Rightio Degenerates, nine races, one Good 4 track and a sky full of showers that can't decide whether to commit. Flemington's rail is on the True Entire Circuit, the card runs 1000m to 2500m, and the early speed is thin on the ground, so the sprints will make or break the pool. Grab a coffee, park yourself at the table, and let's work out who's going to lead, who's going to get stuck behind a wall of horses, and where the money's been heading.

MEET SNAPSHOT

Track: Flemington, 1000m to 2500m card
Rail: True Entire Circuit
Official going: Good 4 (rainfall nil)
Weather: Showers, live gusts 53.7km/h
Early lane guess: unknown pre-race, watch the first two
Tempo profile: Race 1 is the only race with a genuine pace on paper, with Unflinching (No.7) the lone LEADER. Races 2 to 4, 6, 8 and 9 are all moderate-pace affairs where the sit-and-wait crowd can get involved. Race 7 is a slow-pace staying test, and Race 5 has two leaders in Mazu (No.1) and Jigsaw (No.2) setting it up.
Jockeys to follow:
Craig Williams: Seven rides today, including Bred 'em All (No.11) in Race 1, Buggsy (No.2) in Race 2, Joely (No.11) in Race 3 and Aethelwulf (No.12) in Race 7, the last one a pick of mine.
Blake Shinn: Seven rides today, with Spywire (No.1) in Race 1, True Rebel (No.2) in Race 3 and Enxuto (No.10) in Race 6 all backing up his name.
James Mc Donald: Seven rides, including Chayan (No.1) in Race 4, Extragalactic (No.8) in Race 5 and Buckaroo (No.6) in Race 6. He gets the rides that matter most in the staying and middle-trip spots.
Stables to respect:
C Maher (16 runners): Sixteen runners is a stable doing its own thing. Spywire (No.1) in Race 1 carries the T-HOT 16.0% L100 tag, and the team is spread across the card including Angels Fury (No.3) in Race 4.
C J Waller (8 runners): Eight runners spread across Races 6, 7, 8 and 9. Buckaroo (No.6) and Sun God (No.3) in Race 6 are their main chances there.
R D Griffiths (5 runners): Five runners, with Enxuto (No.10) in Race 6 the one to watch at a price of $21.00.

Punty's take: Race 1 is where the speed lives, and Unflinching (No.7) is going to be the one everyone looks at first because he's the only LEADER in the field. Behind him, the ON-PACE group is crowded with Ice Kool (No.4), Spywire (No.1), Way To The Stars (No.2), Mcgaw (No.6), Stokke (No.5) and Bred 'em All (No.11), so the sprint is going to be fought out just behind the front. Race 5 has two leaders, Mazu (No.1) and Jigsaw (No.2), which is the sort of thing that either pins both of them up the track or lets one of them slip away. That's a fun one to watch.

The moderate-pace races are where people get themselves into trouble. Race 2 has Valaroso (No.5) sitting on pace and Half Pipe (No.6) as a BACKMARKER, so the front runners have to hold their nerve. Race 7 is slow, and a slow pace in a 2500m handicap is basically a lottery for the backmarkers and a headache for the leaders. Race 4 is the one I'd call a clear-favourite race, with Chayan (No.1) and Angels Fury (No.3) the two that stand out on the card.

What it means for you: Race 1 is where I'm putting my money because Ice Kool (No.4) is the cleanest shape in the race, and I'd back that with conviction. Race 2, Race 3 and Race 4 each have a clear staked pick, and I'm not pretending the others are bankers. Race 5 is the Each Way race, Jigsaw (No.2) with the place hedge, and that's the protection I want on a field with two leaders. Races 7, 8 and 9 are the chaos rooms, so I'm keeping the stakes tight there and letting the sequences do the heavy lifting. Don't chase the long roughies with big money, because the maths on those has been ugly.

PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI

These are the three bets the day leans on.

1 - Jigsaw (Race 5, No.2) — $3.15
Why The two leaders in Race 5 mean the speed will be fought over, but Jigsaw has the form to sit on the pace and finish strong. He's won three of his last three, with the last one a Caulfield 1100m win.

