Punty's Punts
Race type: Maiden, 1600m
Map & tempo: Slow pace on the map, and nobody is pushing to lead. Kalamia King from barrier 2 is the most likely to be given the front, and Bacetti and Elemiss are caught out wide from barrier 7 and barrier 6. That's a shape that hands the sit to the forward horses and makes life hard for the backmarkers. Seaticflash sits back from barrier 5 and the shape goes against him, so he needs to find a gap late.
Punty read: Seaticflash is the bet and I'm happy to put the money on him. He's been backed in from $4.57 to $2.50 and Corey Sutherland is riding him, with a hot trainer strike rate at the moment. He's been hitting the board on the soft ground in both of his efforts, and a place at $1.45 is the cushion if the finish gets messy. Poor Ol' Johny Ray is the one to watch at $3.45, because he's got a stack of gear changes including the winkers and tongue tie on for the first time, and his last start was a fifth at the Gold Coast. Kalamia King is the wildcard at $29.00 with visors off again and some bad luck in recent starts, though he hasn't won on soft yet.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Seaticflash (No.7) — $2.50 / $1.45 🏆 3RD
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 33.6% | Place: 55.8% | Value: 0.84x
Why Corey Sutherland is riding him and the market has been hammering him from $4.57. He's a backmarker in a maiden with the shape working against him, but his last two runs both finished in the first few, so he's got the class to make up the ground.
2. Poor Ol' Johny Ray (No.2) — $3.45 / $1.60 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 27.7% | Place: 48.4% | Value: 0.96x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Enuff Torque (No.3) — $4.60 / $1.75 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.0% | Place: 45.8% | Value: 0.92x
Why A backmarker from barrier 1 who got held up in his last two starts, so the excuses are there. The trainer is running hot at the moment and the horse has a place on Good ground, but the soft track is a bit of a question.
Roughie: Kalamia King (No.1) — $31.00 / $5.50 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 1.9% | Place: 5.8% | Value: 0.58x
Why He's got a visors off again and a run of excuses across his last four starts, including interference and getting bumped. If the pace collapses and he gets the front from barrier 2, he's the one who can steal this, but I wouldn't bet on it.
Race type: Restricted 58, 1800m
Map & tempo: Slow pace again, and No More Romance is the likeliest to find the front from barrier 4 while Don Stefano and Ormond Road are both drawn wide. The shape suits the back half, so the backmarkers who can get across the field are in with a chance. Fifty Calibre sits back from barrier 2 and the shape helps him, so the trip into the straight is the one he wants.
Punty read: Fifty Calibre is the each-way bet, and I like the way the shape sets up for him. He's a backmarker who gets the right sort of run at this distance, and the trainer is hot at the moment. He's been in the finish in his last few starts and the excuses are all about running wide and getting held up. Poutchek is a midfield horse who stays about the same price for the place, and Mosamour is backing up but I'm not putting money on him. Keep an eye on Mosamour, because the trainer is running hot and the horse is a backmarker who can finish in a hurry on the right day.
Top 3 + Roughie ($7.50 pool)
1. Fifty Calibre (No.1) — $3.80 / $1.57 🏆 4TH
Bet $7.50 Each Way ($3.75W + $3.75P) — ✗ Lost, net -$7.50
Prob 25.7% | Place: 58.0% | Value: 0.98x
Why A backmarker who has been held up and had interference in his last few starts, so the stalk from barrier 2 is the set-up he needs. He's won at Track and at Distance in his career, and the trainer's strike rate is running hot.
2. Poutchek (No.6) — $3.60 / $1.52 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.5% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.63x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Mosamour (No.7) — $7.00 / $2.15 🏆 8TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.06x
Why He's a backmarker from barrier 10 in a Slow pace race, so the shape is against him. The trainer is running hot though, and his record at 1800m-ish distance is solid.
Roughie: A Bit Dusty (No.4) — $11.00 / $2.70 🏆 7TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.9% | Place: 32.5% | Value: 0.87x
Why Midfield from barrier 1 with a 1st-up record of 3 starts without a win, and a 3kg rise in weight from last start. If the early speed gets the race stuck up front and he finds the gap on the rail, he's got the place in him.
Race type: Maiden, 1000m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with No Wallet Reg the only leader, and the pressure comes from a whole bunch of handy runners. Cassia County from barrier 1, Varejao from barrier 3, and Emphatique from barrier 6 all sit close. Seaphira is drawn wide at barrier 11 and has to work to get across, while Cool Zumbelina and Para Park Ruby are back-half runners who need cover. The shape suits the handy horses and it's against Emphatique (map factor 0.95), so he needs the leader to come back to him.
