9.50. A 7th at Moree last start was a race wide, so he's worth a crack if the front runners stay home.
Race 6 – Armidale Rugby League Old Boys (Bm58)
Race type: Benchmark 58, 1900m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace. Nature Boy (No.7) is the LEADER on the map and is pace-disadvantaged. Zou Big Boy (No.1) and Fabs Cuz (No.4) are ON-PACE. Dipierdomenico (No.2), More Cash (No.3), Big Short (No.6), Famahan (No.8) are BACKMARKERS. The Comanche (No.5) is MIDFIELD. Big Short carries the pace advantage.
Punty read: Famahan is the bet. He's a backmarker in a genuine pace race where the leader carries a pace disadvantage, which tells you the map expects the front to wear out. Famahan has been running at Tamworth, with a 4th last start after a 3rd and a 2nd, and a Good record of 12 starts with 2 seconds and 3 thirds. Juliet Partridge rides him. The market has eased from $3.00 to $4.00, which is a cooling sign. Big Short carries the pace advantage and is the danger, but he's a backmarker with a warning on his weight record. More Cash has been backed from $6.50 to $4.60, so he's the one to watch.
Top 3 + Roughie ($7.50 pool)
1. Famahan (No.8) — $4.40 / $1.60
Bet $7.50 Win, return $33.00
Prob 22.4% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.99x Steady since tip
Why Backmarker in a genuine pace race with the leader on a pace disadvantage flag. Three straight Tamworth runs at 1600m show he's running well at this trip, though the market has cooled.
2. More Cash (No.3) — $4.60 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.5% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.85x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.65 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Fabs Cuz (No.4) — $5.50 / $1.82
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.7% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.70x ▼9% since tip
Why On-pace in a genuine pace race with a 2nd at Armidale 1900m over the trip last preparation. The market has him at $5.50 and the place price is thin.
Roughie: Nature Boy (No.7) — $16.00 / $3.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.0% | Place: 24.1% | Value: 0.96x Steady since tip
Why He's the leader, and the map says the genuine pace works against him, so he needs the field to sit off him. Track record of 3 wins from 22 starts is solid, and he's been a bolter before on this track.
SEQUENCE LANES
QUADDIE (R3–R6)
Smart: 5,1,6 / 3,6,7 / 3,6,7,4 / 8,3,4,7 (144 combos x $0.3472 = $50.00) -- 34.7% flexi
Punty's take: Race 4 is the tight leg with Hard Shell and Siva Tau, while Race 5 and Race 6 are wide open, so the ticket lives or dies on the back half. The flexi is 36.5%, above the 30% floor, but short-priced winners rarely pay and this is a high-risk ticket. Entertainment value is high, but do not expect a quaddie to be the money-maker here.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - Blinkers off for the first time
Platinum Card (No.3) has Blinkers: OFF (first time) in Race 1, a heavy-track start with a 7th at Tamworth last time out. Watch the market, because the gear change is the key to the race.
2 - First time in blinkers, 113 days off
Hard Shell (No.3) has Blinkers: ON (first time) in Race 4. He's 113 days off with 0 wins from 8 career starts, so the gear change is the thing to check before the bell.
3 - Armidale's Nature Boy is still the bolter
Nature Boy (No.7) is 16 wins from 149 starts, with 3 wins from 22 on the track. The map says he's pace-disadvantaged in his own race, so he's the old warhorse who can still bite if the others don't go hard enough.
FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY
Heavy 10 at Armidale is a clean-up job for the stayers and a bloodbath for anyone who fancies a short price, so back your reads and leave the rent money at home. Good luck to the Loose Units, and may the favourites finally do the decent thing.