2 - Ice Kool (Race 1, No.4) — $2.42
Why Barrier 8, ON-PACE, 5 wins from 8 starts and a Warwick Farm 1000m win last start. The shape of Race 1 suits him and the price is short, but he's the most likely winner on the card.

3 - Chayan (Race 4, No.1) — $3.55
Why Chayan is the best-credentialed runner in the 1200m field, with a cross-over nose band going on first time and James Mc Donald aboard. He's won at this distance and the market has come in hard on him.

Multi (all three to win): $10 × 27.06 = $270.60

Race 1 – Manhari Imperatriz Sprint

Race type: Open, 1000m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace. Unflinching (No.7) is the only LEADER. Ice Kool (No.4), Spywire (No.1), Way To The Stars (No.2), Stokke (No.5), Mcgaw (No.6) and Bred 'em All (No.11) are ON-PACE. Point And Shoot (No.3), Philosopher (No.8), Perilous Fighter (No.9) and Always Enuff (No.10) are MIDFIELD.
Punty read: Ice Kool (No.4) is the bet and I'm happy to put the money on him. He's from barrier 8, rated ON-PACE, and has 5 wins from 8 starts, including 4 from 4 at sprint distances. He won at Warwick Farm over 1000m last start and the market has firmed him from $2.42 into $2.42. The danger is Bred 'em All (No.11), who drifted from $6.00 out to $6.00 and is a strong profile, with 2 wins from 2 first-up and 2 wins from 2 on good. Spywire (No.1) has HEAVY support into $6.40 and Blake Shinn, but he was 6th at Caulfield over 1100m both recent starts. Way To The Stars (No.2) has an ear muffs change off today and is an overlay on the numbers, but the market hasn't been kind.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Ice Kool (No.4) — $2.42 / $1.22
Bet $15.00 Win, return $36.30
Prob 34.1% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.83x ▲2% since tip
Why Clear ON-PACE shape from barrier 8, 5 wins from 8 starts, sprint specialist, and the market is backing him in.
2. Bred 'em All (No.11) — $6.00 / $1.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.0% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.26x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.85 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Spywire (No.1) — $6.40 / $1.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.3% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.85x Steady since tip
Why Barrier 1 with Blake Shinn and HEAVY support. Two recent 6th placings at Caulfield leave him short of the bet.

Roughie: Way To The Stars (No.2) — $18.50 / $3.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.3% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 1.17x Steady since tip
Why Ear muffs off again, and a Randwick 1000m 11th last start where he was bumped and hampered. If the leader gets run down, he can find the front in a sprint like this.

Race 2 – HKJC World Pool Red Anchor Stakes

Race type: Open, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace. Buggsy (No.2), The Speed Machine (No.3), Valaroso (No.5), Inner Gold (No.7) are ON-PACE. Half Pipe (No.6) is a BACKMARKER. Peyton (No.8), Turbo Saint (No.9), Regal Harry (No.10) are MIDFIELD.
Punty read: Valaroso (No.5) is the staked runner, and he's the type I like with a little conviction. He's ON-PACE from barrier 3, won his last start at Seymour over 1200m and has the sectional speed in the closing stages. Logan Bates rides him. The market has been crushing him from $3.70 to $3.70, and that's HEAVY money coming in. Half Pipe (No.6) is the danger, a BACKMARKER who has been racing with a bump and a bit of bad luck. Buggsy (No.2) has blinkers and a tongue tie going on for the first time, and that gear change is worth watching.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Valaroso (No.5) — $3.70 / $1.45
Bet $15.00 Win, return $55.50
Prob 26.8% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.99x ▼11% since tip
Why Won at Seymour last start, ON-PACE from barrier 3, and the market has put money on him hard.

Why A real chance — but at $1.75 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Buggsy (No.2) — $5.60 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.2% | Place: 47.3% | Value: 0.96x ▼33% since tip
Why Blinkers and tongue tie both going on first time, and Craig Williams is aboard. The gear is the question.

Roughie: Turbo Saint (No.9) — $17.50 / $3.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.8% | Place: 27.8% | Value: 1.02x ▼20% since tip
Why Trainer C W McDonald runs a horse that was a 1st-up winner and runs well on good. If the front pair go hard, the closer might collect.