Punty read: Emphatique is the bet, and I'm sold on the place value even though the shape is against him. He sits handy from barrier 6 and the market is holding him at $3.00. He's got a Soft record with three seconds and three thirds, and his last start was a third at Sunshine Coast 1000m, so the form is in the book. The jockey and trainer combo is one of the strongest on the card, and if No Wallet Reg gets caught by the pack, Emphatique is the one who gets the run. Cool Zumbelina is the danger at $4.60, a horse who has been hitting the board and sits midfield from barrier 12. Cassia County is the one to watch at $3.60 with the ear muffs fitted pre-race only.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Emphatique (No.6) — $3.00 / $1.40
Bet $15.00 Win
Prob 34.5% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.03x
Why The shape goes against him, but he's the best-placed horse in the field with a Soft record of three thirds and a 3rd at Sunshine Coast 1000m last start. The Sandkuhl combo is strong, and if the leader is caught on the turn, he's the one with the best finish.
2. Cool Zumbelina (No.2) — $4.60 / $1.62
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.7% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.72x
Why A real chance — but at $1.62 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Cassia County (No.5) — $3.60 / $1.52
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.4% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.55x
Why Sits handy from barrier 1 and got held up last start with a fourth at Sunshine Coast 1000m. The ear muffs are on pre-race only, which is a bit of colour rather than a reason.
Roughie: Wild Lass (No.12) — $18.00 / $3.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 3.9% | Place: 20.7% | Value: 0.70x
Why She's been second twice on the Sunshine Coast and has a Track 4:0-2-0 record with 0 wins. If the speed collapses and she gets a clean run in the straight, she's the place chance.
Race type: Benchmark 70, 1000m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with Super Daisy and King Of The Jungle contesting the lead from barriers 3 and 2. Out Of Turn sits handy from barrier 1, which is a perfect spot in a race where the front runners are fighting for it. Heart And Spirit is drawn wide at barrier 6 and has to work to cross, and Devil Devil from barrier 9 needs cover. The shape helps the handy horses, so Out Of Turn gets the best of it.
Punty read: Out Of Turn is the bet and he's the one I'd rather have than anyone else on the card. He's been the market pick, dropping from $8.33 to $2.90 and the money has come in for him. He's got a Track record of 4 wins from 6 and a Soft record of 4 wins from 7, and both his last three starts were at Sunshine Coast, with two wins over 1400m. He's been spelled 148 days, and the first-up record of 2 starts without a win is the only caution. Galactic Star at $3.15 is the danger, a midfield horse with a good sectional and a strong record on Soft. Heart And Spirit is the one to watch at $7.00, a stalker with a tremendous record at this track.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Out Of Turn (No.2) — $3.00 / $1.62
Bet $15.00 Win
Prob 32.3% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.97x
Why He's the horse with the track record and the soft record, and the shape helps the handy runners in this race. Corey Sutherland has ridden him to a 2 from 3 combo, and the trainer is running hot on Track. The 148-day spell is the question, but he's been good over this distance on both occasions.
2. Galactic Star (No.8) — $3.15 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.63x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Heart And Spirit (No.7) — $7.00 / $2.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.4% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.08x
Why A stalker from barrier 6 with four wins at Track and at Distance. He's been raced wide and blocked in his last couple of runs, and the 6kg rise in weight is the knock.
Roughie: Super Daisy (No.9) — $12.00 / $3.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.8% | Place: 22.5% | Value: 0.94x
Why He's a leader from barrier 3 who has been raced wide and had interference in recent runs. If the pace stays moderate and he gets the front, he's the horse who can steal it.
Race type: Restricted 55, 1000m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with no clear lead, and Vredefort (barrier 11), Herecomesantorini (barrier 7), The Sour (barrier 6), Planned Encounter (barrier 3), and Shelly's Ace (barrier 9) all in the mix for the front. Vredefort and Shelly's Ace are drawn wide and have to work to cross. Ralos Star and Planned Encounter benefit from the shape, and The Sour sits handy from barrier 6 with the shape against him.
Punty read: The Sour is the bet and I'm happy with it at $3.50. He's a handy horse with a trainer who's running cold but a jockey who is running steady. His first-up record is 5 starts with a 1-1 record in the placings, and the bubble cheeker on one side is a new piece of gear for him. His last start was a seventh at Sunshine Coast 1000m and the excuses are there, so he's a bit of a bounce-back chance. Ralos Star at $4.80 is the danger, a midfield horse with the shape in his favour and a fastest L600 on his last run. Kemal sits midfield from barrier 8 at $3.70 and has been hitting the board regularly on Soft ground.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. The Sour (No.10) — $3.50 / $1.57
Bet $15.00 Win
Prob 24.0% | Place: 54.4% | Value: 0.84x
Why He's the horse with the strongest win chance on the card in this race and his record on the Sunshine Coast is respectable. Jake Bayliss is a 9.2% combo rider with the horse, and the bubble cheeker is the new piece of gear. The shape goes against him from the handy spot, but he has the class to hold on.