Race 3 – Drummond Golf Vase

Race type: Open, 2040m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace. Lepolo (No.1), True Rebel (No.2), Hierarchy (No.3), King Winston (No.8), Bohemian Boy (No.9), Salann (No.10), Joely (No.11) are all BACKMARKER. Skua (No.4), Winter Arc (No.6), Gilgeous (No.7) are ON-PACE. Written Empire (No.5) is MIDFIELD.
Punty read: True Rebel (No.2) is the staked runner, and he's the one I want on the bet slip. He's a BACKMARKER from barrier 3, has finished 2nd and 1st in his two most recent Caulfield and Geelong runs, and Blake Shinn gets him home in the 2040m. He's the favourite at $2.80 and the market hasn't moved on him. The danger is Written Empire (No.5), HEAVY out from $16.00 to $8.20 with James Mc Donald. The other one worth a sniff is Salann (No.10), drifting from $7.20 out to $7.20 with a BACKMARKER tag, which is a red flag for me.

Top 3 + Roughie ($7.50 pool)

1. True Rebel (No.2) — $2.80 / $1.22
Bet $7.50 Win, return $21.00
Prob 27.2% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.76x ▼2% since tip
Why A closer that runs from the back, and his last two runs at Caulfield and Geelong show he's sharp and fit.
2. Salann (No.10) — $7.20 / $2.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.28x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $2.10 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Joely (No.11) — $5.70 / $1.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.6% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.95x ▼4% since tip
Why Craig Williams aboard, an Echuca 1400m win on the way in, and a tough one to beat if the pace is slow.

Roughie: Hierarchy (No.3) — $9.00 / $2.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.9% | Place: 33.8% | Value: 0.81x ▼6% since tip
Why Ear muffs on for the first time and a 2kg drop in weight. If the leaders stop and the backmarkers come on, he's the one who could run home.

Race 4 – Symal Crockett Stakes

Race type: Open, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace. Ladhar (No.8) and Caddington (No.9) are advantaged. Chayan (No.1) is BACKMARKER. Angels Fury (No.3), Lady Catalina (No.6), Superbec (No.7), Aroused (No.11) are ON-PACE. Ladhar (No.8), Caddington (No.9), Avery Anna (No.12), Nishioka (No.13) are MIDFIELD.
Punty read: Chayan (No.1) is the bet. He's a BACKMARKER from barrier 4 with James Mc Donald aboard and a cross-over nose band going on first time. His last start at Caulfield was an interference-affected 6th, so the bounce-back is in the line. He's 2kg up on his last start, which is the only knock on the weights. Angels Fury (No.3) is the danger, ON-PACE from barrier 1 with Ethan Brown and two wins from three starts, although he is also 2kg up on last start. Caddington (No.9) is the roughie who could pick up the pieces if the front pair get caught.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Chayan (No.1) — $3.55 / $1.50
Bet $15.00 Win, return $53.25
Prob 29.7% | Place: 61.5% | Value: 1.05x ▲3% since tip
Why Interference cost him last start, a bounce-back spot with James Mc Donald on board, and the market has backed him in.
2. Angels Fury (No.3) — $4.00 / $1.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 28.5% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.14x ▼8% since tip

3. Aroused (No.11) — $4.50 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.6% | Place: 52.2% | Value: 0.61x ▲3% since tip
Why ON-PACE from barrier 11 with a Ballarat 1000m win last start, but a 1-from-1 record is thin for a 1200m field.

Roughie: Caddington (No.9) — $9.40 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.11x ▲15% since tip
Why Billy Egan rides a MIDFIELD horse that has shown sectional speed at this trip, and he's the one who can fly if the sprint gets lively.