2. Ralos Star (No.8) — $5.00 / $1.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.3% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.02x
Why A real chance — but at $1.80 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Kemal (No.12) — $3.70 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.3% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.57x
Why A midfield horse with a Soft record of 1 win and a place finish at Sunshine Coast 1000m. He's a runner for the place at the minimum.
Roughie: Wally's Boy (No.1) — $10.50 / $2.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.0% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.94x
Why He's a midfield horse from barrier 4 with a Class 1 win and a Distance record of 1 win from 6. The market has drifted from $4.48 to $10.50, so the money is leaving him, but the fastest sectional in his last run is the reason he's on the roughie list.
Race type: Class 3, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with a bunch of runners who can get the lead, including Col Burn from barrier 11, Fifth Force from barrier 7 and Global Eclipse from barrier 1. Col Burn is drawn wide, and the shape goes against him from the handy spot (map factor 0.84), but Global Eclipse benefits from the shape from barrier 1. The Bear is midfield-ish and Limero is the outside runner who needs luck.
Punty read: Col Burn is the bet, and he's the most fancied horse on the card for good reason. He's won his last start at this track and his first-up record is two wins from two. The market has backed him from $5.68 to $2.64, and the trainer is running hot on Track. He is drawn wide at barrier 11 and the shape is against him, but his class is the reason he's in the bet. Global Eclipse at $2.64 is the danger, a handy runner from barrier 1 with the shape working for him and a strong record at Sunshine Coast. Limero is the roughie, a midfield horse from barrier 5 with the shape working for him and three wins from 35 starts.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Col Burn (No.2) — $2.64 / $1.22
Bet $10.50 Win
Prob 37.3% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.98x
Why Won last start at Sunshine Coast 1400m and has two wins from two first-up starts. The market has backed him hard and the trainer is running hot at the track. He's drawn wide, but the class edge is his reason to win.
2. Global Eclipse (No.4) — $2.64 / $1.22
Bet Tracked
Prob 25.0% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.66x
Why A real chance — but at $1.22 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. The Bear (No.6) — $9.00 / $2.45
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.8% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 0.79x
Why He's been second at Ipswich 1350m and had a bad run last start with a raced-wide excuse. The trainer is running hot, and the place is the horse's best chance.
Roughie: Limero (No.5) — $12.00 / $2.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.8% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.82x
Why A midfield runner from barrier 5 with three wins and ten seconds from 35 starts, and six placings on Track. If the leader Col Burn gets caught, Limero is the one with a late run in him.
Race type: Restricted 62, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with Caishen from barrier 9, Tap High from barrier 10 and Brumal from barrier 8 all in the lead mix. Cantankerous and Elusive Domina both benefit from the shape from the midfield. Vandevelde is midfield from barrier 13 and the shape is against him (map factor 0.68), so he needs the pace to fall apart or a late run through the field.
Punty read: Vandevelde is the bet, though he's a tough one with the shape against him. He's won a Soft race and was second at Gold Coast 1800m in his last two starts. The market has drifted from $3.31 to $4.60, so the money has gone off him a touch. Jockey Corey Sutherland has a hot run lately. Elusive Domina at $4.80 is the danger, a midfield runner from barrier 1 who won at Sunshine Coast Inner last start with the shape working for him. Caishen at $6.00 is the one to watch, a handy horse who had blinkers taken off for the first time.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Vandevelde (No.5) — $4.60 / $1.85
Bet $10.50 Win
Prob 20.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.92x
Why The shape is against him, but he has a Soft record of one win and one second from five and a last-start third at Eagle Farm 1600m. The jockey is a hot rider at the moment and he's racing with a 4kg rise in weight from last start, which he has carried before.
2. Elusive Domina (No.12) — $4.80 / $1.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.0% | Place: 52.5% | Value: 0.82x
Why A real chance — but at $1.90 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Caishen (No.7) — $6.00 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.85x
Why A handy runner from barrier 9 with the blinkers off for the first time, and a second at Sunshine Coast 1600m last start. The trainer is running hot.