Race 5 – Cirka McEwen Stakes

Race type: Open, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace. Mazu (No.1) and Jigsaw (No.2) are LEADERS. Extragalactic (No.8) is MIDFIELD. Rey Magnerio (No.3) is MIDFIELD. Smooth Chino (No.5) and Arkansaw Kid (No.4) are ON-PACE. La Fracas (No.6) and Splash Back (No.7) are BACKMARKER.
Punty read: Jigsaw (No.2) is the Each Way pick, and I'm backing him to do the job. He's a LEADER from barrier 4 with Logan Bates, and has won three of his last three, including a Caulfield 1100m win last start. The two-leader set-up is the problem, but he's a horse that gets off the pace when he needs to. The danger is Extragalactic (No.8), a MIDFIELD runner who is advantaged by the pace and has finished 2nd and 4th in his last two. Smooth Chino (No.5) has a J-HOT tag with Austin Galati aboard.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Jigsaw (No.2) — $3.15 / $1.20
Bet $15.00 Each Way ($7.50W + $7.50P), collects $32.63 if it wins ($23.63 win + $9.00 place), $9.00 if it only places
Prob 34.8% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.10x ▼7% since tip
Why Three straight wins in the extended form, LEADER from barrier 4, and the Each Way covers him if the pace gets messy.
2. Extragalactic (No.8) — $2.94 / $1.22
Bet Tracked
Prob 27.6% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.81x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Smooth Chino (No.5) — $7.80 / $2.05
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.84x ▲7% since tip

Bet Tracked
Prob 10.7% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.00x ▲12% since tip
Why Visors off and winkers on for the first time, with Track 7:2-2-2 and Good 24:9-3-6 on the record. A solid placegetter who could run into a place at a big price.

Race 6 – Kia Ora Stud Mile

Race type: Open, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace. Sun God (No.3) is advantaged. Astral Flame (No.14) is disadvantaged. Surfin' Bird (No.12) and Another Wil (No.7) are ON-PACE. Buckaroo (No.6), Zakouma (No.5), Feroce (No.8), On Display (No.13) are MIDFIELD. Von Hauke (No.1) and Enxuto (No.10) are BACKMARKER.
Punty read: Surfin' Bird (No.12) is the bet and the one I'm most confident in on the card. He's ON-PACE from barrier 6 with Jordan Childs, 6 wins from 11 starts and 4 wins from 7 on good. Caulfield 1600m was a win last start and the market has firmed him from $3.05 to $3.05. The danger is Buckaroo (No.6), HEAVY from $5.90 down to $5.90 with James Mc Donald aboard. Enxuto (No.10) is the one at $21.00 who has been running home from the back, and I'd rather watch him than back him.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

Prob 10.2% | Place: 33.9% | Value: 0.96x ▼6% since tip
Why ON-PACE from barrier 8 with John Allen. Track 4:2-0-1 and a T-HOT trainer tag make him the roughie that can sit on the speed.

Race 7 – Ladbrokes Moonee Valley Gold Cup

Race type: Open, 2500m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace. Juja Kibo (No.2) and Future History (No.8) are ON-PACE. Aethelwulf (No.12) is MIDFIELD. Pinhole (No.3), Torranzino (No.4), Valiant King (No.5), Kings Valley (No.9), King Pedro (No.11), Autumn Mystery (No.13), Manzor Blue (No.14), Strictly Business (No.16), Jennivamoose (No.20) are BACKMARKER. Kizlyar (No.18) has UNKNOWN map.
Punty read: Aethelwulf (No.12) is the bet. He's from barrier 15 with Craig Williams, and the recent form is the best on the card: Randwick 2400m 2nd, Newcastle 2300m 1st and Rosehill 2000m 1st. He's a MIDFIELD horse that can sit in the tracking group and pick off the leaders. The danger is Pinhole (No.3), a BACKMARKER from barrier 7 who won at Caulfield 2400m last start. Juja Kibo (No.2) is the front runner who has to be watched. Mr Monaco (No.7) is the roughie with a Flemington 2520m win last start.

Race 8 – Ladbrokes Cox Plate

Race type: Open, 2040m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace. Sir Delius (No.3) and Saint George (No.9) are advantaged. Light Infantry Man (No.2) is disadvantaged. Sir Delius (No.3), Light Infantry Man (No.2), Blind Raise (No.12) are ON-PACE. Aeliana (No.10), Cosmic Crusader (No.5), Warwoven (No.11), Birdman (No.6) are MIDFIELD. Ceolwulf (No.1) is BACKMARKER.
Punty read: Sir Delius (No.3) is the bet. He's ON-PACE from barrier 5 with Craig Williams, has 7 wins from 15 starts and a 4th last start at Flemington 2000m. The market has eased from $5.40 out to $5.40 and I'm happy to take the bigger price, because the others have to beat him. Cosmic Crusader (No.5) is the danger, a MIDFIELD horse with 11 wins from 23 and a Flemington 2000m win last start, with the T-HOT trainer tag. Aeliana (No.10) is a MIDFIELD horse running home off 3rd at Flemington 2000m. Birdman (No.6) is the roughie with a Caulfield 1800m win on the record.