Roughie: Bit Of Grunt (No.1) — $9.50 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.3% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.89x
Why He's a midfield horse from barrier 7 with a record on Track of 2 wins from 18 starts, and the fastest L600 and L400 on his last start. If the pace collapses late, he's the one who can run through the middle of the field.
That's the ticket as I struck it — the legs below are exactly what ran, no rewriting history.
Smart: 2,8,7 / 10,8,12 / 2,4 / 12,7,5 (54 combos x $0.3704 = $20.00) -- 37% flexi
The day's multi leans on three win legs across the card.
1 - Seaticflash (Race 1, No.7)✗ — $2.50
2 - Emphatique (Race 3, No.6) — $3.00
3 - Col Burn (Race 6, No.2) — $2.64

Punty's Early Mail
Rightio Degenerates, Sunshine Coast is sitting on a Soft 6 with a shower forecast and a storm hanging over the place, so bring your wet weather brain and leave the fancy shoes at home. Seven races, a 1000m to 1800m card, and the speed map is more interesting than the market would have you believe. Pull up a stool, I've got the cheat sheet.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Sunshine Coast, 1000m to 1800m card
Rail: +9m Entire
Official going: Soft 6 (Nil rainfall last 24hrs, 15mm last 7 days)
Weather: Showers. Storm, 25°C, humidity 78%, wind 11km/h N. Live gusts 16.7km/h, feels like 27.5°C. Rain risk 50%+ at 10:00, 13:00, 16:00 and 19:00.
Early lane guess: unknown pre-race, watch the first two
Tempo profile: Races 1 and 2 are both Slow Pace, Race 3 is the only Genuine Pace, and Races 4 to 7 all read Moderate. Race 3 is the one with a proper lead fight on paper, with No Wallet Reg up front on its own. Everywhere else the speed is spread thin, so the horses that sit handy and the closers will both get a look in.
Jockeys to follow:
Corey Sutherland: seven rides on the day, including Seaticflash in Race 1, Col Burn in Race 6 and Vandevelde's rival Out Of Turn in Race 4. Sutherland's combo with Out Of Turn is 66.7% (2/3) at this track, and he has the most rides of anyone on the card, so he's the one to keep an eye on.
Fiona Sandkuhl: five rides, including Emphatique in Race 3 and Wondereach in Race 4. Her combo with Emphatique is 17.3% (18/104), which is the kind of repeat partnership that tells you something.
Jake Bayliss: five rides, including The Sour in Race 5 and Poutchek in Race 2. He's the rider on the one horse in Race 5 with a bubble cheeker fitted for the first time, so he'll be busy in that run.
Stables to respect:
Stuart & Bayley Kendrick (6 runners): six runners on the card, with Galactic Star and Heart And Spirit both in Race 4, so they've got depth in the one race.
Kristie Clark-Peoples (5 runners): Poor Ol' Johny Ray in Race 1, Cool Zumbelina in Race 3, and both Kemal and Planned Encounter in Race 5. Five runners and a good spread across the card.
J R Bayliss (4 runners): Ormond Road, No Wallet Reg, The Sour and Kozak Prince, so the stable has a runner in four different races.
Punty's take: Here's where the speed sits, and it's not where the tipsters would want it. Race 3 is the only race with a genuine lead fight on paper, and it's a lonely one, because No Wallet Reg is the only leader and nobody sits right on its tail. That makes it a race for the handy horses who can get a clean run behind the leader, not for the backmarkers hoping for a freak. Races 4 to 7 read moderate, which usually means the pace comes to the one who wants it and the horses sitting on the outside of the speed get to pick their spot. Race 6 is the banker race on the day, with Col Burn at $2.64 and Global Eclipse at $2.64 both holding strong form and map advantage. Race 5 and Race 7 are where the chaos lives, with both fields holding a handful of horses who could legitimately win from six or seven different spots. Race 1 looks like a bloke's race, a 1600m maiden with a fast-finishing backmarker in the mix and a shape that works against him, so if you want a pick there, you're making a call about that shape and nothing else.
What it means for you: The day is set up for you to be aggressive in the middle and a bit careful at the ends. Race 6 is the race where you get the most protection, with Col Burn holding the top spot in the Big 3 and the quaddie leaning on its tight shape. Race 5 is where you open the wallet a little, because the pick there is a horse coming off a long spell with the shape against him, and that's a risk worth taking at a price like $3.50. Race 7 is wide open with the favourite drifting, so if you want the bigger payout, that's where the roughie lives, but keep the stakes small. The quaddie is the entertainment play. It's built around the races where the shape is kind to the picks, and the flexi is decent for a bunch of tough legs, so don't get greedy with the stake.