Race 9 – Powerflo Solutions Tesio Stakes

Race type: Open, 2040m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace. After Summer (No.5) is advantaged. Sunset Park (No.4) is disadvantaged. Perfect Ten (No.9), Sunset Park (No.4), After Summer (No.5) are ON-PACE. Soverato (No.13), Classic Gem (No.14), Jenni's Meadow (No.8), Sun Gift (No.11), Soverato (No.13), Soverato are MIDFIELD. Punty read: Soverato (No.13) is the bet, and he's the one I'd put the money on. Damian Lane rides a MIDFIELD horse that has a 3rd at Randwick 1600m last start, and the sectional speed in his data shows he's a fast finisher. The market has HEAVY support out from $5.70 to $5.70. The danger is Shockletz (No.3), a BACKMARKER from barrier 6 with Blinkers going on again and HEAVY support from $6.50 to $6.50. Too Darn Discreet (No.1) is the one with the most Good form in the field and the market is firming him in. Classic Gem (No.14) is the roughie with the bump last start at Flemington 2000m.

Why Track 8:3-1-0 and Dist 3:3-0-0 on his record, with a firming market. Declan Bates is aboard.

Why Firming from $11.00 into $9.60, William Pike aboard, and a MIDFIELD trip. A bump at Flemington last start means he's a bounce-back chance.

SEQUENCE LANES

EARLY QUADDIE (R2–R5)

Smart: 5,6,2,8 / 2,10,11 / 3,1 / 2,8 (48 combos x $0.4167 = $20.00) -- 41.7% flexi
Punty's take: Race 4 and Race 5 are the tight legs, with Chayan and Jigsaw keeping the ticket shape honest. Races 2 and 3 are wide open with the pace questions still live. This is a low-outlay, moderate-risk ticket, and the payout only really moves if one of the longer runners lands.

QUADDIE (R6–R9)

Smart: 12,6,7 / 12,2,3,7 / 3,10,5,6 / 3,13,1,14 (192 combos x $0.33854 = $65.00) -- 33.9% flexi
Punty's take: Race 6 is tight around Surfin' Bird, but Races 7, 8 and 9 are all chaos. The overall risk is high and the flexi is the main thing to watch. A quaddie needs a $5 to $10 winner somewhere to pay well, and this one needs a bit of luck on at least one of the open legs.

BIG 6 (R4–R9)

Smart: 3,1,11,9 / 2,8,5,3 / 12,6,7,10 / 12,2,3,7 / 3,10,5,6 / 3,13,1,14 (4096 combos x $0.00122 = $5.00) -- 0.12% flexi
Punty's take: This is an entertainment-only ticket. Four thousand and ninety-six combos at a 0.12% flexi is a long shot and nothing more, so don't expect it to pay. It's a fun way to watch the final six races if you want the thrill.

NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK

1 - Blinkers on first time for Buggsy
Buggsy (No.2) goes into Race 2 with blinkers and a tongue tie both on for the first time. Craig Williams is aboard, so watch the market on him early.

2 - Chayan's bounce-back spot
Chayan (No.1) has a Caulfield 1200m 6th last start that came with interference, and a cross-over nose band on for the first time. That's a horse with a legitimate excuse and a gear change in the same line.

3 - Bohemian Boy's gear change parade
Bohemian Boy (No.9) in Race 3 has three things going on at $201.00: cross-over nose band, tongue tie and a J-HOT jockey tag. It's the racing equivalent of a stacked pizza with no sauce, so tread carefully.

FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY

Get your bets in early, don't chase the roughies with the house money, and keep your eyes on the first two in every sprint. Ice Kool is the one I'd bet the rent on, but Flemington's in no mood to hand out freebies today.
